Quote of the day—Jacob Paulson

Of all the active shooter events there were 33 at which an armed citizen was present. Of those, Armed Citizens were successful at stopping the Active shooter 75.8% of the time (25 incidents) and were successful in reducing the loss of life in an additional 18.2% (6) of incidents. In only 2 of the 33 incidents (6.1%) was the Armed Citizen(s) not helpful in any way in stopping the active shooter or reducing the loss of life.

Thus the headline of our report that Armed Citizens Are Successful 94% Of The Time At Active Shooter Events.

At the 33 incidents at which Armed Citizens were present, there were zero situations at which the Armed Citizen injured or killed an innocent person. It never happened.

[33 is a pretty small sample so it’s not a fair comparison but do remember it has happened that when the police showed up they injured or killed an innocent person.

I have never been able to find the study referenced but according to Jeffrey R. Snyder in A Nation of Cowards:

A nationwide study by Kates, the constitutional lawyer and criminologist, found that only 2 percent of civilian shootings involved an innocent person mistakenly identified as a criminal. The “error rate” for the police, however, was 11 percent, over five times as high.

This is not to say that the police are necessarily stupid, poorly trained, or trigger happy.  The more likely reason is that they were not there as the situation developed and don’t know the participants as well as the armed citizen who is caught up in a deadly force situation.

  1. While this is an obvious benefit of armed citizens, let our opponents remember that the greatest purpose of the Second Amendment is for us to be able to resist them with any attempt to disarm us and later to control or harm us.

This is why I appreciate “studies” about firearms, but discount them in regards to policy decisions. The absolute right to be armed was decided in 1791.

  2. Joe: This is not to say that the police are neccessarily [sic] stupid, poorly trained, or trigger happy. The more likely reason is that they were not there as the situation developed and don’t know the participants as well as the arm citizen who is caught up in a deadly force situation.

Case in point, in which a legal CCW license holder was shot by police responding to a mall shooting: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/alabama-mall-shooting-update-emantic-fitzgerald-bradford-killed-riverchase-galleria-police-account-changes-today-2018-11-24/

Update here, in which the criminal gunman was arrested a week later: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/arrest-made-after-cops-killed-man-they-thought-was-alabama-mall-shooter/

The family is alleging a racial aspect, claiming he was shot because he was a black man with a gun. Supposedly, if he was white, police would have ordered him to drop the gun and get down, and of course he would have done it. But because he was black, no such order was given and police just opened fire.

I’m not knowledgeable enough to answer to that, but I do expect the VPC will probably count Emantic Bradford, Jr., among their “Concealed Carry Killers”, despite the fact he fired no shots but nevertheless was killed by police responding to someone else’s crime. Y’know, because he had a CCW license and that makes him a killer. Or something.

  3. All true and all IRRELEVANT. Facts simply DO NOT MATTER to the left.
The heaving teaming masses of oxygen thieves that provide the political
clout for the DNC and the commie demonrats in power are too stupid and
too clouded by the hormones of emotion driven existence to understand
rational, logical evidence. Presenting facts to them is like trying to teach
geometry to your dog. And those in charge on the left KNOW this already.
They simply DO NOT CARE. They want the only thing that matters to them.
POWER. And they will allow NOTHING to stand in the way of that quest for
power…..especially not FACTS. And anyone who thinks the media is EVER going to honestly report on these facts is more delusional than the typical SJW leftist voter.

    • I don’t know anyone remotely libertarian who believes the media as a whole would ever be honest about such matters. That’s why Joe and others are reporting these things themselves.

The truth is usually something of an “underground” phenomenon, a man crying in the wilderness, occupying much the same space as the mumbling, homeless beggars and wide-eyed flat-Earthers, and so people will cling to lies just to avoid being associated with those lower tiers of society.

“Doing the job the main-stream media refuse to do.”
      Isn’t that an old Rush-ism?

I think maybe a big part of our problem is that liars are often far more motivated to lie than truth seekers are motivated to seek the truth (much less speak the truth, much less speak it in public). The truth can be like that red-headed step child you’re embarrassed to bring to the neighborhood BBQ. He doesn’t fit in with the theme and purpose of the party.

Also; precision can be tedious, and boring, and unpopular. It’s distracting. Who wants any part of that when we can go with the flow instead, have some fun, and leave the cleaning up, the details and the tedium to someone else after we’re long gone?

“…and the burnt fool’s bandaged hand goes wobbling back to the fire.”

And what do you care if you’ve gotten yours and are already gone from the scene? You don’t want to be that sucker cleaning up and locking the doors after the pleasure pirates and the glory hounds have taken your sisters home with them in that limousine you spent all the previous day fixing up, tuning and detailing.

And who wants a sermon on foundational principles, which makes us feel judged?

No sir; we’ll sell our children into slavery, give them over to Babylon, and then incinerate whole nations for being slave nations, to avoid the truth, and when things reach their worst, and we see no way out of the suffering, we’ll pray to God for deliverance, having just then acquired “fox hole religion”.
