I didn’t know that

There is a Martian crater named after Robert Heinlein:

HeinleinCrater

Via Amazon.

Heinlein books were a huge influence on who I am. In the last few of years I’ve been listening to the audible versions. I read the paper versions in the 1970’s and 1980’s and have many of the hardbacked books in my library.

  1. Same here! I have all of his books. I have been reading them to my children, though I have discovered that I need to buy kindle copies because I’m often reading in the dark, and because my copies are often 60s and 70s era printings and they are delicate.

I hope they work like they did on me. 🙂

  2. I insisted that my children read Starship Trooper before they were sixteen. We had quite a few discussions about personal responsibility and about politics from that book. All five of them then read The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. I think those experiences worked for them in the same way those books worked on me. Heinlein had a real gift for providing critical relatable content in enjoyable fictional content. I think that is why the impact is so pronounced. Every time I go into a 2nd hand bookstore, the first thing I do is check to see if copies of those two books are on the shelf. If they are, it is an automatic purchase as I am collecting them to give to my grandchildren when they are old enough to grasp their meaning and values.
