The twisted irony is that the whole UBC law that skozlaw harps about with his “gun show loophole” mention, would /criminalize/ someone at risk of suicide giving their guns to a friend or family member for safekeeping.
Washington State just (in the last few days) amended their UBC law to allow transfers under those circumstances. The person holding them for safekeeping must be legally eligible to possess firearms and must not use them for the duration of the safekeeping.
I’m a bit surprised that they did that.
Well I’m sure it’ll be a “loophole” they’ll scream about in later years.
I’ve read a lot of books about what the Nazis did, but also what the Soviets and the Chicoms. I’m sure Mr. Scofflaw remembers reading about Cambodia under Pol Pot, but he, like everyone else doing excessively risky behavior, thinks he’s somehow immune, and will always be a party member.
He should be advised that history doesn’t show things work that way, and even being a party member won’t protect him from the cattle cars, the gas chambers, or the gold fields. But he shouldn’t worry, he’ll be a despised “Kulak” or whatever the new term will be before that happens.
Did the bill making the changes to I594 get signed? It still appears to be sitting on the Governors desk.

Just to point out several facts for anyone reading this who might not be familiar with the Newtown murders:
1. The guns used were purchased by someone who underwent background checks.
2. The murderer stole the guns.
3. The murders took place at a “gun free zone”, where no one was allowed, even if they had wanted to, bear a firearm for self-defense.
In other words, once again, the proposal offered as a “solution” to a “problem” is not in any way causally related to the problem, so couldn’t possibly have any bearing on “solving” a similar problem in the future. Now if only there were laws against stealing and murder…
actually, George … and this is a point which is often ignored during “responses” to this kind of question:
The Mass Murderer (he whose name will not be mentioned) did not just STEAL the guns he used in his mass murder rampage:
He stole them from his mother.
His mother kept her guns locked in a gun safe.
He MURDERED his mother to get access to her safed guns, and went on to kill … well, after he had murdered his mother to get the guns, it was obvious that he had no respect for human life.
I still have nightmares about watching his anonymous face giggling while he committed the most atrocious slaughter since Genghis Khan … because he could.
NOTHING we can do, no laws we can pass, can protect our community from this kind of slavering psychopathy.
Unless we’re on-site when this freak shows up, and are able to take him down before he acts out his sick fantasy … nobody can stop him.

True. But don’t be trapped by paying attention only to the utilitarian argument. The human rights argument is independent of that. The human right to self defense — with effective tools for the purpose — is not dependent on a “greater good” utilitarian argument. It isn’t dependent on the fact that there are more crimes prevented with guns than are committed with them. The human right is every bit as much real if the balance were the other way around.
I’m pretty sure I know skozlaw from dueling with him about guns on Fark.com. He’s an idiot. You can point out an actual, verifiable fact to him, and he’ll ignore it or simply dismiss it if it doesn’t fit his world view.
