Making a Deal Shouldn’t be Difficult

Greenland could become 51st state under proposed bill

Of course, the people living in Greenland do not currently want to be part of the U.S. but it seems to me it should not be that difficult to make a deal irresistible. There are only about 56,000 people living there. Offer everyone $1,000,000. That would be $56 billion. In comparison the Venezuela operation is estimated to have cost $25 to $30 billion.

That would be a lot more palatable to people than a military takeover and the U.S. would get the same or better outcome. Perhaps President Trump and others are floating the military (the “stick”) options to make a different approach (the “carrot”) all the more appealing.

  1. I don’t want Greenland for statehood. Try to imagine the kinds of Euroweenies they’d send to Congress.
    Likewise Alberta.

    • Compact of Free Association is the alternative.

They’re not a state, so they don’t get to vote in American presidential elections or send senators or representatives to DC. Might get a status like Puerto Rico. May be otherwise treated as US citizens.

No visa travel to and from.

US Military takes role to defend them and gets land to do so as seems fit.

US investment to improve their economy, which also benefits us.

  2. Two things- it would be better suited to being a territory.
Maybe the “old school” way has some merit: Barron Trump is 19, will be 20 in March, while Princess Isabella of Denmark is 18 and in her last year of HS. Political marriages have happened across nearly all of recorded history, and the tabloids would go bonkers. The simple fact is, they could both do a lot worse.

  3. I’m picturing an enormous and obviously colder Guam. US sovereign territory but not a state. For less than 100 billion? Best Danegeld ever! If you’ll excuse the expression

  4. The funny thing is all the pearl clutching about buying territory, when the most recent case of the US buying a territory was “Danish West Indies”, another Danish territory. We now know it as the US Virgin Islands. That was in 1916 as I recall.

  5. “The total cost of NATO to the USA is significant, with the United States being the largest contributor to NATO’s defense budget. In 2024, the U.S. contributed approximately $860 billion, which accounted for about 3.49% of its GDP. This contribution represents a modest portion of the total NATO budget, which is estimated to be around $1.26 trillion. The U.S. alone accounted for 68% of the total budget last year, highlighting its crucial role in supporting NATO’s collective security efforts.”

Whatever it is to us or Denmark. We already paid for the place about a 100 times over protecting the little bastards from their neighbors.
If we want the place for a garbage dump. Europe’s got shit to say about it.
There wouldn’t be a Denmark, or Europe without us.
Just Germans or Russians that talk funny.
