Intelligence is a Social Construct

Quote of the Day

Believing this is even possible is about one step away from naziism. Intelligence is a social construct.

This was in response to this post:

I can see the potential risks of Eugenics but believing intelligence is a social construct is proof positive this person is an idiot.

I am increasingly of the opinion that if someone uses the phrase, “is a social construct” you can and should disregard everything such person says.

While I not as enthusiastic about this as Aella, I am far closer to her point of view than this warrbo character:

This is maybe the most exciting technical development we have right now

  1. Communism is a social construct. It does not exist without a central government and massive imposition of force.

  2. Table manners, weddings, funerals, religion (gonna get in trouble for that one…), all social constructs. It seems to me if humans do things as a group for seemingly arbitrary reasons, it’s probably a social construct. For example, there is no longer a scientific reason not to eat pork or to separate meat and dairy, but it’s still done in some social groups bound by common traditions.

    • Even if you believe in one or more deities, a moment’s reflection reveals that many aspects of the details of religious practices are indeed socially constructed. Even if God told you to do it, and how, and when, and how often, there’s plenty of room left over for interpretation, and if the group chooses to do it, there’s your social construct.

  3. “Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not: nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not: the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.” Calvin Coolidge

    • Genius and true education will make effort and persistence go further, higher, faster and harder.

But, lacking effort and persistence? Silent Cal has it nailed.

  4. Funny the lengths people will go through to create the most intelligent of humans.
Then do everything in their power to destroy, brainwash, and control what little intelligence it has left.
If intelligence actually mattered in life. This planet would already be a pretty nice place to live.
Instead the most intelligent (cunning is more like it) have set us on a path to societal destruction.
Immigration is violent invasion. That’s what intelligence has bought us.
    Genetic shopping? What a joke.

    • You are confusing what the average person wants for their own family, and what TPTB want for the masses that they despise.

More could be done by testing a population and sterilizing the bottom 10% by IQ of the population, and cutting all social welfare to the next lowest 40% (i.e., don’t subsidize stupid people breeding).

Not saying we should, but looking at the big picture, you’d need to scale things a lot bigger than a handful of elite families selecting the perfect embryo.

      • “More could be done by testing a population and sterilizing the bottom 10% by IQ of the population, and cutting all social welfare to the next lowest 40% (i.e., don’t subsidize stupid people breeding).”
        Scary brother.
The wife and I often congratulate each other on the fact that we were borne before parents had the ability to put their children on drugs. (Not that we didn’t drug ourselves as soon as we could.)
You want a blue-haired, over pierced, trans-gender genius being able to sterilize you and your family?
My uncle was on the lockheed skunk works. His wife was equally as intelligent.
Both of their children were retarded.
They would have sterilized both of my parents.
But of their 5 sons. Two were pushing 140’s IQ.
All 5 were highly productive to society.
I was a ditch-digger. And there is NOTHING in the modern world that I have not touched and brought to being in this world.
From the gold in your teeth and computer chips. To sidewalks you walk on. Everything in between.
I would love to hear Micheal Bloomberg tell Joe Huffman that anyone can be a farmer.
And the only thing wrong with welfare (as we all need help now and then) is that it is not temporary.
And should never be allowed to be a life-long entitlement, let alone generational as we see today.

  5. What struck me in this debate is how quickly people jump from “high misuse risk” to “therefore the underlying phenomenon isn’t real.” The existence of eugenic abuses doesn’t erase the fact that cognitive traits have measurable heritability — it just forces us to think hard about what guardrails are legitimate. Treating genetics as taboo or pretending it’s all socially constructed is a great way to guarantee that the only people who work on it are the least scrupulous.

    • OK, how many people think this clacker comment has merit relative to the referenced subject matter versus a grammatically correct AI word vomit?

Seemed a bit facile to me.
