Quote of the day—Alan Korwin

Nothing points out the bankruptcy of our nation’s gun-control debate better than the mythologies that surrounds it.

Prior “common sense” proposals are perpetually abandoned. The so-called “news” media adopts each new absurd gun-control scheme dutifully, promotes it uncritically, then drops it like a hot potato when it is proven worthless and runs to the next latest greatest bit of hoplophobic (morbid gun fear) ridiculousness.

In effect the nation endures a serial mythology, with new myths invented constantly, so we lose sight of each established myth as new ones spring into the public eye.

  1. The serial mythology phenomenon is part of the legislative cycle. Whip up some fervor over a recent high profile crime in the media, lobby, advertise, vote. Repeat as necessary. You need a fresh myth, or premise, to make it seem like THIS is unprecedented, things are just NOW getting so far out of hand that we simply MUST ignore the Bill of Rights, just this once, for the sake of all that we love…

You can distill all of the Progressive/authoritarian myths and premises though, into one; “Respect for human rights is a good thing, in theory, but in these times we simply cannot afford it.”

This is followed by “Children (or insert victim class of your choice) are dying.”

Thus it shows that you want kids (baby seals, women, minorities, the planet, et al) to die if you persist in your adherence to notions of human liberty. You bastard.

  2. But .50 cals are shooting down passenger airlines!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    [I don’t really need a sarcasm tag, do I?]

  3. Never let a good crisis go to waste…

Whatever shooting just occurred is grounds for proposed laws that do not address said shooting.

    • And also: whatever act is committed by a criminal, is an excuse to create new restrictions on honest people but not criminals.
