The liberal anti-gun crowd has appropriated his memory and words almost exclusively, but if you do a real reading of his works he is a much more realistic person than supposed. He frequently said his advocacy of wilderness was partly about love of wild places, and partly about a need to have a safe place to launch attacks from when the government eventually went too far.
