Frequent Errors in Overmentalization Related to Lower Levels of Oxytocin Receptors

Interesting. VERY interesting:

Lower levels of oxytocin receptors are associated with more frequent errors in overmentalization — a tendency to erroneously attribute complex mental states to others — among patients with borderline personality disorder, according to new research published in the journal Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica. This discovery sheds new light on the relationship between the oxytocin system and the cognitive processes underpinning social interaction in borderline personality disorder.

Borderline personality disorder is a condition marked by intense emotional turbulence and impulsive actions. Patients often struggle with a profound fear of abandonment and find it challenging to maintain stable and satisfying relationships.

  1. “a tendency to erroneously attribute complex mental states to others”

That means “thinks they can read minds, but they’re actually bouncing off the inside of their own skull”, doesn’t it?

      • I find it VERRY interesting that the study authors are describing with great detail the thought processes of people with BPD.

Have they evaluated their own oxytocin receptor levels?

Spent perhaps a semester’s worth of research trying to determine where my ex fell on the chart of PDs, and found only fuzzy groups of attributes that felt like classifying a mammal by descriptions in a book on botany. Much easier to just simply conclude it’s not your problem and get out.

  2. Would the concerns of someone I’m close to that neighbors were conspiring to tie her up and rape her fall into this category, perhaps. Or that any activity that annoyed her in the neighborhood (someone cutting down a tree, running a leaf blower, or conducting some shooting practice) was being done deliberately to antagonize her?

I’ve been having some real interesting times
