Sebastian wonders about the executive order “Publish a letter from ATF to federally licensed gun dealers providing guidance on how to run background checks for private sellers.”:
Does this mean that we can just get the check without the 4473?
I was informed by the ATF of the letter (here is my private copy) at 12:03 this afternoon.
The answer is no.
I managed to get a copy of it. Basically seems to tell FFLs what they already know. Action!
OK, so let me get this straight. We can do a private transfer and be done, or I can voluntarily take my time to go through an FFL, get both our names and the firearm serial number in a government database, bring up the possibility of NICS holds and confusion, risk going to federal prison if you make a grievous mistake on the 4473 or the firearm serial number has a history unknown to me, and be subject to state waiting periods all for the cost of the FFL’s transfer fee and sales tax? Wow, sign me up!

Shhhhhh. Maybe people will think this bold action made us somehow safer, with the added benefit of poking that poopy-head Wayne LaPierre in the eye with a sharp stick.
