Times are changing

Winning:

The idea that guns provide protection appears to be quickly gaining currency among American blacks. In December, 54 percent of blacks polled by Pew said they believed guns were more likely to protect people than to put their safety at risk. That figure was up from 29 percent two years earlier. For whites, 62 percent said guns protect people, up from 54 percent in 2012.

Those are huge changes in a relatively short time.

It may seem odd to my readers that only about 60% of people think “guns protect people” (poor wording, but everyone should be able to extract the correct meaning from that). But if your only exposure to electricity was lighting bolts and electric chairs you might have a tough time believing someone extoling the virtues of electric lights, heat, and motors. That is essentially the case with people who have been living in “gun-free zones” for decades. The Heller and McDonald decisions, Shall Issue, and Constitutional Carry are having their effect in exposing the true nature of gun ownership. Or should I say exposing the true nature of the anti-gun people?

  1. This is good. It is worth remembering, and mentioning when the occasion arises, that MLK was a gun owner and NRA member; that the purpose of many gun control laws is the disarming of blacks; that defensive gun ownership helped make the Civil Rights struggles of the 1960s possible; and that Malcolm X explicitly called for blacks to arm themselves in order to be able to defend themselves.

    • On the purpose of gun control laws: sometimes this is pretty obvious. Consider the ban of “Saturday night specials”. To appreciate the racism driving that law, all you need to do is uncover the fact that “Saturday night specials” is a shortened version, there used to be a third word, beginning with N, after “night”. Look it up.

  3. The SAFE Act is still in effect in NY, although selective prosecution isn’t yet underway (I’d guess about 6 months before the elections as the time for a pogrom) and the ammo part has been delayed (I’d guess about 5 minutes after the polls close for a restart, with retroactive prosecutions). CO still has their new magazine limit. NJ is still as horrid as ever. CA hasn’t loosened up any laws.

So are we winning hearts and minds per the poll, but still losing territory via one-directional ratchets of legislation?

    • Legislation and the courts seem to always lag hearts and minds. I know of no exceptions to that.

  5. The Deacons Of Defense certainly knew that guns protected people
    You could look it up.
