They Both Think They Own Me
[I was just listening to Applied Economics: Thinking Beyond Stage One by Thomas Sowell. One of the things he pointed out that it’s the wrong question to ask, “Where did slavery come from?” As near as we can determine slavery has been around (and continues to exist) since before writing was invented. The real question is, “Where did freedom come from?”

With this background it seems likely that the desire to “own” other human is hardwired into some primitive part of most peoples brains. This manifests itself in many different ways.

Some people are more aware of these urges than others and outright claim, “I was born to regulate.” Others have claimed a divine right from the god(s) to rule other people. Even many of those who do not claim ownership or the right to rule others for their personal benefit will insist there be a ruler to take ownership of both them and their neighbors.

It may be that brief twinkle of freedom in history was an aberration and those reaping the benefits of freedom grew too fatigued to support it (see Thomas Paine). I know that at times I feel the fatigue and yearn to have the burden lifted even as I see our freedoms rapidly disappearing.—Joe]

Thousands Lit Candles Against The Darkness of Gun Violence
[Thirdpower already covered the lie about the numbers so I will ignore the lie in Henigan post title.

Let me get this straight… it was because it was legal to have loaded guns in national parks that Anderson was murdered? If that were true then doesn’t it follow that because it was illegal to have loaded guns at Columbine High School and Virginia Tech that those murders could not have occurred?

As was pointed out to me years ago by Rolf; If crime goes down after some gun law goes into effect the anti-gun people will claim it as proof we need even more strict laws. If the crime rate goes up after the law goes into effect then that is proof, to them, that stricter laws are needed.

As near as I can tell there are no facts that can be presented to anti-gun people like Henigan which will convince them any gun restriction should be repealed.

I must therefore conclude Henigan and his kind have crap for brains.

This is actually a good test to discover whether someone is worth your time to discuss the subject. Ask, “What would it take to change your mind? No matter how improbable, what data would convince you that some law restricting firearms should be repealed?” You will be surprised at how many people say there is nothing that will change their mind.

As you walk away suggest to such people that they look up the definition of “bigot” in the dictionary.—Joe]

A response to the Brady Campaign on their candle lightings today.
[We incorporated a candle into the concealed carry side match at the USPSA match today.

I had suggested something like, “My name is and this is how I deal with people intent on deadly violence against innocent life.” Or, “The Brady Campaign wants us to light a candle today to help stop violence. But candles don’t stop violence but a handgun might.”

Don was the first shooter and he said, “I’m just going to say, ‘Candles don’t stop violence.'”

That was a great simplification Don. Thanks.

[In what universe did almost all products receive “pre-market scrutiny” before being “allowed” to go on sale? Even as far back as 1993 Sugarmann lived in a different America than the rest of us.

The ‘cop-killer’ bullets did not and still don’t exist, the “plastic handguns” could and can be detected by airport metal detectors just fine, and “assault weapons” were and are used less frequently to kill people than fists or feet.

What I find somewhat surprising is that even after decades of being disconnected from reality Sugarmann and his organization still receive enough money to maintain their delusions.—Joe]

A Tough Year for Gun Control’s Brady Campaign: Gun rights advanced across the country, and Brady’s own statistics undermined their cause.
[As has been pointed out by many others the attitude a candidate has about the specific enumerated right to keep and bear arms is a strong indicator of how they regard other freedoms. If they are opposed to the people keeping an bearing arms then one must seriously suspect they want to change the relationship.

As a single political metric for freedom It’s far from perfect (numerous counter examples could be given) but if only one measure is used it probably is the best. And in a worst case scenario the RKBA can be utilized to recover the other freedoms. It is not so with any other single measure. This is why the NRA calls the RKBA America’s First Freedom.—Joe]

[This is supporting evidence to refute those that claim CSGV does has not advocated banning handguns for more than 20 years. See also the Wikipedia article on CSGV.

There is more (posted March 29, 2002) evidence at (posted November 1, 2003) these web pages which all (posted January 21, 2002) claim (posted July 16, 2003):

CSGV supports a ban on the importation, manufacture, sale and transfer of handguns and assault weapons, with reasonable exceptions for police, military, security personnel, gun clubs, and antique and collectable firearms stored in inoperable condition.

Also of interest is the domain gunfree.org (created 19-Feb-1997) is an alias for csgv.org (created 09-Jul-1999) and is used as the reference for a number of those pages. Hence any reference to either gunfree.org or csgv.org must have been created since those domains were registered. Since both domains were created in the last 15 years claims that CSGV has not advocated banning handguns for over 20 years must be considered false.

One must also ask the question, “What would be the objective of an organization who uses the domain name of GunFree.org?” My hypothesis would be that they wish to ban all guns.—Joe]
