Quote of the day—Publius Decius Mus

Among the many things the “Right” still doesn’t understand is that the Left has concluded that this particular show need no longer go on. They don’t think they need a foil anymore and would rather dispense with the whole bother of staging these phony contests in which each side ostensibly has a shot.

  1. I did not expect a crisis until the election, but it now clear to me that the crisis has arrived. The left is now attempting to overthrow our government using any pretense.

“This is insane. … I want to live. I want my party to live. I want my country to live. I want my people to live. I want to end the insanity.”

But wishing is not reality and these are not normal times.

We are now seeing a coup take place and the Democrats are only too happy to oblige by providing the fig leaf of impeachment of Trump and if possible Pence.

Or as Publius Decius Mus said in 2016: “We’re on Flight 93”.

  2. This quote applies equally to the Republicans. They’ve tried to prevent liberals from voting entirely via suppression tactics, and when that doesn’t work they’ve created software to optimize district gerrymandering such that liberal votes are irrelevant.

I’m not seeing evidence that either side gives a rat’s ass about reasonable compromise any more.

    • “. . . reasonable compromise . . .” I don’t think those words mean what Politicians think they mean . . . jus’ sayin’.

    • Are you saying that the Left has never gerrymandered? In California the Left (and I mean the LEFT, not Liberals, who can usually be reasoned with) has had a steady march to a one party state ever since the State Senate was rendered superfluous when it was held in some leftist court decision that the Senate had to be districted by population and not by land area.

And as for compromise, don’t we complain when McConnell or some other Republican shows himself to be willing to compromise and thus a RINO in a contest where the compromise is a question of how quickly do you want the right to become a dead letter?

      • (Reads post again to be sure)

        Nope, didn’t say that.

I’m simply pointing out that accusing the left of not wanting any political competition is the pot calling the kettle black (if the quoted speaker is a conservative).

        • If you think the point of the quote, or the entire post from which it was derived, was “not wanting any political competition” then you need to reevaluate things.

The point is that the political left is willing to commit any number of crimes to destroy their opposition in their quest for power. Republicans certainly don’t qualify for any sort of sainthood, but the likelihood of them committing criminal acts to reduce the influence of their political opposition is much, much lower. We’ve had this conversation before. Gerrymandering is legal. Libel, slander, fraud, and using the power of government in such things as Fast and Furious, Operation Chokepoint, and the IRS/Tea-Party scandal is subject to court action and criminal prosecution.

It’s relatively easy to make the case the political left are the party of violent criminals. You have a much more difficult time justifying a similar claim against Republicans and Libertarians. One does not compromise with those attempting to implement unconstitutional policies through criminal acts. They must be prosecuted and, if found guilty, put in prison.

          • “Republicans certainly don’t qualify for any sort of sainthood, but the likelihood of them committing criminal acts to reduce the influence of their political opposition is much, much lower.“

I’d say the likelihood is 100%, given that they’re being prosecuted for fraud in North Carolina as we speak.

And of course we have the leader of the party, Trump, well on his way to impeachment for trying to ensure his political future and that of his party by extorting a foreign power.

Riddle me this: do you think it’s a good thing to have political competition from a leftist party? Or do think leftists as a whole have no place in politics?

          • I find your estimation of the likelihood being 100% very telling (one instance out of how many?). Please use the same mathematics to compute the likelihood of criminal acts on the part of democrats in Illinois as of January of 2013 when four the previous seven governors had gone to prison.

As to your “riddle”, it somewhat depends on your definition of “a lefist party”. Based on the orginal definition of the “political left” being the socialist -> communists spectrum, then the answer is no. Just as with theocracies, dictatorships, and monarchies the U.S. constitution does not allow such types of governments, the examples of tragedy are countless, and they have no legitimate place in our politics.

          • We have the leader of the party, Trump, well on his way to impeachment for trying to ensure his political future and that of his party by extorting a foreign power.

Please read the transcript of the call and point out the extortion for us.

  4. I suspect that Mr. Schussler will not be replying to your last question Joe. I have read the transcript and people who think that there is some evidence of extortion in the call must be using a different dictionary than I know of. I would be interested in a detailed analysis of the transcript by anyone who can provide and explain the details of extortion that are supposedly there. I can wait, but the election is only a little more than a year away, so don’t be too long about it.

    • Ok, I’ll bite.

First, we haven’t see the transcript. We’ve seen a *memorandum* of the call that details some parts of the conversation. It looks like a transcript, and the White House hopes it convinces enough people that they don’t go looking for the original. The transcript itself has yet to be released, and remains locked up on a server in the Pentagon somewhere.

Wrt “extortion in the call,” no, of course it’s not in the call. That’s not how extortion works. The conversation has to be taken within the context of the White House preventing release of several hundred million dollars in aid to Ukraine, contingent on Ukraine helping Trump. All extortion is “nudge nudge wink wink,” it’s never (except maybe in gangster movies) explicit.

That said, Politico makes an interesting argument that it’s not technically extortion because the use of congressionally-allocated funds for personal gain is something entirely extra-legal at this point: https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2019/09/21/trump-bribe-ukraine-228151

      • Joe Biden bragged outright about extorting Ukraine into dropping the investigation into his son! No “nod, nod. wink, wink” about it. (how one does that over the phone I have no idea.) On top of all this. Joe Biden is just someone running for office at this point. His Official position is just .well liked loud mouth, or gaffer in chief, if you will.
The real problem is that no one wants to talk about the Obama/ communist machine that Biden is a giant part of. And all the backdoor criminal bullshit that D.C. has been doing for years.
And anyone looking into it gets destroyed. Just ask Hillary. The most amazing part is that people like John don’t see it.

      • So you admit the publicly available transcript/notes of the call don’t support a claim of “extorting a foreign power”. What evidence do you have to support your claim?

If there was some sort of extortion going on Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky could have put a stop to it by saying so in public and/or suppling the evidence to put the evil President Trump in prison. Yet, he hasn’t.

        • “Hey man, we’re just prioritizing U.S. interests, here.”

          https://www.politico.com/story/2019/08/28/trump-ukraine-military-aid-russia-1689531

I don’t have any more evidence than congress does. If the evidence were totally explicit we wouldn’t be having this conversation.

Wrt Zelensky publicly coming out against Trump, I don’t know why not. We have yet to hear much out of him. And you know they have a recording of the conversation, so one wonders why they haven’t released that.

It comes down to whether you trust that Trump isn’t lying yet again. Given that he’s been well documented lying multiple times a day for his entire presidency, I don’t know why you’d give him the benefit of the doubt.

          • he’s been well documented lying multiple times a day for his entire presidency

            [snort!]

I’m sorry to have to be the one to inform you but nearly half the country is in on the joke and is laughing at people like you. Trump has been trolling you all this time. Why do you think the “Russian collusion” thing and every other attempt at hurting him has failed? And why else do you think his approval rating at this point in his presidency is essentially the same as President Obama’s?

This is just another instance of Trump playing with Democrats like someone using a laser pointer to play with a puppy. It’s hilarously funny to observers and the puppy never seems to understand what is going on.
