After a generation of peace, Europe tells its people to prepare for war
I think this is Europe’s problem to deal with. But it is hard to imagine the U.S. staying out of it if another European country goes all in.
I want an underground bunker in Idaho before things go hot.
Nice of them to take this view while not doing anything serious to defend themselves.
As for “damage its economy” — they have done that very successfully on their own, due to the long established infestation of socialism. I suppose you could argue that Russia (the USSR) helped bring that about, but that’s of course hardly new. And then there is the little detail that Europe (Germany, to be precise) helped create the USSR just as France helped create theocratic Iran.
Now that EU bureaucrats have been so terrible for decades, it’s becoming obvious to voters who might be willing to boot out the current crop of elite parasites.
Unless those elites can shift the blame, and the discussion, to some other scapegoat.

You’ll want to have on hand, in unopened boxes, some HEPA (or even better, ULPA) filters that are approximately the same size (24″ x 24″, whatever depth) as a low-volume box fan for emergency ventilation of your underground bunker. These should be rated to stop 99.9% of sub-micron particulates at a minimum. You’ll need an emergency 115 VAC back-up power source to run it for a few hours a day; a deep-cycle marine battery with a solar panel charger and an inverter work well for this. You can improvise fan housing-to-filter connections with cardboard, plastic sheeting and duct tape that will be sufficient for a couple of weeks of fallout protection. You won’t get much air through such a filter with a fan, but it will be enough to ventilate a small room in which you’re sheltering.
Don’t forget to filter the air that’s feeding your woodstove, too. Even better is if you have a woodstove with a dedicated air duct feeding contaminated air directly to the combustion section of the stove. You’ll be momentarily exposed when you add wood, but the whole idea is to radically cut down the exposure since you won’t be able to completely eliminate it. Just like when I brew beer, I’m not trying to “sterilize” my equipment but rather simply “sanitize” it to prevent bad bacteria and wild yeasts from contaminating it.
If you absolutely HAVE to go outside, then plastic rain coats, boots, and gloves with duct tape, and full-face N95 masks (already fitted and experimented with) will suffice to keep the particulates off your body for short exposures. You’ll need an improvised airlock and washdown station separate from your living area before you come back inside.
If it’s biological rather than radioactive, you’ll want to have lots of chlorine bleach stored somewhere inside.
Here in TinyTown™ in NW Wyoming we’re in the fallout pattern for several of the missile bases that will be targets for first-strikes. I’m planning on just sitting on the deck and watching the show until one misses and lands a little too close to us. With our medical problems we won’t live more than 3-6 months once our medications run out after a first-strike anyway. The brave, new world will have to be picked up and made by younger folks than us.
Thanks for the pointers. I had planned to just get a HEPA replacement filter for my ventilation system. But the HEPA filters are not made that thin (1″).
I did some more research. My ventilation system will accept MERV 13 filters. This is not HEPA, but it will remove smoke and some bacteria. That will take care of a lot of the dust.

MERV 13 filters will raise the static pressure considerably over even MERV 12. As a rule “standard residential” HVAC systems don’t have the SP capacity to withstand anything above 12, some will choke on anything above 9 or 10.
My HVAC works just fine with 12s but going to 13 drove the SP high enough that it would cause multiple problems long term, and it’s not just “put in a heftier blower.” Duct sizes need to go up as well, and particular attention paid to restrictions (90 degree bends are the first thing to change, then the duct outlets themselves).
The manual explicitly says MERV 13’s can be used on the outside air intake.
If your underground bunker is reasonably air-tight and you’ve got a very, very good filter on any intake air for the furnace/HVAC system you might still want to consider having the materials to rig up a fan-and-filter system to run for a couple of hours every day, just to clean the indoor air. Figure the interior volume of the one or two rooms you actually need to be in (living/bed, kitchen, and bath) and close off the rest of the bunker.
Then figure how much air the fan is moving with that high delta-P filter in an improvised duct (anemometer averaging a half-dozen locations in the duct will be close enough) and run the entire room air volume through it a few times each time you run the air filter system. It can make a huge difference in the particulate count in the room air.

Our NATO membership would require us to step in, and I’d argue that Poland, the Baltics, and other Eastern European NATO members are still worthy of such assistance.
IF such an unfortunate event were to occcur, this would be the time to follow through for once and totally elminate the ability of this aggressor to wage war for at least a generation (and they seem to be working towards that end themselves, right now), then encourage the Eastern European nations to make their own treaty organization…one that does NOT include the US, and then we leave NATO. The ones who have the will to protect themselves will have had practice, aid and assistance, and breathing room.
Unless, of course, the CCP uses the opportunity to take Russia after the conflict, either as a vassal or through outright annexation.

IF by “The West” you mean the Western European members of NATO tht have been ghosting for 4o or so years, you’re absolutely correct. If you’re talking about the Eastern Europeans and Scandi’s who are arming up, they possiibly can. If you’re talking about all of NATO including the US, in conventional war Russia doesn’t stand a chance. And China will be waiting to pick the corpse of Russia.

Which bomb? NATO using nukes isn’t needed to remove their ability to wage war, and it’s unlikely their arsenal is in much better shape than their conventional forces. They have to use tugbroats to move their aircraft carrier at sea. Between the maintence intensive nature of them, the culture of lying up the chain of command to say everything is on schedule and in spec, and the propensity for lower commanders to sell off anything and misdirect funds I doubt there is much left that’s actually functional.
