I wouldn’t shoot it at any metal I wasn’t able to clean up almost immediately because of the risk of corrosion. But maybe granulated sugar would work almost as well.

Get that white sand they use for ashtrays. It has a uniform size and has other uses like shooting bags.
Get the sand from the Olympic women’s sand volleyball court. Because of the uniforms, err, uniformity of the grain size.
Hmm. I wonder how a regular pellet gun would work if you loaded it right.
