When Seconds Count

An armed parent was there.

  1. Note that the article shows a photo with the slogan “Gun control now” shown prominently, and it quotes gun confiscation activists at length. But it doesn’t mention, or even hints any understanding, that if those people got their way the carnage would have been far worse because the good guy with a gun would have been a good guy disarmed by the government.
Either that, or they understand this and want it that way.

    • “Either that, or they understand this and want it that way.”

I wouldn’t say they *want* it that way…

… but I would say that they find it a completely acceptable state of affairs if it gets them more power.

      • Oh no… they want it that way, and from what I hear the Hero committed a felony by bringing a firearm onto school grounds, even though he had a CHL.

Apparently the Oregon legislature removed the legality of CHL holders carrying on school grounds some five years ago or so.

I *ALMOST* want to see the guy charged, just so we can point out the end result of anti-gunner’s legal wet dreams.

        Almost.

        • Reminds me that Bernhard Goetz (subway shooter 1984) was charged with attempted murder, assault, reckless endangerment, and several firearm offenses. The jury subsequently found Goetz only guilty of one count of carrying an unlicensed firearm .

        • I doubt he will be charged even though the law is as you say. Bend may be the most leftist part of the dry side but that makes it more conservatives than the wet side.

          • Wanna bet?

A prosecutor in that town, maybe not in the Portland area, would be facing a very hostile jury.

        • “Oh no… they want it that way”

No, I really don’t think they do… that would imply too much caring about the “little people” (negative amounts of caring is still a form of caring – the opposite of love isn’t hate, it’s *apathy*).

It’s a means to an end, nothing more. If they think it benefits them, they do it, and if they think it doesn’t benefit them, they don’t. That’s it.

  2. I also note that an unarmed female teacher took the perp down and was wrestling with him when the armed parent showed up. He most certainly saved her and others. This is another example of heroic actions by school teachers, administrators and support staff who are generally unarmed. So give them the tools to be more effective. It was good luck that the armed parent was there but teachers are always there. Another thing to do is take your kids to the range . A six year old at Uvalde recognized a malfunction (common in this type of murder) from watching his parents at the range. He bolted past the fumbling gunman and 10 others followed. They all survived.
    .

  3. Stop with the “arm teachers!” Teachers are only about half of the adults routinely on school campuses – custodians, maintenance, counselors, administrative staff, gardeners, aides, etc. Just eliminate “gun-free schools” and let any adult legally on campus carry.
These killers go to schools knowing that they are unlikely to face resistance. Change that and introduce doubt of success in their minds.
Schrödinger’s Gun – the bad guys should have no way to know who around them might be armed.

    • I said teachers, administrators and support staff. Given school geography, each has a role to play. Teachers in the classroom fort up and protect the kids. Support staff and teachers not in classroom interdict the choke points and keep the perps pinned down. Administrators help with this and serve as guides when the cops show up. The hero girl dad was just good luck. He was driving by and saw the perp storm the school where his daughters were. I agree with the elimination of GFZs but who is actually there is the school staff. So they need to be armed and trained and there needs to be a tactical plan.

  4. The barrier to the logic of training & arming school staff is that it offends a very basic desire of the vast majority of humans to avoid conflict & unjust actions. There is, in a large subset of those people, a refusal to believe that practicing the ability to inflict the very type of pain they abhor is the only sure way to minimize the actual occurrence of it. Thankfully there are some who understand that situation & are willing to prepare for it.

    • That’s is called “magical thinking”. It has no logic involved, purely emotion. “I want it really bad, so it becomes true.”

“Gun Free Zones” are the purest example I know of of that particular thing, but there are plenty of others.
