Quote of the day—Glenn Reynolds

Police don’t actually protect law-abiding citizens from criminals so much as they protect criminals from the much-rougher justice they’d get in the absence of a legal system.

Burglars would be hung from lampposts, and shoplifters would be beaten and tossed into the gutter if there were no police, as in fact happens in countries where there isn’t a reliable justice system and a civil-society culture that restrains vigilantism. Reminder to the criminal class: Ultimately, we’re not stuck in this country with you. You’re stuck in this country with us.

SEE, I LOVE RAMIREZ, BUT I THINK THIS CARTOON GETS IT EXACTLY BACKWARD
[Upon the recommendation of Ry I’m listening to the Audible.com version of A History of the English-Speaking Peoples, Vol. 1: The Birth of Britain and was reminded of what professor Reynolds said earlier this month (above). The native people of Britain were conquered by the Romans more than once. After the first time they waited for several years and then attacked the Roman bureaucrats, the military, and the natives who had collaborated with the Romans. In some cities, with populations of tens of thousands, they killed every man, woman, and child.

There may be lessons here for those who are in the process of conquering our country today. Just because you think you are bringing civilization to the savages doesn’t mean the “savages” appreciated it or have been “domesticated” once you have achieved your immediate goals. And ultimately you may find you’re stuck in this country with us.—Joe]

  1. Kind of like all those muslim “refugees” heading for Europe and Germany. They might get there just in time for the EU to pull out the welcome mat… and discover that German organizational ability and technology is good for a lot more than building VWs. And the Brits, though slow to anger and very polite, dropped an awful lot of splody-things and flammables all over Europe when the situation called for it.

Think of this whole fiasco as the biggest darn military recruiting poster in the last eighty years. The next election cycle or two will be, er, interesting.

Of course, the fact that the Greeks threatened to open the immigrant / refugee flood gates in retaliation for not getting what they thought was a fair deal from German bankers is often overlooked. This situation isn’t an accident that just sort of “happened.”

    • I think the image of the English, as all cute, and fuzzy-wuzzy, might change soon.

      People have short memories.

    • I’d like to think you’re right about the Brits, but I’m afraid their population has changed in the last 80 years. The fact that people stood by and did nothing while a fanatic cut a soldiers head off on a public street just blows my mind in that respect. I doubt that even in mamby pamby CA or NY you could pull that off here. Somebody will have balls enough to put a stop to it…

      • Thus you see the reason that Labor opened the borders and instituted political correctness.

      • Preference cascade. Everyone stands around because they think they are alone. Once they realize they are not, and they start moving, the mob builds mass and velocity with staggering speed. The Nazis only won 2.6% of the vote in 1928 (12 seats). 1930 saw 18.25% for 107 seats. 1932 saw 230 seats and more than 37% of the vote. 1933 saw Germany with the Nazis gaining 44% of the vote – 288 seats. Five years and a sea change in leadership. If the pols don’t get with the program on immigration fast, we will see it again, as the ultra-nationalists promising to deal with the “illegal immigrant problem” gain votes and set about dealing.

      • Bear in mind that it is a crime in England to defend yourself or others from a criminal attack. You will suffer more at the hands of the “justice” system than the criminals will. At the moment, this is a major factor influencing bystanders of crimes like that.
In addition, virtually anything that could be used as a weapon for defense is also illegal to carry or even to possess at home, in most cases.

The British people have screwed themselves pretty badly with their choice of politics since ww2. (actually, it started after ww1, but they took a hard left immediately after ww2) It remains to be seen if they can turn it around before it is too late. I don’t think they have much time left, though.

  2. Glenn Reynolds is a much more sensible guy than most lawyers I’ve met. Protecting criminals from the rest of us is a big part of what courts are for. Secondarily, going through an actual trial helps avoid punishing the innocent by mistake. Eliminating the justice system doesn’t eliminate justice, just makes it a bit rougher.

I also second the recommendation of The History Of The English Speaking Peoples. Anything I’ve read by Churchill has been worthwhile.

  3. Nice depiction in the cartoon of Mr. and Mrs. America as helpless, quivering blobs of Jello. That’s what all leftists, criminals and jihadists (the criminal class) WISH Americans were.

The criminal class (authoritarianism) is essentially a death cult, but the jihadist wing of the criminal class is more of a suicide cult. I think it will be good to keep that in mind. Some of them would relish a mass vigilante movement among Americans, at least initially, and they have already an infrastructure in place for using such to their advantage in the media. They’ve been trying to get us to react in violence, and they’re becoming impatient for it.

  4. Found out from my Relatives in Hungary a couple of weeks ago that a “Surprising” amount of Firearms that “Disappeared” after the Iron Curtain fell in 89/90 have “Re-Appeared” in the hands of “Neighborhood Watch Committees” in the small Towns, Villages and Farms in the Southern Border Area. Seems there was a rash of Thefts and Vandalism and Crops and Livestock being Eaten by the “Poor Peaceful Migrants” as they were making their way up to Germany. Funny thing is, in spite of the EU’s Anti-Gun Policies, the Hungarian Government seems to be making no effort to Disarm those “Neighborhood Watches”.

It’s also Funny that it seems that the Word has been passed, and those “Poor Migrants” who are still in Hungary are Getting out of Dodge as fast as they can.

Self-Defense is a Universal Right. Wish the EU, the UN and all the rest of the “Socialist/Liberal/Democommie” Politicians would realize that.

  6. Interesting that the majority of the nations that were once under the Ottomans are saying “Hell no!” to Muslim “refugees.”

    • Also interesting, but mentioned in only a few rather obscure spots, is the fact that these refugees seem to be very predominantly young males. Yes, there are some of the conventional weaker victim types (children, old women) there, but look at the pictures, there don’t seem to be all that many of them. It’s pretty strange for a flood of refugees to be mostly the category of humans best able to defend themselves.
Does that mean they aren’t interested in self defense? Or does it mean they are moving to Europe for some reason other than what we’ve been told?

  7. I am reminded once again of the sigline of one Trefor Thomas from the ancient days of talk.politics.guns: “To be civilized is to restrain the ability to commit mayhem. To be incapable of committing mayhem is not the mark of the civilized,
    merely the domesticated.”
