Quote of the day—Andrew Cuomo

If the far right is willing to shut down the government because they don’t get a tax cut for the rich, then our people should have the same resolve and threaten to shut down the government if they don’t get a real gun control law to stop killing of their innocents.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo Tells Democrats to Shut Down Government Until They Get Gun Control
[He wants people to shut down the Federal Government in an attempt to get what he wants?

Don’t make any promises you aren’t willing to keep!

A less active Federal government is what we want! Shutting it down means no Federal gun law enforcement during the down time. If the NICS system is shutdown then just about anyone can get a gun without a background check (with a three day wait).

These people have never been known for the rationality and this is just another example.—Joe]

  1. Keep in mind that all governments everywhere have a simple rule for dealing with uppity citizens (or their representatives): cut service in a way to maximize pain and disruption. Lay off the essential people first, while keeping the deadwood. Shut down the things people rely on, especially those that are easily turned into newspaper photographs.

This is why firemen get pink slips and chair warmers do not. This is why national parks are shut down but the vast number of worthless agencies in Washington do not.

    • Also why school departments always threaten to cut the football team when they don’t get what they want.

In all but the schools with the worst teams, the football department actually MAKES money for the school.

But that’s the whole point, it will hurt the most people, making it an ideal hostage situation.

      • To play the Devil’s Advocate, some would argue that getting rid of football entirely doesn’t harm anyone at all. The purpose of the public schools is to teach the students to read, write, perform basic arithmetic, and to acquaint them with our civilization’s history and culture, and otherwise prepare them for both gainful employment and educated participation in the civic process.

Just so, the purpose of the land-grant university system that was established in the 19th Century was to train physicians and schoolteachers to serve the needs of the new communities springing up on the western frontier, and to train officers for the state militias protecting same. Full stop. Once again, football has less than nothing to do with the purposes of the institution.

Spectator sports have nothing whatsoever to do with any of this and never did.

  2. And note that these are the same people who demand private sale bans, demand the removal of default procedes *and* call us paranoid when we point out that they’d then be able to hold the legal transfer of guns hostage to their political whims.

  3. I don’t think Cuomo’s been paying attention. I haven’t seen anyone on “the right” threaten to make Obama shut down the government (because if he vetoes the spending bill passed by Congress, who controls the purse strings, it’s his shutdown, not ours) over a tax cut to the rich.

Right now, it’s over Planned Parenthood funding due to their … shady business practices (and massive bottom line, given it’s a “non-profit”). In 2013 it was about excessive Homeland Security funding.

If Congressional Republicans had a spine, they’d write the spending bill, defunding whatever they’re planning to defund, and send it to Obama. If Obama vetoes it, it’s his problem and Congress should then pass another spending bill defunding more non-essential government programs, not fewer. If it’s vetoed again, pass another bill, defunding more. Make each spending bill Obama gets the best spending bill he’s going to get. If keeping the government open is so important, he’ll sign one.

But sadly, no such spine exists on the Republican side of the aisle.

  4. Look to history every time a people have been disarmed the real killing had only just begun.
