It is easy to take liberty for granted, when you have never had it taken from you.

Dick Cheney
[While this may be true I keep wondering if enough people really notice when its been taken. Intrusive, pointless searches at airports, "Real ID", socialized medicine, firearm restrictions, McCain-Feingold, the Kelo decision, etc. I think a worse problem is that it is too easy to accept your chains. That has not always been the case and I wonder why.--Joe]

NTs famously go along, to get along. Some folks think Jefferson was an aspie. The Virginia Gentlemen, and the Scots-Irish rabble like myself, were not accustomed to take any back-chat from anybody. Too many biddable peasants these days, methinks.

P.s. The Scots-Irish were mentioned in the Declaration of Independence, in the complaint about not allowing any more of us to immigrate here. Truculent troublemakers, we are. I must re-read my copy of "Born Fighting."

I suspect much of today's tolerance comes from conditioning in public schools. In a school where teachers have the power to discipline students, a student cannot win against 'the system', you can only manipulate it to make trouble for other people. (fehris Bueller's day off to contrary, excuse my spelling.)
