[I've noticed several link to my blog from Handgun Podcast over the last few weeks and finally got around to listening. That he says he is falling in love with my blog is just fine with me. And don't forget that I admire myself for my modesty.

I haven't finished even one episode but anyone that feeds my feelings of self importance is going to get my attention long enough to listen for a couple episodes. I've downloaded all the episodes and put them on my Windows Phone 7 Series and am listening to it as I type this.--Joe]

I have approved a new ad which should be showing up in the right column soon. It is the first "adult" ad I have received. It's probably not safe for work. And unfortunately it's too late for Christmas or I might have ordered something as a present for Barb--even if they are in the U.K.

Oh well, Valentines day and her birthday are coming up soon.

If you read my blog directly you probably noticed a few cosmetic changes today. Mostly it was a side effect of me fixing the comment text entry box which was all messed up. I had to learn a bunch about Cascading Style Sheets to fix the problem and tweaked a few things along the way.

I moved the "Bloggers I Have Met" list to a different page because it took up so much real estate on the sidebar. I also updated the list. If I have overlooked someone please let me know. It wasn't intentional to ignore anyone--except for wife Barbara.

Yes, she has a blog--with three posts since it was created on September 13, 2009. I refuse to link to it until she posts a little more frequently. Currently she has had a total of 13 visits. I think all of those visits were by me.

I'm upgrading this blog to a newer version. There will be some disruption. In general there should not be any loss of content but if you are in the middle of leaving a comment that could be lost.

I expect the upgrade to start at about 16:30 PST (about 15 minutes from now).

Update: All done.

I put in about 15 hours at work yesterday and I have been up since about 5:00 AM this morning working too.

We have a major deadline tonight and I expect I'll be very busy until late tonight and then crashing after that.

My blog and email may get some attention tomorrow or the next day.

Even though I haven't gotten out of bed yet (aren't laptops great!) and have already made a couple of blog posts I have a very busy day ahead of me. In addition to the usual things like attending to hygiene, food, and clothing I need to make up a couple hundred rounds of .40 S&W and head out to the range for a USPSA action pistol match. After that I have to return to Redmond to help The Borg conquer the galaxy.

I turned off Captcha on the comments to help some people that were having problems with it. If you see a bunch of spam comments start showing up don't worry about it. I'll take care of them by tomorrow morning.

Update: The pistol match went fairly well. I messed up a reload on one stage or else I might have actually won. I came in second instead:

One of the most interesting stages was called "If it had been 1911". This was to simulate 9/11. Here is a picture:

We started sitting in the chair and had to stay within the box. There is a Pepper Popper on the left in the shadow of a no shoot which activates a swinging target coming out from behind the stack of barrels on the right (simulates a hijacker come out of the bathroom).

I got 50 points (out of 55 possible--an 11 round stage) in 8.31 seconds for a hit factor of 6.0168. Pretty good, I figure, for almost all head shots except for the mover. Especially with all the hostages to avoid.

That white stuff on the ground? That is snow. SOME wimps stop shooting outdoors in the winter--but not at our range in North Central Idaho.

I just found out while I will have Internet access while on our cruise there is a price involved: $0.75/minute.

Roaming charges on my cell phone are $2.26/minutes.

Unless I can find something cheaper I'll be offline until sometime on Sunday.

No referral URL, no hit on the main page, just a direct hit to my Popularity contest post. It looks like there is an email going around that organization with a link to my post.

Still nothing visible from the Brady Campaign I.P. address. But just one solitary hit might have gotten lost in the noise. Either that or the fifth of Jack Daniels and 30 count bottle of Ambien started kicking in.

Update: Scratch that. They just stopped by looking at something else:

Sorry about that.

By: Joe Huffman Wednesday, September 09, 2009 8:57:39 AM (Pacific Daylight Time, UTC-07:00) ( Blog stuff | Bloggers | Boomershoot | Work )

I didn't do as much blogging this weekend and yesterday as I normally would have. I had extra things to do at work the last few days. Plus I went out to the Boomershoot range and played in the dirt (pictures to follow) all day on Saturday.

At work yesterday afternoon I gave a short presentation and demo (actually I had Gang do the demo since his demo was completed and mine wasn't) despite mangling a few sentences got laughs and applause at all the right spots and I should be able to give blogging a little more time tonight.

I really want to say something about "Prags" v. "threepers". It appears I accidently lit a match near a powder keg with this post (see here and here). Maybe late tonight I'll have something...

The boss is going on vacation for a couple weeks to celebrate his 25th Wedding Annivesary (which isn't until December but contrary to suggestions they are not celebrating early in case they don't actually make it that far). Instead of this little mouse being able to play while the cat is away he asked that I be the cat while he is gone. And as he brought me up to speed on the things that needed my attention while he was gone he told me the demo I'm working on that he absolutely must have by the 18th (two weeks from now) is actually due next Tuesday (one working day)*.

I worked until almost 20:00 last night then went to the range and put a couple hundred rounds down range. Blogging will probably be light until after Tuesday as I will be spending most of my time working or at one of three different ranges.

*To be fair, it was as much a surprise to him as it was me.

By: Joe Huffman Thursday, August 20, 2009 11:03:49 PM (Pacific Daylight Time, UTC-07:00) ( Blog stuff | Gun Rights )

Late last night I got a link from Instapundit to my Did we just win? post. Early this morning I got a link to the same post from Say Uncle. A little bit later the same post was linked by Michael Bane.

Reynolds and Uncle were characteristically brief but Bane said something that was almost embarrassing to me:

Joe Huffman of The View From North Central Idaho and the majordomo of the Boomershoots has emerged as an important voice in the gun blogosphere, and I think today's column shows why...

I didn't think the post was all that strong. I was pushing the envelope with it. I really was overstating things some. I knew it, but figured I could put up a plausible defense of it if I really had to.

But regardless of how shaky the ground I was on something on the order of 7000 (adding a "fudge factor" for the RSS readers which don't show up on Sitemeter) people read it in a single day. The day isn't quite over yet and here are the numbers compared to a typical day of about 600 visits:

I've spoke about gun rights before crowds of 500 to 700 before. That was a little intimidating but I was very well prepared and confidant of my material. But a crowd of 7000?

It kinda cool that 7000 people in one day read at least a sentence or two of something I wrote. But it's also kinda...well different. I grew up on a farm and went to two room grade school nearby that had eight grades for a total of about 30 kids. I didn't have a lot of social contact until I went to a high school where I was in the biggest class ever (the record still holds) which was 125 graduating seniors. The entire town of Orofino, at it's peak, was only about 3500 people. Yet, twice that many people in a single day read what I wrote and a well known (in some circles) T.V. personality says I'm "an important voice in the gun blogosphere". Wow. As Sebastian said while I was writing this, I'm just another guy with an opinion.

I think maybe I should be more careful of what I write.

It always gives me a warm fuzzy feeling when one of my enemies stops by and sees what I have to say about them. I looked up the IP address from the Sitemeter visit description below and it resolved as being from Washington D.C. That combined with the search words "coalition to stop gun violence" leads me to believe it was the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence looking to see what I had to say about Josh Horwitz:

# Saturday, February 28, 2009
By: Joe Huffman Saturday, February 28, 2009 4:37:06 AM (Pacific Standard Time, UTC-08:00) ( Blog stuff )

A few days ago in comments it was strongly suggested I drop the Neanderthal tag-line. For example:

But I've never been fond of ''Ramblings of a red-necked, knuckle-dragging, Neanderthal.'' Those words have bothered me for years, every time I visit your site, over the years.

Before I dive in, I openly state that I approach this from a marketing/advertising angle. It's my job to wrap my mind around slogans n' such.

I understand the concept of seizing control of negative words. In some situations this technique is effective. However, I've never liked the tongue-in-cheek words quoted above. You, Joe, and your cohort Lyle, are *nothing near* rambling, knuckle-dragging, or anything near Neanderthal.

and

I direct lots of people (including representatives in the media) to this blog. I cringe every time I have to do this, because the first thing they'll read is the header. Yes, readers will get to the hearty content, but self-deprecation *does not* work in the case of this blog.

I thought about this quite a bit and decided I needed to give a little more history.

Barb and I went to high school in Orofino Idaho--Home of the Maniacs. We went to college at the University of Idaho (as did/do all of our kids) where we were Vandals. So maybe calling myself a "red-necked, knuckle-dragging, Neanderthal" comes natural. The Maniac name has been under attack for at least 40 years that I know of and they/we proudly stuck to the name. "You think it is insulting and/or degrading to be called a Maniac? That's your problem. We're proud to be called that."

I see advantages and disadvantages to using the tag-line. The disadvantages have been outlined in the comments to the post linked above. I think those disadvantages are minor. I readily admit I'm not a marketing person. But while a case might be made that I am attempting to market ideas I'm not really interested in people that are so susceptible to a "marketing image" that they are unable to "get past" the tag-line. If they get hung up on that then they are, in many ways, my enemy. Distortions such as "assault weapons", "weapons of choice", "sniper rifles", and "Saturday Night Specials" are in their domain and those type of people are who I attack. If those type of people happen to be on my side of an issue I'll probably be tone it down some but I still will find them contemptible.

The advantage of having a tag-line like what I have is that my enemies underestimate me. Keep in mind I use "enemies" as a shorthand for "philosophical/political enemies", not enemies in the sense of literally "kill or be killed". Read the post for the details but basically my enemies already think of my kind as stupid, violent, racist, women hating, and crude. Giving them a tag-line that agrees with their prejudices causes them to stop their mental processing at that point. And they treat me as such without processing the actual facts and logic of my writing. This leaves them more susceptible to attack. For example, they sometimes have attempted to claim they are better than me because of my (supposed) lack of education. Informing them that I have a MSEE (Electrical Engineering) and asking them what degrees they have causes them to go strangely silent. When I appear to fit their preconceived notion of a gun owner they attack with far, far less than adequate resources. This makes it all the easier for me to counterattack with overwhelming force.

So, the bottom line is I'm not going to change the tone of the tag-line but I might be persuaded to change "Neanderthal" to "Maniac". I still consider myself a Maniac but that doesn't fit the stereotype the anti-gun people have of us quite as well so I favor Neanderthal at this time.

Sorry Stephanie (and others), you are going to have to keep cringing for now.

I've finally dumped my old hosting provider (Servergrid who was really flaky) for all but the most trivial of sites to port. This blog was the biggest obstacle and is finally functional. There are still bugs from the admin side but as near as I can tell, so far, the user experience is working correctly. Let me know if you have problems.

Do you like the new theme?

I'm going to be attempting to move the blog.joehuffman.org and joehuffman.org domains to a new provider today. You will notice some disruptions.

I'll attempt to capture and merge any comments left on the old domain during the transition. But if something gets lost please don't think I intentionally deleted it.

Thanks for your patience.

Yes, my blog was down from about noon on Thursday until early this morning. My hosting provider had (and still has some) problems with a couple of their DNS servers. I really need to move to another provider.

It also affected boomershoot.org, joehuffman.org, lewistonpistol.org, lcwildlife.org, scottfamilyplace.org, jameshs.org, kimhs.org, xeniajoy.com, and email to recipients at those domains. If you didn't get a response from email to people at those domains you might want to try sending the email again. The sites in italics above are still experiencing problems so you might wait another few hours before retrying on them.

Sorry about that.

In the future people are welcome to use one of my alternate email addresses such as JoeH AT[please no spam] modernballistics.com which is through another provider.

Update: The domains are coming are slowing coming back online. I'm removing the italics as I verify they are working again.

Update2: I've moved xeniajoy.com to the new provider and boomershoot.org and boomershoot.com are in the process. Please don't send email to the boomershoot address for about 24 hours (8:00 AM January 26 PST) as I work out any bugs that might show up and the new IP addresses filter through the Internet.

Update3: Grrr... the new provider had been working fine for months with ModernBallistics.com and WhenProphecyFails.info. Now it is down after I moved XeniaJoy.com and all the Boomershoot sites over.

My Modern Ballistics for the Field software is essentially completed (as long as there are a fair number of people using it software is never done). And I'm debating with myself as to whether I should start work on a Leftspeak to English conversion website or if I should work on some explosives modeling software.

The Leftspeak project would be easy and fun and only take a few days in my spare time. The explosives modeling software will probably take months but be far more useful.

Any votes?

The answer is yes.

The Mercedes Guard Pullman is built to level B6/B7:

High-Protection vehicles, engineered to the European B4 resistance level, resist large-calibre revolver ammunition and offer particularly good protection against the increasing threat of drug-related and violent street crime.

Highest-Protection vehicles, engineered to resistance level B6/B7, provide effective protection against the threat posed by terrorist attacks. Their armour is designed to resist rifle-launched projectiles from military weapons which have a velocity almost twice that of bullets fired from a revolver. They also offer resistance to shrapnel from hand grenades and explosive charges.

According to this page the resistance levels are as follows:

  • B1 rifle .22 lr RN/Lead 10m
  • B2 hand gun 9mm Para FJ2)/RN/SC 5m
  • B3 hand gun .357 Magnum FJ3)/CB/SC 5m
  • B4 hand gun .44 Magnum FJ4)/FN/SCP 5m
  • B5 rifle 5.56mm x 45 FJ4)/PB/SC 10m
  • B6 rifle 7.62mm x 51 FJ2)/PB/SC 10m
  • B7 rifle 7.62mm x 51 FJ4)/PB/BC 10m*

The 7.62mm x 51 is .308 Winchester equivalent. Which means that even a .300 Win Mag (a common hunting rifle for those people in the Brady Campaign reading this) is not something they designed for. A .50 BMG should be able to punch through as well.

*If someone knows what the FJ4)/PB/SC etc. designations are I would appreciate being clued in. I presume it is the bullet type, like Full Metal Jacket, etc. PB might be lead (Pb is the chemical symbol), SC might be Steel Core. But that is all speculation on my part.

Thanks.

By: Joe Huffman Sunday, October 26, 2008 9:17:54 AM (Pacific Standard Time, UTC-08:00) ( Blog stuff | Home Life )

I'm always a little embarrassed and uncomfortable when someone says something nice about me or something I did. This is no exception and for more than the usual reason. The number one reason was that Mark made his post on Friday and I didn't notice until this morning.

Mark gave me a "Superior Scribbler Award":

He had this to say about me:

Joe Huffman, who blogs The View From North Central Idaho, as well as trenchant observations of the political scene from the perspective of a well-trained and -experienced gunny. Joe always seems to have the bons mots for the moment, whereas I generally have the esprit d'escalier.

Additional reasons number two and three were that I had to look up two phrases to figure out exactly what he was saying.

As per the rules of the award I have to post the rules:

  • Each Superior Scribbler must in turn pass The Award on to 5 most-deserving Bloggy Friends.
  • Each Superior Scribbler must link to the author & the name of the blog from whom he/she has received The Award.
  • Each Superior Scribbler must display The Award on his/her blog, and link to This Post, which explains The Award.
  • Each Blogger who wins The Superior Scribbler Award must visit this post and add his/her name to the Mr. Linky List. That way, we'll be able to keep up-to-date on everyone who receives This Prestigious Honor!
  • Each Superior Scribbler must post these rules on his/her blog.

The five most-deserving Bloggy Friends deserve some thought.

In terms of "Superior Scribblers" I would have given the award to each of my three children had they actually put their best writing works on blogs. From the time they were old enough to write essay's and papers I have been super impressed with the quality of their work. But only Xenia has a blog and it's more social than representative of her writing. Here is something from James and Xenia. I also have stuff from Kim that would definitely qualify but none of it is on the web (hint, hint).

They must have inherited this from their mother. I always had an extremely tough time writing until I was in my early twenties. It was just extremely painful and difficult for me to think of anything worth putting into words.

Barb on the other hand wrote lots of stories and got excellent grades on her writings all through school. And then there was the book she wrote but never bothered to try and get published. She said, "It was just for practice." Here are some samples of her work:

  • Can't Say Goodbye Again. Very short romance. Written for a contest in the Writer's Edge Ezine (defunct web site).
  • The Medicine Cabinet. This is what I call one of her "Anti-Romance" stories. Others have compared it to Hitchcock because of the suspense, story twists, and surprises. Very good stuff.
  • The Rose. Another "Anti-Romance" story. Definitely Hitchcock like.

She would definitely get an award--if she had a blog and put her best work on it.

Enough with the potential nepotism.

In line with having to look up words, as I did with Mark's work, to understand the post I have to give an award to Roberta X for The Adventures of Roberta X. She writes with a vocabulary a little bit above my comfort level at times but she puts interesting twists on things.

In terms of "interesting twists" (extreme snark is a better description) Tamara K with view from the porch also gets an award.

Alan Korwin and his blog Page Nine gets an award for inspiring a lot of my alternate ways of viewing things in the world of gun politics. And that doesn't even count all the books he has written.

I don't know who it is but the VPC Blog has to get an award. Wow! Just Wow! He or she really does a number with the satire.

Yeah, I know, that's only four. But with all the recognition to my family members can't each of those count as 1/4 of an award each?

My current web hosting provider situation appears to have stabilized enough that I'm not too worried about things at the moment and my new provider has problems with my blog software. Therefore I'm going to make the porting to the new provider a background task rather than a Priority 0 (a Microsoft thing that means you don't work on anything else until this is taken care of) issue as I was doing.

I can get my blog to sort of work on my own server running IIS 7 in full integrated pipeline mode but I have permission issues when I try to run it on the new hosting provider's server. I have a couple solution options for it and will work on those in my spare time. In the mean time I'm going to try and catch up on a few blog topics--after I catch up on my sleep.

This blog crashing thing must be "going around" in the gun blogger community. Rob Allen (his blog is Sharp as a Marble) had his blog crash yesterday.

Normal blogging from me should continue tomorrow.

My hosting provider (ServerGrid.com) hasn't answered my email and I have given up on them. I'm still working on finding a new web hosting company. I've looked at bunch and even paid some money for one that I tried out. I'm not entirely satisfied with what I see and hence all available time is spent trying to find a solution. I didn't have all that much time available this weekend because Barb and all three kids were in the Seattle area and we were doing the vacation thing a lot of time time. See, for example, Xenia's pictures from the Seattle Aquarium and the zoo.

I have a bunch of domains that need to be hosted with lots of requirements so it is taking a lot longer than what I had hoped it would.

In the meantime my websites and email are flaky (more so than usual) and I'm not putting any effort into blogging although there are some things I really would like to comment on. Sorry about that. Maybe in a couple more days...

Update: I believe all my email and websites are now working correctly. Part of the problem was a messed up namesever that I now have corrected. I'm still moving to a different hosting provider (probably GoDaddy). I'm doing some testing and still have some minor problems to solve with my blog in that environment but I'm getting very, very close.

Yes. I'm having (more) problems with my hosting provider. Content is missing. Access is problematic. This applies to not just to this blog but Boomershoot, my email, and other sites as well.

I'm working on it. It might be this weekend sometime before things are straightened out.

The top ten gun bloggers (it was a rigged election--I know it must be because I won) are going to Blackwater USA next month for some training with Todd Jarrett all sponsored by Para.

We aren't being trained as mercs but I figure it's a good story to tell people and I love the shock value.

Para is supplying the guns and has asked each of us what caliber we want. I asked for .40 because that is the pistol caliber I most frequently reload. Sorry, that wasn't an option. My options were 9mm and .45. I have all the components and equipment for 9mm so I initially asked for that. Then a minute or so later I asked what the capacity on that gun was. It is 9 + 1. Arghh! 9mm and it's not even a reasonably high capacity? I carry 18 + 1 in my .40! Okay, so if I'm going to be stuck with a low capacity gun I might as well go with the larger caliber. So it's the .45. It's a 1911 style gun and I can use it in the Single Stack division (I currently shoot Limited) for USPSA competition.

Now I find out that this isn't exactly a 1911 style as I think of it. It's a "Light Double Action" trigger instead of a single action trigger! The 9mm they offered has a single action trigger. Hmmmm... It's looking like we're talking the lesser of two evils here.

Okay. I'll give them chance. I'll still go with the .45 but this might be putting me at a disadvantage with the bet I have with Caleb. He's going with the 9mm and he is spending a lot of time practicing.

Uncle is doing a survey to resolve his similar quandary.

Rob is going with the .45.

Doing a Google blog search for "schumer" (as of right now) yields my post in the number 31 position.

How did I discover this? Via my sitemeter I discovered someone at the U.S. Senate had done such a search:

I changed a setting on my blog a few days ago and apparently there are some bugs associated with that feature.

It turns out that some of my blog posted only showed up for me. I wondered why some of my posts didn't get the attention I though they should. Now I realized that  their invisibility contributed to that.

The rest of the world was being deprived. Once I realized this could mean the end of the world as we know it I changed the setting back to the original. Still the postings did not show up. I finally hand edited the .xml and the missing posts appeared. The RSS feed still didn't work but it was 1:30 AM and I went to bed anyway. This morning I found another field in the .xml that needed to be fixed so I went all geeky on that the RSS feed was populated and probably everyone is wondering, "Where did that come from?"

So now you know. I'm using a "daily build" of software under development and, surprise, surprise, it has bugs. But you probably already knew that from all the time my blog waits several minutes to respond or just plain says, "Service unavailable." Now that Boomershoot 2009 registration is almost complete maybe I can spend some time on upgrading my blog software.

Via a link to a young woman with a Tommy Gun from Uncle I found the more interesting (for me) video on guns in Hollywood and in particular the Miami Vice scene. I made a post on that scene 20 months ago and it still gets residual hits nearly every day from all over the world.

It appears the Brady Bunch stopped by for a visit. They just saw the one post. It was such a mildly worded post though. There are other posts I wish the Brady Campaign people had read instead.

Even if they don't recognize it at first having their bigotry repeatedly pointed out will have an effect on their morale and dedication to their evil cause.

Just a couple hours ago I was showing Say Uncle what a high proportion of my referrals were coming from him via his link to me. Uncle's referrals just became noise.

My blog just got an Instalanche via this post (my post was A time machine and scoped rifle ) by Glenn Reynolds (thank you Mr. Reynolds):

Update: At the dinner tonight (Glenn Beck was awesome!) I bragged to Kevin that I had an Instalanche. He said, "Yeah, I know. Ask me how I know." I replied, "They visited you after visiting me?" "Yup." I just looked at his sitemeter. Over 20% of Kevins hits were from referrals from my post on the time machine and a scoped rifle.

More numbers for most of the day:

By: Joe Huffman Wednesday, May 07, 2008 10:01:08 AM (Pacific Daylight Time, UTC-07:00) ( Blog stuff | Gun Rights | Quote of the Day )

Once the right to keep and bear arms is separated from its long-established tether to a militia purpose, it is unclear what legal standard gun laws would need to survive constitutional challenge. There is little doubt, however, that recognition of a broad private right to be armed will create a new presumption against the constitutionality of gun laws, whereas currently there is a virtually absolute presumption in favor of their constitutionality. Guns would achieve a specially protected constitutional status imposing unique limits on the legislative authority of the elected representatives of the people that would apply to no other dangerous products. Ironically, regulation of guns, the only publicly-available consumer product designed to inflict lethal injury, would be required to meet a higher constitutional standard than regulation of cars, lawnmowers and other dangerous products capable of inflicting lethal injury, but not designed to do so.

Dennis A. Henigan et al
Director of the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence Legal Action Project
Some time after March of 2007
Second Amendment Fantasy--The Brady Center’s Critique of the Parker v. District of Columbia Decision
Emphasis in the original.
[Henigan et al overlook two important points:

  1. Federal regulation of cars, lawnmowers, etc. is prohibited by the 10th Amendment.
  2. Regulation of a products unintended consequences is much different than that for which it is designed.

Ignoring the first point for today and concentrating on the second point a little thought will reveal the regulation Henigan supports is much different than that of cars and lawnmowers.

A regulation requiring a self-propelled lawnmower to turn itself off when the operator releases their hands from the controls would be analogous to something like requiring a gun to tolerate being dropped without discharging. Which, if it were done by a state legislature, I wouldn't pick a constitutional fight over. A regulation which restricted self-propelled lawnmowers to government employees is analogous to the type of restrictions Henigan advocates.

Beyond the above points the 2nd Amendment specifically protects the right of the people to keep and bear arms. So yes, assuming the Heller (formerly Parker) decision goes our way, guns would achieve a specially protected constitutional status imposing unique limits on our government. This was the original intent of the 2nd Amendment.

Therefore a more succinct response to Henigan et al would be, "And your point is?"--Joe]

I almost used this exact paragraph from here as my QOTD but decided to look around some more and save that for some other time. I then saw this exact paragraph while visiting here and again was sorely tempted. As I continued to wander my RSS feeds revealed Sebastian and Kevin eliminated my backups. Either it is a conspiracy against me or great minds think alike. I'm inclined to think the later because Say Uncle has the same complaint as I do.

I was tagged by The Unforgiving Minute a week ago which was right in the middle of Boomershoot. I'm still recovering and trying to catch up on things so this is a bit late.

The rules:

  1. Pick up the nearest book of 123 pages or more. No cheating!
  2. Find page 123.
  3. Find the first five sentences.
  4. Post the next three sentences.
  5. Tag five people.

When I read that I was tagged "the nearest book" was over a 1/4 mile away in someone else's house so I decided to use the nearest book to my bed where I do nearly all my book reading these days.

From Explosives Engineering by Paul W. Cooper.

Page 123 is page 5 of "Table 9.1 Heats of Formation of Inorganic Compounds" and is not broken down into sentences. I'm going to page 124 which has some actual sentences on it.

Hydrochloric acid, HCl, will react with sodium hydroxide, NaOH, to form sodium chloride, NaCl, and water, H2O.

HCl + NaOH --> NaCl + H2O

Calculating the standard heat of reaction from the standard heats of formation, we have:

ΔHr0 = [ΔHf0(NaCl) + ΔHf0(H2O)]products - [ΔHf0(HCl) + ΔHf0(NaOH)]reactants

I would tag my daughter Xenia Joy and a few other friends but they always ignore me on the meme thing anyway. So if you sort of think you know me and want to participate go right ahead.

I wondered why I was getting so many hits from people using a search engine with the search terms "atf job description".

I investigated just a little bit and discovered if you use those search terms with Google, Live Search, or Ask my blog post is the number one listing. I don't think I know how to express how much that amuses me.

I just hope I can repress the urge to share my amusement with the next ATF inspector that visits me at the Taj Mahal.

Okay, so I'm not going to get bent out of shape and claim the ATF black helicopters are about to touch down. I'm not really in defiance of the Great and Wonderful Uncle.

What I do want to do is point out that we got the ATF's attention when we pointed out their faux pas regarding Always Think Forfeiture. Whether they give the creator of that incentive tool a promotion and/or publicly flog someone is still up in the air. But you should note that we do have an effect on them. And every minute they spend deciding what to do about getting caught in the sheep pen with their pants around their ankles is less time they have to spend infringing the rights of the innocent. It will also be a very useful thing for our friends in congress to bring up during budget hearings with the ATF. Jed did good. Real good.

Sometimes you might think you are just "preaching to the choir" and the people that can make a difference don't listen no matter what you do.

Then there are other times when you think maybe someone in a position of power is paying attention:

May 16-18 is the NRA convention and the Second Amendment Blog Bash in Louisville. Initially I said I would wait and think about it until April or so. Uncle told me to make my reservations then cancel later if I decided to because the hotels fill up quickly.

I procrastinated* for a month or so and Kevin started asking if I was going. I talked to Barb and we decided if she didn't have to work that weekend we would go. I looked it up on the calendar and found out she had to work and couldn't go. So told Kevin no and dropped it.

Last week Barb said she wanted some time with her sister in California. I prefer to avoid repressive regimes** so Barb suggested she would go to California sometime and and I could go to Louisville.

I just finished making my reservations. I got a non-smoking King bed at Red Roof for $55.50/night (Fri and Sat, Thu and Sun it’s $45/night). Most of our group is staying at the Executive Inn but it is full. Red Roof is about two miles from the Executive Inn and Convention Center so I rented a car. I’ll willing to give people rides if you want to stay at Red Roof or the Super 8 next door.

See you in Louisville!

* Xenia, this is not justification for you to indulge yourself in the bad habit you inherited from me.
** Peoples Republic of Kalifornia, not Barb's sister.

The pass was still closed (they are saying maybe by midnight one of them will be open) when I woke up this morning. I chatted with Barb for a few minutes and was reading a few blogs and posting my QOTD when I  got a text message from Ry:

We went to Beth's and I finally got on the outside of one of their six egg omelets (they have two sizes, six and 12 egg, both come with all the hash browns you can eat).

I took a couple pictures of drawings on the wall:

From there we went to Kerry Park and took some pictures:

We left the park to visit Glazer's.

At Glazer's I bought a new camera bag and some minor camera accessories.

We then continued south to Cabela's in Lacy. I have never been in a Cabela's before and Ry had only been to the original store in the Midwest. The store was pretty amazing.

The most amazing thing happened there. Someone recognized our Boomershoot coats and my hat and said hi. He said he reads my blog!

I bought a bunch of strange flavored licorice (Piña Colada and blue raspberry among others) some bullets (not loaded ammo, just the Berger, .30 caliber, 210 grain VLD bullets). Wow! Those have gone up by a factor of two since I last bought some. But I figured they weren't going to get any cheaper.

From way down south in Lacy we went way north to Monroe for the "Fun Show" as Ry likes to call them. Actually it was one of the WAC events. I walked by all the tables and didn't really see anything of much interest.

We then headed out of town a little way to visit a friend of Ry's that has a rifle range Ry has permission to use. "A couple hundred yards", Ry said. Things were in the process of changing. Soon it will be over 850 yards! We stood around and talked with the owner and a friend of his for probably an hour. Maybe next spring when there is more daylight in a day and the longer range is available I might visit again with a long range rifle.

Next we ate dinner at the Old Country Buffet and I dropped him off back at his place and came back to my bunker.

That was a nice day. It was much better than moping around writing buggy code for The Borg like I had planned.  Thanks Ry.

But the bummer part of it was Barb had an extremely light day at work and would have been able to spend a lot of time with me at lunch and then gotten off work early to spend more time with me had I been able to make it over the pass and back to Moscow last night.

It was quite a while back that I invited Lyle to blog here. Via many long conversations and numerous lengthy emails it was clear he had penetrating, even brutal, insight that others would benefit from. He told me (IIRC) for me to offer him this forum was like the P.J. O'Rourke line about giving power and money to the government. But that he would think about it. Within a day or two the temptation overcame him and he made his first post.

Lyle hasn't posted that often and I always thought he was holding back some. But then he would get links to his posts from certain bloggers I had never gotten links from and that made me a little bit envious. Still, the razor sharp penetration, straight to the bone, wasn't on display as much as I expected.

His most recent post--now that's what I'm talking about.

Kevin will be on his way to GBR in just a few hours.

In case you haven't tested it out recently (as in the last day) Microsoft's search engine was just updated and for the first time has search results on par with Google. I know the test methodology for this claim but I'm not sure I'm at liberty to reveal it but I am of the opinion they did a good job measuring this and that the claim is accurate. "On par" is not good enough to win and I expect MS will pull ahead of Google in the near future.

Having an alternative to the anti-gun owner bigots at Google is important and now you don't have to compromise on search results. Now if I can just get the message to the right person to get MS to give us an alternative to AdSense so I can drop the Google ads in the right margin of this blog.

Uncle reports having problems with Google being bigots. I had similar problems a while back and had similarly unsatisfactory results. I really wish there were a good alternative to getting advertising on my blog. I don't get a lot from them, currently about $0.80/day, but it pays my Internet related bills.

Here is the story of my experience with Google:

People have been having problems with the anti-spam feature in comments. I've disabled the Captcha and enable some other things in an attempt to mitigate the resultant spam. I need to dig into the source code and fix the Captcha and other problems but I just haven't gotten around to it.

If you have been frustrated by the comment issues please try again. I really like getting comments and don't want you to give up on it.

By: Joe Huffman Sunday, September 16, 2007 12:55:03 PM (Pacific Daylight Time, UTC-07:00) ( Blog stuff | Technology )

I did some maintenance on my blog this morning. The live comment viewer is working now, or at least it was the last couple times I tried it. I can now edit posts and have the changes "stick" which they hadn't been doing for the last couple weeks. Very annoying that last one. In order to edit a post I had to copy the .XML file for that day's entry to my personal computer, using my "geek brain" edit the .XML post which was encoded within the day entry file, then copy the file back up to the blog server.

While I was messing around with it I thought I might as well update the blogroll to better reflect reality. There are other blogs I read fairly frequently but I only put blogs that I read every post nearly every day on my blogroll. I'm sort of a purist I guess. No offense to others that I read frequently but don't have on the list. I just don't have time for everyone that I would like to read and/or that link to me. If you link to me in a post I will read your post and I will monitor the comments to it for a while. And if you put me on your blogroll I will check you out for a few days but it's going to be very rare that I am going to link to you just because you linked to me.

I know I messed up some RSS feeders as things were changing--at least mine was affected. Sorry about that.

I finally stopped procrastinating and made our travel and hotel reservations for the Rendezvous. I'll get our registration in to Mr. Completely later today.

We are flying in so that means even if the range would allow "Joe's special recipe" for reactive targets I'd be blocked by the TSA from bringing my chemistry set.

Barb and I will arrive in Reno on Thursday morning and leave Sunday evening. I'm hoping to see the same participants as last year as well a bunch of new ones. Will you be there?

By: Joe Huffman Saturday, August 25, 2007 9:47:44 AM (Pacific Daylight Time, UTC-07:00) ( Blog stuff | Home Life | PNNL )

Heather and Jon were married twenty six years and four days after Barb and I. Heather is the origin of the word "dooced". She now blogs full time successfully enough to support her husband and child.

This week I received my first performance review after going to work full time at Microsoft last year. I was shocked to discover the size of the bonuses and stock grants (James called me up immediately after his review and reported similar shock, "That is a lot of money!"). Even counting the lost pay after being dooced myself (I still need to finish writing up the full story--lots of interesting details about what really happened) in about four or five years I will be financially better off that I would have been had I stayed at the lab. I would rather do the work (for the most part) I was doing at the lab but financially I can't complain.

I've installed a new version of the blogging software. It seems to have fixed the problem I had with comments bringing down the server CPU. It runs just fine on my 32-bit Vista Ultimate home machines. But there are some problems on my website and on my 64-bit Vista machine.

Patience please...

Update: The most serious problems are solved! I can now log in and create/edit posts on the site rather than editing them on my local machine then uploading the new entry to the website, then "touching" web.config to reload the content. The comment preview still doesn't work and the comment box overlaps the right panel if your screen width isn't wide enough. But it's now usable.

Barb and I will be at the Gun Blogger Rendezvous in October at Reno. We haven't made our reservations yet but the vacation time is scheduled and currently the plan doesn't have any obstacles.

This year I'm going to bring what I call my spud gun. It actually shoots 210 grain Berger VLDs at 2915 fps rather than Idaho's famous vegetables. It was custom made by a gunsmith in Idaho and a friend of mine figured it couldn't be as a good a rifle as the one made by Arnold Arms north of Seattle. I started referring to my rifle as my spud gun just to neutralize his criticism of my choice of gunsmiths. I could have the last laugh by reminding my friend of the tens of thousands of dollars he had invested in Arnold Arms--which he lost when they went bankrupt--but that would be cruel.

Interesting. My most recent post about the TSA is getting more and more attention. Most recent is this mention in a forum:

If you really need to believe that you're safe when you get on a plane, don't read the above. If you want to realize what a bullshit fantasy "safety" through a "security" agency is, then take the red pill and click the link.

I like how he expressed that. Very nice. I remember one time not too long after 9/11 Ry was having Thanksgiving dinner with us and our extended family at my parent's place. Somehow Ry (software tester extraordinaire--finding flaws is what software testers do) and I started talking about all the vulnerabilities in our country that someone could use to cause us great damage. We were rattling things off so fast that someone had to raise their voice to get in a command to "STOP". People didn't want to know. They wanted ignorance. This is baffling to me, but whatever.

Anyway, on to what makes particular posts interesting...

Uncle and Existing Thing (via Uncle) linked to my TSA post. I was thinking Uncle would link to it when I made it. He links to almost anything of mine that is a little out of the ordinary (honest, I have only made him one offer for a free position at Boomershoot--which he hasn't acted upon. I don't think that constitutes bribery). Thinking about what makes a post interesting I made the connection to the recent career advice from Scott Adams (via Kim). I have expertise in more than one field and combining that expertise with a somewhat rare political viewpoint (pro-freedom) increases my "value". In this case it was my expertise in explosives and (computer) security.

I keep wondering if there is a way to combine all my hobbies in an interesting way. But at least for me guns, explosives, and sex just don't mix.

This is the first meme I'm actually happy to receive. A Brain Like Mine gave me a Thinking Blogger Award.

She even made me #1 in her post about it but I may be reading too much into that. It was my Jews In the Attic Test that did it for her.

Here are the rules:

  1. If, and only if, you get tagged, write a post with links to 5 blogs that make you think,
  2. Link to this post so that people can easily find the exact origin of the meme,
  3. Optional: Proudly display the 'Thinking Blogger Award' with a link to the post that you wrote (here is an alternative silver version if gold doesn't fit your blog).

I don't read that many blogs and most of them are not in search for food for thought. Hence there is only one blogger that I'm going to tag--Kevin.

By: Joe Huffman Thursday, July 19, 2007 9:16:27 PM (Pacific Daylight Time, UTC-07:00) ( Blog stuff | Freedom | Gun Rights | PNNL )

I've been sending email around to people I knew wouldn't really wait to know what happened with PNNL yesterday.  Here's the basics of what happened. I'll do the complete time-line with documentation later...

They finally gave us enough evidence that we could reasonably conclude they were incompetent rather than bigoted. It took a motion to compel before they finally gave us some of the information and then doing depositions on some people. I don't understand why they didn't turn this information over when we asked for it in our first interrogatory. It would have saved everyone a lot of time and money.

Some of the most basic unchallenged facts I had believed were false. I was told by Gina, on two different occasions, that both she and no one she knew on our team knew anything at all about the investigation. If this was true then the truth or falsity of my claim that I had not posted sensitive information was irrelevant to the investigators and the decision makers. It turns out that Newton, Wayne, and she had actually started the investigation. That Gina and Wayne knew anything at all about it was news to me yesterday. I didn't know Newton had anything to do with it until my deposition in April of 2007. They should have told us all of this in their first response as we requested. I don’t know why they hid it and required us to go to the judge with a motion to compel to turn it over. Legally they had absolutely nothing to fear from releasing the information--it invalidated my theory of the case.

My lawyer said I could possibly still win the case--but for the wrong reason. Witnesses, Newton in particular, were extremely evasive (for example, refusing to agree, even in principle, to answer yes or no questions with a yes or no rather than a nod of the head and always quibbling about words such as “that depends on what your definition of ‘complain’ is”). Newton and others even gave testimony under oath that I had hard proof was false--all stuff that would look bad to the judge and jury. And Newton even had his own personal file he kept on me which sounds extremely suspicious. The court recorder thought we were joking we told her to pack up because we were done. She thought things were going very well for us. But the bottom line is that all the strange stuff, once we had the truthful critical information, didn’t matter in the big picture so I dropped it. Even if I would have pushed on, which my lawyer almost for certain would not have done had I be so inclined, and won simply because Newton appeared to be hiding information on nearly every response it would have been a hollow victory. Battelle/PNNL would have been screwed because Newton doesn't know how or perhaps is even unable to be candid and believable. I believed him on the parts that were most important to me because I knew Newton was paranoid even when there wasn't anything to be paranoid about. And the critical information he provided fit in with other information that that until that point didn't make any sense.

We are pretty sure this is what happened:

Newton thought maybe I had posted classified (national security type) information on my blog. He talked to Wayne about it--what do we say to Joe? How do we approach him about this? But if it was classified they couldn't just handle it in private--it would have to be reported. They asked Greg about it. He didn't know so they went to Chris. Chris, Wayne and Newton debated it and decided just to be safe they should report it and the investigation expanded. It turned out it was not classified, as I knew--but they never asked me. Newton and Wayne were essentially out of the picture now. The bigger investigation which, only initially required Gina's input, turned up things that looked suspicious and everyone assumed the worst and the process continued to snowball. Finally they fired me without ever asking me except in the most vague terms to which I responded in a somewhat defiant manner. They didn’t even ask people that would have known the truth about the suspicious things they found. They just assumed, perhaps willfully, if it looked bad it was bad. Just three examples:

  1. I was accused of “excessive personal Internet use” because I averaged about 2600 firewall transactions a month to things they believed were not work related – no one bothered to compare it to what other people did. It turned out company average was about 8000 non-work related transactions per month.
  2. They assumed anything gun or explosives related web browsing was not work—which was false. I was bringing my expertise from my hobbies to my work and the investigators didn’t know this.
  3. They found a complete copy of my website, JoeHuffman.org, on the government laptop computer and assumed I was hosting the site from there. Wrong and it doesn't even make sense--the website would go down when I was traveling with the laptop if that were the case. What really happened was I hosted, at the request of Wayne, a bunch of PNNL project material on my own personal website, JoeHuffman.org for a few days when some material need to go on-line on such short notice that we didn't have time to go through the usual paperwork to get it on the corporate site. I integrated the PNNL material with my website on the government laptop computer to make sure the cascading style sheets didn't interfere with each other (I didn't really understand CSS very well and needed to make sure things were working right together). I had lots of free disk space on the laptop and didn't bother to delete it afterward.

These and lots of other cascading failures occurred during their investigation process and were completely out of my control and knowledge until the lawsuit and some the information only showed up yesterday. I was "walking on the fence" with my blogging and knew it. They couldn't quite figure out if I had crossed over or not and Bryan McMillan, my supervisor, "built a new fence" and told me not to cross over that one... so I started "walking on his new fence" with my blogging instead of being submissive. That almost for certain pissed him and others off. That doesn't really make sense to me with my world view. When I would tell one of our kids to clean their room and when they announced it was clean and I went to inspect found the room clean but the hallway three feet deep in their dirty clothes I couldn't hold back my smirk--and I would require they help me put their dirty clothes in the laundry room. Then the next time I told them to clean their room I would make sure the requirement included getting all the dirty clothes all the way to the laundry room. I would be pleased that I had such a clever child, but then I'm not normal...

McMillan, Hevland, and others may have in fact "walked on the fence" in terms of Battelle policy during the termination procedure but unless that was due to an actionable item such as a race, gender, age, etc. and possibly gun ownership issue of some sort it just doesn't matter in a legal sense. They could get away with it.

In regards to all the evidence from my web logs--such as indications they weren’t looking for information I blogged about work but instead about my political activism and that I was a firearms instructor--we explored that. All indications appear the investigation started for other reasons, invalid (some other day with the data to back it up--Newton was "walking a fence" in his testimony) but not legally actionable. The people that may have had a bias against my activism and gun activities apparently didn’t pass that bias on to the decision makers.

PNNL screwed up by not doing a good investigation and I got screwed, in part because I was in essence mocking them, but them being incompetent investigators isn’t actionable in a legal sense so I dropped the case.

Another way to look at it that is probably fair was this statement by someone familiar with nearly all the details but wishes to remain anonymous, "Joe, I see why they fired you now. You are so in control you are out of control. Until people get to know you scare them. They thought you were a loose cannon and were a risk."

It took me a lot of time to understand what "You are so in control you are out of control" really meant. It means I parsed the rules very carefully. It was all very clear to me--simplifying some, there were four types of information, Classified, Official Use Only, Business Sensitive, and everything else which was Open. The first three were carefully defined which made Open well defined. Open stuff is subject to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests--which means anyone can get access if they ask for it. I was very much in control of what I said and chose my words carefully. But I said things in ways that made them more "interesting" than Battelle/PNNL was comfortable with. I was in control but appeared out of control.

There was, in essence, an unstated policy that they did not wish to honor FOIA. FOIA was a problem for them because it was so much easier to work on things that were in the open that they, and their customers preferred that operating environment. But even though it was technically open they preferred it remain "in the dark". I honored the spirit of that but unless it were truly "not Open" I didn't keep it as in the dark as "not Open" material were required to be kept. I think this pissed them off too--I was "Walking the Fence" again by not keeping FOIA-able material as dark as OUO material.

As I said here when I first found out about the investigation, my Push the Envelope Policy has it's hazards.

As I talked to people about the results from yesterday I had one person tell me they couldn't be like me but they were glad there were people like me out there. Extremists are usually right because they care about the issue and understand it. The moderates don't care because they don't know the issue. And if you are going to push the envelope you have to accept the risk and know that sometimes you are going to have to pay a price. You paid a heavy price. I hope it was worth it for you. I wouldn't have been willing to pay that price."

I don't know the answer...I'm still thinking on it.

Before bringing my blog back online I did some performance testing while it was hosted on my own machine. This included tests with all the links, sitemeter, etc. visible. Most of the testing was done early (as in midnight until 3:00 AM) on Wednesday morning. Can you tell from my Sitemeter graphic?

By: Joe Huffman Wednesday, May 16, 2007 11:25:43 AM (Pacific Daylight Time, UTC-07:00) ( Blog stuff | PNNL )

The short story is here. Despite some coincidences I do not believe it had anything to do with PNNL/Battelle. Here is the slightly longer story I told my web hosting company:

I believe I have the answer as to why there was high CPU usage. The blogging software I'm using (dasBlog) has some very inefficient code for dealing with what it calls "Comment Views". When viewing a single post without the comments, for the same CPU usage, the number of views is over 100 times faster than when viewing with the comments.

I did some code and configuration tuning and was able to improve the performance by a factor of 2 to 3 depending on how I was testing it. There are still lots of room for improvement and I decided to just turn off the comments until the performance is more comparable to the performance without the comments. This eliminates the CPU intensive view type entirely.

This CPU expensive view mode probably normally isn't a problem except with the robots come visiting. They view the posts in all their view modes.

Would you please enable my site again?

Thank you.

I was up until 4:30 this morning getting it ready to go back online in crippled form (comments are disabled). I still have work to do to get comment views more efficient and then I'll turn the comments back on.

I need to get to work now but I'll update the story here by tonight sometime. I'll fill in the Quote of the day posts tonight sometime too.

I've been seeing some Google ads for political candidates here on my blog. In my opinion some or all of those candidates are unfit to be elected dog catcher let alone a significant political office. I think I can turn off certain ads if I wanted to but I figure the people visiting my blog are smart enough to not vote for these scumbags. And any clicks on the ads end up in the transfer of money from the candidate to me which I consider a good thing.

When the Brady Campaign was advertising on my blog I got something like just under $10.00 from them. Brady bought me lunch. Cool.

I saw the wmd.gov domain name and wondered what that might be. So I visited http://www.wmd.gov. I looked at the bottom of the page and saw the "The Honorable Laurence H. Silberman". I thought, "Hmmm... where I have seen that name before?" Then it was "OMG!".

It was Silberman who wrote the Majority decision in the D.C. Parker case. I quoted him here and here last week. The next day I quoted Paul Helmke, who my visitor was searching for, here. Helmke is President of the Brady Bunch and had issued a news release complaining that the opinion given by Silberman was "judicial activism".

So... someone browsing from the domain wmd.gov, where Silberman is the co-chairman, did a search of blogs for the name "Paul Helmke", who criticized Silberman. It's not "proof" but it's a plausible hypothesis that Silberman visited my blog.

If the hypothesis is true I hope he was pleased with what I said about Helmke.

In the process of organizing my log files and complying with the Interrogatories I came across what appears to be the home IP address of one of the PNNL investigators or someone they reported the results of the investigation from the previous day (see also the first day of investigation).

Tracing it through various websites reveals more evidence the whole thing was about guns. Among the evidence is they had a lot of interest in a picture of me with a holstered gun on my hip and interest in Boomershoot.

One has to wonder if it's because they care about what we think of them or if it's just because they want to add people to "the list".

Someone at the US Senate did a Technorati search for Schumer and came up with my QOD from Kevin Imel.

By: Joe Huffman Thursday, January 11, 2007 10:46:11 PM (Pacific Standard Time, UTC-08:00) ( Blog stuff | Gun Rights | PNNL )

My previous post resulted in some serious topic drift in my mind so I decided to make a separate post of it.

You may have noticed that I have a subtitle on this blog of "Ramblings of a red-necked, knuckle-dragging, Neanderthal". There are two reasons for that.

One reason is if you call yourself something worse than what your enemies can come up with you take a lot of their power away. This was pointed out to me by firearms/self-defense instructor Greg Hamilton who I am quite fond of quoting. He said when someone calls him some derogatory name in a potentially hazardous situation (as in someone trying to pick a fight) he corrects them by saying, "Nope, I'm a goat f****er." What are they going to do after that? It's tough to say anything worse than that about you and they don't have real means of escalating the situation without getting physical with you. And how can they justify that in their minds? It's pretty much "game over" unless they planned on going the physical route to begin with anyway--in which case you aren't any worse off than you were to begin with.

The second reason I do that is because it encourages my enemies to underestimate me. When they then apply their stereotypes to me and engage with their already half-empty brains in a haphazard way they are in for a rude awakening. I think this is part of what happened with PNNL. I suspect they believed I would never know the real reason they went looking for a pretense to fire me or that I would find out for certain they didn't actually have sufficient grounds to do so. On some level they believed I was stupid. Never mind that my official title there was "Senior Research Scientist II" or that I have a masters degree in Electrical Engineering. I was just a uppity gun nut who needed to be put in his place. Never mind that they put a pile of papers in front of me, told me they were printouts from from my websites, that I needed to "fix things", but then refused, multiple times, to let me see them. What did they think I was going to do? I wanted, nay needed, to see what it was they were talking about. I was a researcher in "Cyber Security". Did they think I wouldn't figure it out or wouldn't at least give it a try? They seriously underestimated me.

Of course allowing and even encouraging your enemies to underestimate you has it hazards. Had the bigots at PNNL not underestimated me they might left me alone rather than commit a felony against me. Or they could have just been smarter about things and made in nearly impossible for me to gather up the facts. One never knows how things might have been different but two thing are certain:

  1. They were found out and in a big way. Not only the initial hard evidence I found in the website log files but confirmation from the inside that is overwhelming. The points of fact in this lawsuit will never be in question. This was about guns (and a little bit of explosives) and me being an advocate for gun rights.
  2. Because in the general case it is so hard to prove discrimination when you do have the proof you must make the punishment much more extreme than if it were trivial to detect this sort of discrimination. It all boils down to, depending on which method of modeling is more comfortable for you, economics or risk analysis. Because of this I have an obligation to punish these bigots to the maximum extent I can. What I really want is to see them be financially ruined and go to prison. But despite talking to several lawyers none of them believe I can obtain that sort of relief from the courts. I'm not so sure, I still think it is possible, but I won't be revealing those plans, until some future date when our enemies have less opportunity to evade my goals.

I'd like to explain this second point because it's may not be obvious to everyone. Suppose, as a child, you really liked cookies and your parents rationed them out at the rate of one per day. Further suppose you could conduct one raid per day on the cookie jar, score one cookie, and get away with it nine times out of ten. If you were caught the punishment was you had to do without your cookie ration for two days. You, knowing your math well enough to compute your total cookie consumption over a ten day period with and without the raids would conclude you should continue raiding the cookie jar.

Supposing it was impractical to make it more difficult for you to conduct a successful raid your parents would have two choices to get you to obey the rules. They could either increase the probability of detecting a cookie jar raid or they could increase the cost when they did detect a raid. If you were to get away with a raid only one out of ten times the cost of conducting the raids would exceed the benefits and you would likely stop the raids. Alternatively they could raise the punishment to be ten days without your cookie ration and you again would conclude you would be better off without conducting the raids.

The same sort of thing applies to big time criminal activity. Except for certain cases like "crimes of passion" and insanity there is a weighing (perhaps at an unconscious level) of the risks and rewards. In most cases of employment discrimination against gun owners the bigots will probably go undetected. When they do get caught the chances of punishment are very near to zero. In fact, to the best of our knowledge there has never been a legal case of anti-gun owner bigotry resulting in the punishment of the bigots. That will likely be my toughest problem to solve in my battle. Because it is so rare to be detected and even when detected it is unheard of to be legally punished I really don't have a choice if I want to make a difference for anyone but me. I must go for the largest punishment I can possibly achieve. This is because in the future I cannot allow them, or others, to weigh the risks and conclude committing the crime is worth the risk.

There are certain thresholds that must not be crossed without punishment being severe and perhaps out of proportion to the crime. And yes, I agree that life, perhaps death, in prison is too harsh a punishment for the crime of anti-gun owner employment discrimination--provided the crime could be detected and punished with some regularity when it happens. That's currently not the case so we have to "make an example of them". And the example I want to make of them is, literally, to have them spend the rest of their lives in prison. This is my Biggest, Hairiest, most Audacious, Goal (BHAG) in this case. I know it's possible, just unlikely. But I want them to be aware that is what they are facing. I want them to know that is possible. And even if I can't achieve it in this case I may be able to enable others to get closer in the next case. And the closer we get to achieving that sort of BHAG the less likely the bigots are to take that kind of risk in the future. Given their conclusions about "benefits" of gun control I have serious doubts about many of these bigots being able do enough math to solve even the cookie problem above. But if we make the price of their overt bigotry a significant chance at being rented out by the quarter hour to the person with the most cigarettes they won't have to know much math to conclude they don't want to go there.

Hence by giving myself the title of "a red-necked, knuckle-dragging, Neanderthal" I lured the bigots into attacking me. I didn't intentionally do that but now that they have and I've had an opportunity to regroup I realize I'm in a much better position than anyone I know, or have even heard of, to do what needs to be done. Not that I consider myself on par with him but this reminds me of a Winston Churchill quote, "I was not the lion, but it fell to me to give the lion's roar." Just as Hitler underestimated his enemies so have the anti-gun bigots in this case. And just as the only acceptable conclusion of Hitler's war was his unconditional surrender I see no reason to accept anything different in my war with the bigots at PNNL.

Update: Minor changes were made upon the advice of an attorney.

Have you ever noticed that in winter driving conditions there appears to be a disproportionate number of four wheel drive vehicles in the ditch?

I'm pretty sure there's a lesson there.

Now there's a technical issue that I never considered until I got a 4WD pickup and experienced it myself.  When the old-fashioned 4WD is engaged, the front and rear drive lines are locked together-- they cannot rotate at different rates.  That's pretty much common knowledge (you can't turn a corner without one or more tires slipping) but it has another implication:  When you hit the brakes it is impossible for only one wheel to lock up.  Since the two drivelines cannot rotate differently, you either lock up one wheel on each axle or you lock up all four, i.e. your braking ability on ice is better with 4WD than it is with 2WD and no ABS.

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) came about because of Hanford--the nuclear facility where we got the nuclear components for the worlds first atomic bombs. Those scientists and engineers at Hanford were gradually put to work on other projects. The scope increased to where today there is virtually no scientific or engineering task that is off limits for the people there. Although when I was there I worked, literally, a stone's throw from the Hanford reservation I wasn't part of Hanford. The name Hanford still persists in the vocabulary of the people as a synonym for more that what is, technically, not Hanford.

With that as background I now present you with Hanford News where the top story of today (and probably for several days but I just noticed it today) is the story of my lawsuit against Battelle who has the contract to manage the laboratory.

What is just as interesting to me is how I happen to run across the story. It was all because someone at another national laboratory, Los Alamos, happen to come visiting:

They came from my PNNL.INFO site. That's interesting! So I looked at the log files form that site and I watched, in real time, as five different people (well, five different computers anyway) from Los Alamos poked around. They found my site via a Google search (http://www.google.com/search?q=pnnl+wrongful+termination ). I did the same search and found the Hanford New story. One person did the search and the other four soon started hitting my site directly and some of them eventually visited my blog. How interesting.

I was chatting on line with my friend Sean (Sean, I told you 10 different IP addresses but there was a bug in the script that I used to count them) as I watched in real time as one person looked at my performance reviews at PNNL. Sean suggested, "Maybe he's a hiring manager." What a kick! I took Sean out to dinner after that.

What bugs me though is that the web browsing security at Los Alamos is no better than at PNNL. I was able to determine the exact computer name of each of the participants in their visit to my website. I can't do that with visits from any other company that I notice visiting me. Microsoft, for example, has proxies in place that prevent that. Even visits from private homes, such as from my family in Moscow, Idaho are impossible to resolve to a specific computer name. What is it with these, supposedly, high security facilities that they have such gaping holes in their security?

Beating Lyle to the punch line: They are government facilities. Do you expect competence?

It was almost exactly two years after I put Google ads on my blog that I got my first check a couple weeks ago. It was for just over $100. Today I enabled another Google ads block that is supposed to be better for video ads which I expect will be the "up and coming thing".

Maybe I'll get another check for $100 after only one year instead of two years. Certainly I won't be "quitting my day job" anytime soon.

One of the rumors I have heard out of PNNL was that I had modified one or more of my sites to treat visitors from the lab differently and put "malware" on the labs network. This claim is totally false and I sometimes wondered if anyone actually thought that. Perhaps someone did because I found this. It's a report on my PNNL.INFO website in regards to spam, adware, and spyware. A number of the sites for which I am the webmaster and have some relationship to the PNNL conflict are shown to have been tested by McAfee SiteAdvisor. Others for which I am the webmaster have not been tested. I'm wondering if the bigots were trying to verify their claims by submitting my sites for analysis. If so, they failed. McAfee loves me.

It's a little bit of a stretch but it seems to me this is another bit of evidence the bigots were spreading falsehoods about me.

Interesting stuff. And not just because of the sexual aspects:

WASHINGTON: When Robert Steinbuch discovered his girlfriend had discussed intimate details about their sex life in her online diary, the Capitol Hill staffer didn't just get mad. He got a lawyer.

...

If the case goes to trial, its outcome will be important both to bloggers and to people who chronicle their lives on sites such as MySpace.

In October at the Gun Blogger Rendezvous Say Uncle was telling a few of us about his efforts to stop smoking. The part I remember most went something like this, "After three days I'm at the point where I can either smoke a cigarette or choke my wife. So I go outside and smoke a cigarette." The next day he also told us he wasn't able to tell jokes but that is a different story which I didn't believe either.

Yesterday Uncle had this to say:

After reading the details of his grievances it sounds to me like he hasn't smoked a cigarette for a couple weeks. Has anyone checked on his wife recently?

http://www.topix.net/forum/us/atf gathers news and blog mentions of ATF and people at the US Department of Justice (hi!) visit those websites. I wonder what they thought of me saying "The ATF has no constitutional authorization to even exist let alone enforce illegal laws."

Of particular interest to me is that the "User Agent" string of the browser included the unusual item "DOJ3jx7bf". This item looks like it might be a unique identifier for a particular Department of Justice computer. If so then one can find out what that particular computer/user has been viewing on all websites that you have access to the logs file for.

Hence, with the proper tools and a bit of smarts, one can watch the watchers. To that effect here is a sample which includes the search terms "harvey milk gay activist", "guns & jenny price", "john+pepper+ipsc", "dirty+gun+barrel+picture", "tannerite", and the always popular "how to make a bomb". We can also see some of the other sites our "friend" has been visiting. Examples include http://nfttu.blogspot.com/, http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=229822, and http://www.alphecca.com/mt_alphecca_archives/001891.html.

One must not get too paranoid about being watched. This applies to both webmasters as well as our "friend" at the DOJ. As I was reminded by a fellow blogger at the Gun Bloggers Rendezvous a couple months ago, there are known friendlies in the government. I don't have any particular hostility toward any of the government workers I have met (certain politicians are different story--I would like to invited Schumer, Clinton, Feinstein, and some others to permanently leave the country with nothing more than the clothes on their backs). But no matter how friendly they are most Federal workers are doing jobs that have no constitutional authority.

Note to my guests from the USDOJ and/or the ATF: You are quite welcome to leave a comment, send me an email, or get a legitimate job.

Say Uncle noticed before I did but we are both getting Brady Campaign ads via Google on our blogs. Cool. Check out the "Sensible Gun Laws" in the third ad down:

If you were to see their ad on the sidebar and click on the link it would transfer another penny or two from them to my pocket for my campaign against the anti-gun bigots. That could be fraud if you didn't really have an interest in them--but it would be ironic if it happened.

My blog evolved from a Crawly Amphibian to a Flappy Bird in just two days and in the process pegged out the inbound link-o-meter:

Actually most of this rapid evolution was due to some sort of bug in the TLB ecosystem. I've had 50 some odd inbound links for quite some time but they weren't showing up right. After the Gun Blogger Rendezvous everyone started linking to everyone else and the dam sort of burst on my inbound links.

The rise in the number of viewers late last month is probably due to all the links Say Uncle has been sending my way recently.

As you can see there are now Google ads on my blog.  I decided I made a poor gamble and lost my 'bet' so now I need to “pay up”.  I can terminate them at anytime so if I get too annoyed with them I will do that.  With the latest news on the Second Amendment being considered an individual right by the Justice Department and there not being any evidence that gun control prevents crime I think I will try pushing for a removal of there no firearms or ammunition policy again.
