Billions of People Must be Delusional

While belatedly* responding to comments I was able to articulate something I think is important. I am making it a post to get wider attention:

I don’t see delusions about someone believing they are a god as significantly different than someone having the delusion gods exist or do not exist. There are billions of people that must be delusional on this topic. I don’t know for certain which ones are truly delusional, and which have it close to right. Everyone could have it wrong and are delusional.

* The comments I was responding to were posted when I was in Idaho working with extremely limited time to get some things done on my underground bunker.

  1. Someone having the delusion gods exist or do not exist.
One of these beliefs isn’t delusional. One must be true (and thence not delusional) and the other can’t be true and thus is delusional. The coin will either rest on heads or tails.
I’m putting my money with Pascal.

  2. Regarding belief, my high school comparative religion textbook claimed “if millions of people believe something, then it’s probably true”. That reasoning appeared obviously absurd to my young mind and was the start of religion and I drawing apart.

  3. Truth is. Were all delusional.
Here is the difference. We have a built in place in our minds for worship. And if you don’t put God there. You generally end up putting yourself or something worse there.
In and of itself that’s not a problem. But it can very easily slide into megalomania.
Couple that with large amounts of money, power, and control. And you get what we have here today.
People that think all they’re ever going to get is today. So why not do whatever I want?
Ask yourself why all these power brokers end up doing evil crap? Rarely do they do truly good things.
Why do kings and rulers end up murdering people over the same money, power, control paradigms?
Because there is no “controlling authority” on them.
Christians are little better in many instances. But if you don’t think someone out there is meaner, tougher, smarter, and ready to kick your ass on a moment’s notice?
Why not go for it? Rob, rape, murder, steal. You see that in Iryna’s murder.
Let go 14 times. I can murder someone for the fun of it. No consequences.
Why would a just God allow that? Because this place is an illusion of reality. Where people can act out who they are down inside. And God will know who is evil and who wants to at least try to do as their told.
Why does he need to do that if he already knows who is doing what?
    So, that you convict yourself.
You don’t have to do evil. You chose too. And now everyone else knows exactly why you in hell.
That’s my .02 on it anyway.

  4. Humans appear to have an in-built need for belief. If faith in the supernatural and a God of some sort is blocked, then something else takes its place. In Marxists, their political beliefs have become their religion. Those who don’t follow the same communist faith are heretics who can be killed not only without remorse, but it’s to be celebrated. They are a literal death-cult. In many ways, Islam and Marxism overlap. That is what the Christians and agnostics of the world are up against. A death cult that CANNOT, as an article of their faith, leave you alone; you MUST submit yourself and your children to them, and they are at war with you if you do not. They both think of non-believers in their own faith as slaves, non-human cattle to be exploited without mercy or care.

  5. Everyone’s assertion about the supernatural is wrong from the perspective of someone from a different time or place. In current times people born on one side of the planet claim the existence of their god or gods, people born on the other side theirs. In past times people have claimed entirely different gods, before the current gods were even invented. And before that, there weren’t even gods, it was the sun itself, or animals, or roving spirits.

It’s not so much delusion as a deep emotional need for an explanation of the universe that keeps us from completely freaking out about death and suffering. And now we’re coming into a period where we’re starting to think the nature of existence may not even be physical, that consciousness itself may be the base material of reality, and our perceptions of physical structures are simply projections (coming back to Plato, as it turns out, which is pretty amazing).

Christopher Hitchens should be required reading/viewing in every junior high and high school.

    • So should Vox Days “The Irrational Atheist”. Where he calls out Hitchens directly.
Then when you think you have a grasp on things, try Chris Langan.

      • The same Vox Day who’s a christian nationalist, white supremacist, and misogynist who thinks women shouldn’t be allowed to vote? That Vox Day? And then Chris Langan, the same one who’s a raging anti-semite and racist? That Chris Langan?

If you think those are people who have “a grasp on things,” I’m guessing Mein Kampf isn’t far behind in your reading list….

        • Your hatred is blinding you.
Vox isn’t a “white nationalist,” he’s part American Indian. He’s a Nationalist- everyone deserves their own homeland for their own people.
But hey, keep on slandering people you have not actually read the works of, just regurgitate the rants of your fellow-travelers who tell you want to think about them.
WRT women voting, are you asserting the country would be worse off now if they were not enfranchised a century? If so, how so?
As for “anti-Semite,” it’s funny how a people want you to not call them out for the things the do, and God forbid, notice any patterns. (one of the first laws the Bolsheviks passed after taking power was outlawing criticizing Jews… Ever wonder why? Any idea who was running the prostitution, gay bath houses, pornography, and promoting promiscuity and transgenderism in Weimar Germany, and who might have seen a backlash against in the 1930s?)

          • So when he said “we must secure the existence of white people and a future for white children” he totally wasn’t being a white nationalist, he was being…what, again? I’m not seeing the words “Cheyenne” or “Hopi” or “Apache” in there. Maybe if I rub my eyes harder.

Then you go on to say I should defend women’s right to vote, and that you apparently think Jews were responsible for prostitution, homosexuality, pornography, transgenderism (gotta get that in there!) and promiscuity in Germany.

I really, never in a million years when I was growing up expected I’d actually have to be arguing with somebody that Nazism was bad. I thought WWII had resolved that. It’s a strange world.

            • So you think people should NOT be allowed to have a homeland, a place to be among their own culture and people?

Weird how you hate your own so much. And how you responded to the questions tell me you have roughly a common HS level of knowledge WRT history. I guess that explains your leftie tendencies.

              • And which culture and people would that be, exactly? America having been born out of waves of immigrants/conquerors at different times, I’m wondering where the cutoff line is. For a long time Italians weren’t considered to be proper Americans. Or the Irish. I gather you’re ok with them, though, since they’re white (well, the Irish anyway. Some Italians can be pretty tan)? And of course there were also waves of Chinese in the 19th century, but even though they were here before the Irish and Italians I’m guessing they don’t make the bar because they’re the wrong color and their eyes are the wrong shape? And of course the Spaniards were technically here first, so that really seems to screw stuff up timeline-wise….

I’m guessing it’s all just skin color? Do the whiter Spaniards make it in? Or is it sortof a “within the northern European boundaries as defined by 1950s mapmakers” thing?

Your screen name is “Rolf,” which is generally germanic, so I’m guessing I’m in since my ancestors were from Germany (most of them. Do the Scottish ones count?). But my wife’s family is from Macedonia, which starts to get y’know, more olive-y skin, so I’m wondering if that’s ok with you.

I get confused by the culture thing, though, ’cause clearly Italian and German cultures are very different. I’m guessing you mostly mean northern european, so Britain, Germany, the Scandanavian countries…maybe Switzerland? How about the Poles? Do the Poles get in? And really the Brits and the Germans have a very different set of cultural norms, so I wonder how you resolve that….

I’m guessing you define “their own culture and people” pretty narrowly, and probably just for whatever tribe you happen to belong to, and I’m guessing that’s Germanic/Aryan. But hey, maybe I’m wrong!

Why don’t you give us a clear definition of who’s acceptable in your homeland and who isn’t? Clear things up.

        • That’s them. The one’s with IQ’s pushing the 200 mark.
The one’s who can think so far out of the box you can’t even get close to.
The one’s that can spot the BS you swallowed a mile away and are pointing it out.
Ever wonder why they have those positions?
Because they thought through all the other crap out there and refuse to except it.
Ya, those are the guys. You would do well to read and heed what your betters have to say.

          • …so I’m guessing that’s a “yes” to the Mein Kampf on your reading list….

            • It’s funny how those who know so little of history think calling someone a Nazi is a trump card, when they have no idea what actually happened in WWII, or why the Nazis rose to power, what events spawned them.

You -do- know that Kirk was a moderate, center-right normie-con, right?

When everyone is a Nazi, it ceases to have any sting, but please, go ahead and dehumanize those you disagree with. It’s a time-honored tactic against those your political leaders plan on killing.

              • If you think Kirk was moderate your Overton Window is waaaaaay off to the right, ’cause there ain’t nobody in the “center” as defined by a Gallup poll who wants anything to do with Kirk. You notice how as part of eulogizing/celebrating his martyrdom nobody really quotes him? ‘Cause it’s super racist, misogynist, and generally repulsive to people who aren’t far right.

As for the Nazi thing: I’m just interested to see if MTHead will disavow Hitler as a source of philosophy or political ideas. I’m curious. Because y’know there are a remarkable number of folks these days who think he’s just a misunderstood guy who actually had lots of good ideas.

                • Orwellian Window.
There I fixed it for you.
                  As for Hitler?
No, he was just the other side of the communist coin.
We should have never been involved in either WWI, or WWII.
I do think it’s interesting that they always show Hilter screaming into a microphone cause he’s really pissed off. But they never tale you what he says?
                  Hope that helps.

                • You live in a leftie bubble. Kirk wasn’t the radical right. But then, what would someone who has no idea why Germans voted for Adolf know anything about the left-right spectrum. Heck, you likely think Hitler was of the political right. (hint: Nazi was short for National Socialist German Workers’ Party, competing with the commies for votes with socialized health care, heavy government regulations, etc.)

                • I have to laugh… you believe Snopes?
Heh. Thanks, I needed a good chuckle.
Remember, We are in the US, so I’m talking about left-right on the US scale, not the much, MUCH further left European scale.

  6. “I don’t mean to be churlish about any kind intentions, but when September 20 comes, please do not trouble deaf heaven with your bootless cries. Unless, of course, it makes you feel better”. Christopher Hitchens on people praying for him.

    It makes me feel better,

  7. FWIW, there are a lot more things like this popping up and being reported.

A whole lot of Dems are walking away from their party and how they are supporting the assassination of a moderate right Christian whose main schtick was “we need to talk and understand each other, because God loves all his children, even the wayward ones who don’t believe in him.”

If he was so vile and far-right, I’m sure someone like Mr Schusser can easily find a clip of him speaking (long enough that we get the full context, not just a sound-bite put together by someone who didn’t like him) saying something that is wildly radical and offensive, and post a link to it here so we can understand why Kirk was so offensive to them.

    • Oh, I’m sure I can’t find such a video. You’ve made it quite clear that you’re far enough to the right you’ll assert that his every utterance is neither radical nor offensive, and that in fact he’s not far *enough* to the right.

As for Snopes, no I don’t “believe” Snopes, I just follow their footnotes to the original sources, since they source everything. Try it, it’s fun.

  8. “When men choose not to believe in God, they do not thereafter believe in nothing, they then become capable of believing in anything.”
    ― G.K. Chesterton

A person who believes in God generally looks to that God for guidance and strength to be a better person. A person who thinks they are a god doesn’t feel any such compunction. The difference couldn’t be more stark.

  9. Free speech is great, John.
The problem is that the political left define anything that disagrees with their world-view or hurts their feelings, even if objectively true, as “hate speech” and is actually violence because of the emotional damage it causes.
Meanwhile, anything they say, no matter how inflammatory, biased, deranged, disgusting, degenerate, or blatant lying though omission is “merely free speech.” I’d like to have free speech, but not with the sort of double-standard that the left enforces vigorously with the law, cancel-culture, political and economic pressure, and now murder of those with whom they disagree.

So your side is shocked that when they cheer a literal school shooter people in the moderate middle are not supportive, and gives them pushback. No, I’m not sorry that some school-shooter cheer-leaders are losing jobs, when a man lost his life, a wife lost her husband, and two kids lost their father because he had the audacity to engage in calm and logical argumentation on the public square.

Go on, continue to celebrate a school shooter. See how many new votes that wins for your side.

    • “The problem is that the political left define anything that disagrees with their world-view or hurts their feelings, even if objectively true, as “hate speech” and is actually violence because of the emotional damage it causes.”
Almost entirely true. The only adjustment I’d make is that it’s the far left, not generically “the left.” There are plenty of folks in Seattle, for example, who find the far left (e.g. Kshama Sawant voters) completely nuts, and would like them to go away. This is still Seattle, these folks are still “left,” but there’s a very large difference between them and the Sawant hard left crowd (for example the far left goes to city council meetings, and the much larger moderate left just sits on their ass and complains on Nextdoor). If you have any real interest in living peacefully you have to make distinctions. Distinctions that, granted, the far left isn’t going to make.
And no, I don’t really know what to do about them (the hard left). They seem pretty batshit crazy at this point, and there’s an entire generation (Millennials) who are so emotionally fragile that (both left and right, though more prominently left) they can’t handle real confrontation and have decided to just go nuclear in every direction. Somehow we need to get the control rods back into the reactor, but the valve is stuck.

      • Generally, the muddled masses in the middle are largely irrelevant to political action. It’s the fringes that define the group. For all practical purposes, because you don’t control the hard left, they control you (and the party). If you get them under control, then you don’t have to die with them if things turn into a hot civil war; if the right doesn’t get you then their purity spirals will. The problem of course is that if you try to control them, they will purity-spiral and target YOU. Great allies, eh?

Unusually, today on the political right (both in the US and Europe), the middle- and hard-right has been kept largely in check and silenced by a coalition of the left, the nearly all-left media, compromised and milqutoast right leadership (RINOs), and a very effective program by the intelligence services (foreign and domestic) of “controlled opposition,” where they make sure that the “recognized leaders” as gatekeepers (people like Shapiro) on the further-right, so they are all kept under control so they don’t go off the “acceptable” reservation, so they keep the Overton Window centered on the left; they don’t let you see the real mass of the actual right, only the curated moderate-right. For example, it can be very difficult to get ChatGPT to even acknowledge that Vox Day or Owen Benjamin exist in any meaningful way, even though both are hugely influential.

There are millions who would rather save the money on deporting illegals and move right to local storage via composting. The biggest thing keeping the hard right from moving on that is they are fundamentally good people who just want to be left alone, and they know that genie isn’t going back into the bottle if it gets let out. That’s what the hard left is hoping for, because they think they can win that war. But then, they have a poor grasp of reality, let alone history.

        • “Generally, the muddled masses in the middle are largely irrelevant to political action. It’s the fringes that define the group.”

I hadn’t realized how true this was until my wife started working for the Seattle city council. It’s absolutely true in spades: the vast majority of people just sit on their asses complaining to people around them or on Nextdoor, but do fuck-all to actually engage in politics because “Ewww…politics is so icky!”. So the council gets bashed around left and right by the folks at the far edges who are most crazy and motivated to yell (on the left) or who have the most money (on the right), and the folks in the middle sit there wondering why everything’s so fucked up (spoiler alert: it’s because they can’t be bothered to get their hands dirty).

It’s a crazy way to run a government. And just reinforces the idea that government should be small so the extremists and incompetents can’t do too much damage with it.
