Not Wrong

There is more than a little truth to this.

  1. Has Clayton Cramer seen this? On occasion he has been known to use Linux. Usually when nothing else works, IIRC. But he’s skillful enough to make it work.

  2. Linux gives people access. What they choose to do with it is up to them – some of them will indeed do things like that (that was a very fun and enjoyable video).

Other OSes metaphorically weld the hood closed so people CAN’T do that… but they can’t do a lot of other, useful things, too.

It’s similar to gun control and other arguments about freedom. The few who do the crazy things get the attention, but a whole lot of people just have better lives without getting any attention.

    • Absolutely. One of the main things that pushed me away from Microsoft (and never led me toward MacOS) is that they try to “stupid proof” their OS enough that people who actually know what they’re doing…can’t.

I started using Linux Mint a couple of years ago and it’s great. It’s got enough user friendliness that you don’t have to be an expert to install it and use it, but you still have access to all the under the hood functionality if you want to go there.

The thing that struck me about the metaphor the video was making: Yes, linux users can climb under the hood an operate things from there, but with modern versions, they don’t have to and can sit in the seat behind the wheel if that’s what they choose.

Microsoft and Mac try very hard not to even give their users the option of digging around under the hood.
