  1. The way I see it, they’re distilling their followers down to the True Believers, the ones who’ll be on board for anything – the soldiers. They can’t have absolute power over everyone, but they will have absolute power over some.

    That’s always how it works. The process of power consolidation doesn’t quit. It may end up as a minuscule troop of dedicated followers in a small camp in Guayana, or a band of renegade generals surrounding an imperial palace, but once it takes hold it doesn’t stop until there’s absolutely no other option.
