Quote of the day—Jacob Sullum

Once you realize that “assault weapons” are in the eye of the beholder, it’s hard to take seriously the extravagant promises of legislators who want to ban them. Feinstein claims her bill would “put a stop to mass shootings.” Yet even if it eliminated the millions of “assault weapons” that Americans already own (something it does not even purport to do), mass shooters would still have plenty of equally lethal alternatives.

After three decades of this nonsense, Americans may be starting to wise up. According to Gallup, support for legislation like Feinstein’s fell from a peak of 59 percent in 2000 to 40 percent last year.

The Whimsical Illogic of ‘Assault Weapon’ Bans
[At a national scale I think we are making progress. At the state level we are losing. Ultimately it will be decided in Federal courts. I think we need to fight a holding action at the state level and put as much resources as we can into winning in the courts.—Joe]

  1. But have you identified the cause of losing in some states? I’d rather win at the federal and state level than have to depend on the courts.

  2. At the state level, we need an equivalent to the electoral college, so we can reduce the number of idiots in Olympia who want to subjugate the non-urban masses. We also need to eliminate the initiative process – decent laws like $30 car tabs get flummoxed by the legislature anyway, and billionaires buy the votes to cram through their anti-gun agendas.

At the rate the gun laws are passing in Washington, me and my friends will almost surely be felons by the end of 2019. And you know, if I’m going to be a felon anyway, why not just start ignoring other infringing laws – if a bump stock will get you more jail time than a murder, why not just build an SBR full auto? With a 50 round drum mag to feed it?

    • We have the same basic problem in the people’s republic of Illinois. Heavy dem population in Chicago combined with the usual gerrymandering means rural areas simply don’t get a real say. And of course most of the political class profits from perpetuating the problems that drive blue voting so unless a ton of people wake up and smell the BS we’re kind of stuck.
Do you think if I declared war on Swalwell he would nuke Chi-town and give the rest of the state a chance?

  4. The states ignore the feds regarding sanctuary cities and countless other issues.
And since there is NO PENALTY for those states and officials that trample our
2A rights ( and all the others) they have zero incentive to cease and desist. And we are NOT “winning” at the federal level. We at BEST breaking even thanks to the Heller decision but to WIN would require federal judges OVERTURNING laws that infringe…and THAT ISN’T HAPPENING.

  5. Like many other issues going on around the world. It is not what we think that counts but what our lords and masters think. Everyone that has any power wants us disarmed. I wonder why?

  6. I communicate frequently with relatives who live in or just outside of Baltimore City in Maryland. As you may know, it is illegal to carry guns in public in Maryland without a concealed carry permit. Maryland is a “may issue” state, and it is nearly impossible for Joe Public to get one. Hence, most honest people are disarmed.

Yet every day or two I get emails to links about violent activities: carjackings (at gunpoint), murders (committed with guns), random shootings resulting in injuries, etc. My frequent comment to him is that it amazes me that ONLY the criminals seem to have weapons.

    Go figure.
