It is genuinely upsetting how many people celebrated Charlie Kirk’s death with “Kirkiversary” posts. Some here, tons more on TikTok. The message is clear; if you disagree with progressive orthodoxy, they want you dead and will celebrate your murder too. That includes a young father like Charlie Kirk whose major “crime” was engaging in civil debate with them.
And these posts have thousands or hundreds of thousands of likes, these aren’t fringe edgelords, this is a major view at least among the progressive base. Violence and intimidation has become an accepted strategy for them.
I hate that I have to share a country with these broken people, they must be defeated and marginalized just as much as the brainrotted elements of the Candace Owens right.
I just can’t grasp their mindset. If some leftist commentator I despised was murdered for their views, I can confidently say I would not celebrate it, and you should really do some serious soul searching if that is who you have become. This shouldn’t even need to be debated.
Celebration of assassination and poltical violence is a very dark road to go down. But after Kirk, and their celebration of Mangione, and all the cheering for Trump assassins, it is safe to say it is what a significant portion of the progressive/DSA left now believes. This is who they are.
Oh, and they want to take your guns still. You know, for “safety.”

My hypothesis is there are two different ways to model their behavior. At a more basic level they are close to the same.
1) They are unable to think rationally. As I have explained before this is a process failure (Peterson Syndrome). It is psychologically uncomfortable for there to be many other people which believe differently from them. Being part of the “one true tribe” is important to them. Other tribes are a threat to them.
2) They are able to think rationally. They know they are unable to rationally refute the opposition. They cannot tolerate the public humiliation of being wrong. Silencing their opponent is more comfortable than admitting they were wrong.
In both cases they have an investment in their beliefs. It could be an emotional investment. Or it could be a political or power investment that is being threatened. Threats need to be neutralized.
It now makes sense when they say they feel unsafe because you express an opinion different from them.
It makes sense when people call themselves “gun safety advocates.” Taking your guns makes it safer to neutralize these sorts of threats to their investments.
Prepare appropriately.
You left out, the classic cause that every other society in history would found immediately.
They are Evil.
They Hate and Lie, because that is what Evil people do.
And most functional societies knew the answer to dealing with them.
Because Americans are (mostly)nice people, we apply Suic**al Empathy , and flounder trying to deal with this disordered group.
I don’t think evil can explain 100’s of thousands or even millions of people approving the murders. My model of evil is something that would show up in many parts of their lives. They would have difficulty living a quasi-normal life. These people have jobs and relationships. Cult followers? Yes, groups of people can do evil things when influenced by an evil person. But this group of people do not appear to be led by a charismatic leader. An evil “religion”? Sure. Communism/socialism/Islamic-fundamentalist/etc. would qualify. But that is covered by my tribal model.
Am I missing something?
Can evil exist in degrees, or is it binary, an either/or situation ?
Does one have to be 100% evil, or would a lesser percentage, or over a shorter period, adequate to enable a sufficient degree of “being evil” to qualify as “evil” ?
If that hypothesis is correct, what is the minimum level of evil necessary for the overall result to be evil? Where is the tipping point ?
Is a single completed event – or even unfilfilled intent – enough to categorize one as evil ? Or does one have to be consistently evil over a period to qualify as evil ?
Don’t discount the banal evil that can be done by people with a spouse, some kids and a pension on the line.
The torturers’ break room is stocked with chipped “World’s Greatest Dad” mugs. The condemned get a respite because the team is doing a retirement party for Bob after 45 years. They got him a silver plated thumbscrew in a cut crystal base. Tomorrow Bill is doing brown-bag training on advances in low-RPM dental drills.
Worse is the deliberate evil of someone that is doing it to people for their own good. They’ll go to bed and sleep the slumber of the justified, content that they has done good in the world by sending them to the torturers to be fixed. They’ll pop out of bed in the morning ready to do it all again, and harder, because (some of) the angels are on their side.
Tirno, you probably know this, but for others “the banality of evil” was a concept first articulated by Hannah Arendt in Eichmann in Jerusalem: A Report on the Banality of Evil and elaborated on by others in books such as The Banality of Evil: Hannah Arendt and ‘The Final Solution’
I don’t have answers to these questions.
There are also the people who don’t actually care about the issue at all (whatever the issue) and simply want to gain and keep social standing.
You might consider this part of your group 1, and certainly SOME are… but plenty aren’t. They think quite rationally about “what do I need to do to keep/gain social standing”, and then they apply that thinking to the task.
They don’t *care* about being able to “refute” anyone – that is unimportant to social standing. It’s not “being wrong” that bothers them in the slightest (it is largely irrelevant, I think – “that was last week’s position” is sufficient). What bothers them is “not having social approval/status”.
One of the ways I’ve seen this put that I enjoy a good bit is, “They worship at the church of Current Thing.” There are *rational* reasons to do this… at least, once you assume all the problems in the world are “little people” problems that you will never have to worry about.
It’s best if that assumption is entirely subconscious and never considered at all, thus, it is largely a problem of the always-been-wealthy – food is just, like, *available*, duh! Same with all the other necessities of life.
It can reduce to “part of the tribe”, I suppose, but it’s “the BEST part of the tribe, of course” or something like that.
It is also people who have experienced severe bullying by the “in crowd” and thus work to avoid ever being the target of their ire, but I *think* that group shrinks as people get older… I hope it does, for LOTS of reasons.
I think Larry Correia boiled it down to its most basic form. There are two kinds of people. Those who want to control the way others live and those that want to be left the Hell alone.

I think that many of the “national divorce” supporters are trying to be transgressive, since secession has become associated with the Confederate States of America. They picture themselves as grabbing the third rail and daring the Left to object.
But the Left doesn’t object. They love the idea of getting a portion of the United States all to themselves, where they can stamp out all dissent, and then using that as a base for guerrilla war to take over the rest.

Not possible. There are new ones every generation – people who want *power over people* and are not morally restrained in how they get it.
Oh, sure, we can lower the number of followers by making it not “the cool kids” anymore, but that’s temporary, too.
Since we’ve never tried this how can you know it wouldn’t work? (see: LeMay, Curtis; “if you kill enough of them they stop fighting.” There may be other less drastic methods offering sufficient success but since we haven’t tried any of them, how are we to know? It certainly seems “giving them jobs, respect, attention and money” doesn’t work..)

It’s been tried – see “WWII” among many others. The people in leadership in regimes like the Nazis (even fairly low level leadership) are very largely those kinds of people. Heck, even the relatively low-level grunts like the SS have a good chunk of such people populating them. We killed a LOT of those people in WWII.
Next generation still had the a full cohort. Not as obvious in West Germany… but quite apparent in East Germany (where another such regime had conquered them and had plenty of such people to fill the ranks).
It’s a part of the human condition. Such people are ALWAYS available, as best I can tell. Getting rid of them is right up there with the Soviet “New Man” in terms of level of effort (read: “body count”) to even partially achieve.

Charlie Kirk and all of the rest of us may be the nicest people on Earth and like animals, little children, sunshine, lollipops and rainbows, but we’re still all Nazis (or Fascists, depending on this week’s definitions), and therefore guilty of whatever can be proved or imagined, and nothing we can say or do will disabuse them of that opinion.
You’ve probably seen this around the internet, but it’s completely true:

Similarly, they are not evil because they are leftists. They are leftists because they are evil.
Putting it differently: they didn’t start as well meaning naive Nellies who just accidentally came to the dark side. They began as sociopaths who regard other people as existing to give them pleasure, and picked the evil political movement most likely to force other people to do it.
I like to be as generous as I can. I think only something like 1/4 to 1/2 are like that, give or take, are actually and intentionally evil. The rest are largely useful idiots – the “follow the cool kids” types (who don’t care what the actual issue is) and naive / mal-educated morons who really do mean well.
Now, that’s not including the actual leadership, the ones who actually call the shots (so, NOT the brainless mic-holders they put forward like AOC) – those are all the evil types. They know what they are doing. It’s intentional.
When the brainwashing has so firmly taken hold and time is of the essence, there can be no luxury of fucking around with creative solutions to this. These wretches are a distinct minority, and as such, must be contained like the disease they are. We must, I am sorry to report, call the Orkin man.
