Flavored air

With the entire Northwest on fire, it’s been smoky here for what seems like forever. Below is the view from my deck this morning, looking south and then west.

The other side of town is now invisible

Tastes like wood smoke this morning. The other day it was grass smoke.

Seventeen miles away, is the view from outside our industrial park suite (below).

You'd have to drive for hours to get a taste of clear air.

I’d joke about it but there has been significant loss of homes, and loss of life also. Feelin’ a little queasy here, if I do much physical work in this stuff. It’s hard to imagine what the firefighters are going through. It’s one thing to risk life and limb, working like a mule in high heat and rough terrain, and something else to do all that with no possibility of getting a breath of fresh air.

Here’s a recent overhead view.

  1. I know someone that lives across the street from the Kibbie Dome. A picture from their balcony this morning shows no evidence of such – you can barely see the power poles on the south side of the road.

quad bypass, five stents. this stuff makes walking on the flat difficult. normally my little “route” every day includes a saunter over to town, and then up the steeper slopes on the streets, or a path behind the park that goes to the top of the hills in town.

no way can i even attempt the steep stuff. an immediate tightness in the chest reminiscent of a cardiac event, greets any such attempt. walking over to downtown, on dead flat terrain, to share a cup of coffee w/ the afternoon crew brings on shortness of breath, and a tight chest, and a light head.

not to be taken lightly, nor ignored.

this smoke is the shits. the other night, driving back down from the foothills around town, the smoke just blotted out the sun. it is uncomfortable, and dangerous, and not merely inconvenient.

and yes, you can smell and taste the difference between “grass” and “wood.”
