Quote of the day—U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez

There is absolutely no reason at all for anyone to buy an assault weapon. These high power firearms have one sole purpose — to commit mass murder.

U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez

Gun control push is back in Washington, and N.J. lawmakers are all in
[Interesting. Since there are tens of millions of these guns in circulation in the U.S. and only about 400 murders committed each year with rifles of all types we have a limited number of possible conclusions:

  1. Those tens of millions of “assault weapons” are almost all being misused for peaceful purposes.
  2. Menendez is lying.
  3. Menendez is living in an alternate universe.

I’m going with #2 with the added extrapolation that he probably has evil intentions as his motivation to pursue this legislation.—Joe]

Quote of the day—Paul Sanders

Have you ever thought about the underlying theme of gun control?

“It’s too easy to get a gun.”

Exactly what does that mean?  Simply “getting a gun” is a harmless action.  What one does after they obtain it is what matters.  Since we can’t control what someone does with a firearm after they obtain it, we simply prevent them from getting one in the first place, or so the idea goes.

There are a couple of big problems with this premise.  First of all, we have this little thing called due process.  In a free society, we simply do not deny someone their rights based on what they “might do.”  You can spin it any way you like, that is simply not how a Constitutional Republic is supposed to function.  Our founders would roll over in their graves at such a suggestion.

Secondly, if you take the “solution” to its logical conclusion, we must make it impossible for everyone to get a gun so nobody can misuse it.  There is simply no other conclusion to which you can arrive.  Preventing someone from purchasing a firearm based on suspicion of future behavior is a fool’s errand.  The only way for it to be effective is to apply it to everyone.

So, when someone says, “Nobody wants to take your guns”, what they really mean is, “We want to make it impossible to ever get one in the first place.”

Quote of the day—Josh Horwitz

AR-15 semi-automatic assault rifles have become the favorite gun of American mass shooters. These weapons were made to do one thing: kill as many people as quickly as possible. In the 14 years since the federal assault weapons ban expired, we have seen mass shootings become more frequent and far more lethal.

It is time for Congress to revisit a federal ban on semi-automatic assault rifles like the AR-15. They should also take action to regulate these weapons the same way we regulate fully automatic weapons and other class 3 weapons. Congress should also take action to regulate high capacity magazines and accessories that are designed to increase lethality. By regulating assault weapons, high capacity magazines and accessories like bump stocks, Congress can take significant action that will save American lives.

Five gun violence prevention priorities for the incoming Congress
[I find it very telling that the link to this article (thehill.com/opinion/civil-rights/421292-five-gun-violence-prevention-priorities-for-the-incoming-congress) puts it in the civil rights category. Is this a subtle acknowledgement that they know the proposals are a violation of civil rights?

One should note that, “gun violence” decreased since the “assault weapon ban” expired in 2004. And rifles of any type, AR-15s being a subset, are only rarely used in crime. But liars lie. You can’t expect them to tell the truth.

Since AR-15 type rifles are the most popular gun in the U.S. and the Heller decision makes it clear that firearms “in common use” it means such a ban would be unconstitutional. But people like Horwitz do not care about specific enumerated rights.—Joe]

The solution is quite simple.

Ban civilian firearms and make illegal possession and/or distribution a capital crime.

The answer is simple.

Ban civilian firearms and make illegal possession a capital crime.

The public execution of a few hundred thousand illegal gun owners and dealers will curtail the problem quite nicely.

I am a 2A repeal-ist total gun confiscationist, gun prohibitionist.

My end goal would be all of the fire arm factories taken down, the guns melted down, the second amendment overturned, life sentence for just having a gun, and total disarming of everyone including the military!

How ever that is clearly not going to happen so I will start with what is reasonable…

Quote of the day—Brian Keith

“And please don’t respond. I detest when men who don’t read Design Mom come here and lecture this community of incredibly smart, well-educated women.”

You want to advocate that tens of millions of Americans be made in to felons to be hunted by police, but you object to any of those people you would make into felons merely typing a reply to your advocacy of their demise?

That doesn’t sound smart, and it doesn’t sound well-educated.

How did the United States take land from the Native Americans? Part of it was by taking their guns first.

How did the Germans push the Jews in to the ghettos? Partly by taking their guns first.

How did the Turks exterminate so many Armenians? They took the Armenians’ guns first.

How did Mao kill tens of millions? Pol Pot? Stalin?

The history of gun confiscation is the history of marginalized groups being exterminated by the majority.

Just because you yourself have no such desire has no effect on what the people you give this power to will do.

To see just what a bad idea taking all the guns away is, let’s change out the groups you want to make defenseless, and see how it sounds:

No African Americans should be allowed to own guns.

No women should be allowed to own guns.

No single moms should be allowed to own guns.

No Jews should be allowed to own guns.

No LGBTQ+ people should be allowed to own guns.

Pretty ugly, right?

I hope you aren’t advocating that a gay person isn’t allowed to defend themselves from gay bashing.

I always love these circular arguments of “what about ..” This is exactly why I support a ban. Of course we can’t solve this when there is no logic or intellectual component to the debate. So there is only one possible solution: take all the guns.

McDermott says if the state legislature is not going to pass stricter gun safety measures on its own it needs to get out of the way of cities and counties that want to do it on their own by repealing the state preemption law.

If that happens, the county’s gun safety action plan calls for immediately moving on to enact stricter gun laws, such as banning semi-automatic, high velocity weapons, banning high capacity magazines, raising the age to buy all guns to 21, establishing a waiting period, and requiring a firearm safety course in order to buy a gun.

The council voted through the controversial gun storage initiative on Monday afternoon by a 6-3 margin, with the three other initiatives passing unanimously.

[No.

Just as “wrapping laws” around the purchase of alcohol and other recreational drugs didn’t improve society the restriction of a specific enumerated right not only won’t improve society it will be an infringement upon the natural right to defend ourselves.

People can make ammunition from scrap metal a few relatively simple tools. Just as with recreational drugs, it won’t be of the highest quality but it will be good enough to get the job done. And it this case the job will be restoring our rights.
