Utopia is not one of the available solutions to violence in our society. Only incremental improvements are attainable through repeal of victim disarmament laws and through implementation of effectual, affordable measures. Objective assessment of the risks and benefits of various proposals will assist development of rational and effectual public policy. Hysterical, ineffectual, unconstitutional, and merely symbolic measures only squander time, money, and energy that are better devoted to effectual solutions and realistic goals.

[Emphasis in the original. I have used this argument (utopia isn't an option) myself in a gun control debate against a communist. They didn't really seem to get it. They wanted to keep trying just as they want to keep trying new variations of Marxism; "All we need is to have the right people in government." I wish I had come back with, "Marxism and gun control was responsible for over 100 million dead last century. Do you want to donate your body to the next attempt at utopia?" --Joe]

The anti's response to your statement of historical fact will then be some variation of, "You sound a wee bit paranoid there, Joe. What are you afraid of? And who said anything about 'Marxism'? Why are you throwing epithets around like that? All I want are reasonable, Progressive restrictions that fit in with the times."

The person I was debating with readily admitted they were a Marxist. For example, he insisted their should be no private ownership of homes. Government should distribute them on the basis of need. Barb and I had no need of such a large home with only three children. There were people with five children would be a better fit for our house and we should have something smaller.

On the gun issue he, "Didn't want to live in a world where you had to carry a gun around to protect yourself." I told him his only option was to "check-out" of this world because his fantasy world wasn't an option. For as long as there has been life there has been predators. As long as there are predators people have an inalienable right to use the best tools available to defend themselves from such predators. His response was to reiterate he didn't want to live in a world where people needed to carry guns.

To him, it was utopia or nothing and he isn't, at least so far, willing to take the "nothing" option.

That's a very rare Marxist-- one who openly admits it. Maybe there’s hope for him.

You might try nailing him on the fact that Marxism is a very high level (highly sophisticated) system of predation. You build yourself a nice house that's "more than you need", or you hire it built, etc., and the socialist's first thought is of how to devise a way to take it from you by force.

He doesn't want to live in a world wherein you need to protect yourself from predators, and yet he wants to create the worst form of wholesale predation ever devised.

I don't want to live in a world where we have to worry about house fires; therefore I'm going to get rid of my fire extinguishers, then lobby for a fire extinguisher ban.

I don't want to live in a world where there is theft; therefore I'm taking all the locks off my doors and I’m going to try to force you to do the same.

I'll start telling my daughter to pick up all hitchhikers, and to take rides from any strangers who make the offer, because I don't want to live in a world where we have to worry about our kids' well-being.

I don't want to live in a world where there's VD and unplanned pregnancy, so I'll start having unprotected sex every chance I get, and promote a ban on condoms and birth control.

I don't want to live in a world where there's any concern over traffic accident injury, so I'll cut out the seatbelts from my vehicles, disconnect the airbags, break lights, and turn signals, and go with a single master cylinder on my breaking system, then force the same onto you.

I don't want to live in a world where we have wonder if people are telling the truth, so let's propagate lies as a matter of public policy. That way, you can safely dismiss everything you hear.

But wait-- he, like Jim Jones and the gang, doesn't want to live...
Well, break out the kool-aid. You wouldn’t want to live in a world where we have to be concerned about the quality of our beverages, so poison them with cyanide.

"All we need is to have the right people in government." Yet who do they find to run their "Government" but Lawyers and Politicians - and they expect to reach Utopia as a result? They're engaged in a clinically insane philosophy.
