Gun Registration Demand Is Largely Ignored

Quote of the Day

Through Dec. 31, 29,357 people had registered about 69,000 prohibited guns and over 42,000 accessories, according to Illinois State Police data. A little over 2.4 million Illinoisans have firearm owner’s identification cards, meaning only about 1.2% of FOID card holders registered guns or accessories subject to the ban, the statistics through 2023 show. However, the true degree of compliance with the law is not possible to determine, since residents with a valid FOID card may not own guns or accessories that are subject to the ban.

As it should be, and almost always is, the demand to register guns is mostly being ignored.

  1. However, the true degree of compliance with the law is not possible to determine, since residents with a valid FOID card may not own guns or accessories that are subject to the ban.

But do you know who CAN own guns or accessories subject to the ban? And CANNOT get in trouble for failing to register them?

I’ll give a hint: There are two applicable subsets of the population, with some non-zero amount of overlap between them.

Answer: Felons and other violent criminals, and government agents.

The government always exempts itself and its agents from any gun/accessory ban. Always.

And per Haynes v. U.S., a felon who is barred by law from possessing a firearm cannot be be punished for failing to register it; registering the gun would be self-incrimination, therefore requiring it of him is a 5th Amendment violation.

Registration of firearms and accessories is never about “safety”. How can it be, when the people most likely to cause trouble with banned items (e.g. BOTH of the aforementioned subsets of the population) are the very people against whom the registration requirement cannot be enforced?

  2. And as an empirical example we have the NFA itself. Americans were enjoying themselves with full-auto firearms.
Then a few criminals used them in commissions of crimes.
Then some criminals in government demanded registration and taxes.
Then they closed the registry. And would not allow anymore new ones to be purchased.
What they said was not an infringement then. Certainly is one now.
Maybe people aren’t as stupid as the government would like them to be?
(Just because you believe your own argument, doesn’t mean anyone else will.)
That, and government is surely projecting their own ignorance on everyone else. With the sinister bent that they have a right to force you to comply.
I truly fear for our politicians and criminal castes should the SCOTUS refuse to uphold 2A’s prohibitions. Our hope and faith in that court the only thing saving them.

  3. The purpose of such laws is not to get ALL guns registered. The leftists are evil, not stupid…at least not the ones running things. They pass such laws knowing the vast majority of people won’t comply. Compliance, while nice was not the point. Once the law is passed they simply wait till they come across someone who didn’t comply and then CRUCIFY THEM publicly. Do this a few times then offer an “amnesty” getting some people to comply. Rinse and repeat. Eventually they either get a significant portion of their subject to either comply or become felons.
Either outcome is acceptable to the communists in charge. The leftists are patient. They know they don’t have to succeed all at once. They merely have to keep trying and eventually they will win….as long as they are allowed to live. They NEVER give up.
