Quote of the day—Scott Martelle

As for handguns, assault-style weapons, etc., let’s have a flat-out ban. Beyond the histrionics of the gun lobby, there is no defensible reason for such weapons to be a part of our culture. They exist for one purpose: to kill.

You say gun control doesn’t work? Fine. Let’s ban guns altogether.
[H/T to Sebastian.

Don’t ever let anyone tell you no one wants to take your guns. This is from the Los Angles Times’ Opinion Staff.

He dismisses the specific enumerated right to keep and bear arms with:

One can hope that the court will someday go further than its recognition that the 2nd Amendment is not an absolute right and determine that rampant gun ownership is a public safety threat. And that Congress will push legislation that recognizes that the heavy societal costs of gun ownership outweigh any 2nd Amendment pretense to the right to own guns.

He dismisses self-defense with:

Impossible to measure because of a lack of trustworthy data.

This is even though his cited source, Paul Barrett, says the lower limit on estimated defensive gun use in the U.S. is about 100,000/year which exceeds the murders by a factor of ten.

It is apparently beyond his ability to accept the realities of the Supreme Court ruling that firearm in common use, and handguns in particular are protected. This is in the ruling he linked to! Then after realizing numbers and simple arithmetic are apparently beyond his grasp we could suggest he look to the “success” of banning things which have far less benefit and probably more harm, such as recreational drugs. How did the prohibition of alcohol work out? And the continuing ban of hardcore recreational drugs? Maybe he would like to extend the bans of those things harmful to other things such as tobacco? How does he think that would turn out? We already have a large black market in cigarettes because of the high taxes on them.

But we shouldn’t bother speculating. He obviously has crap for brains and is incapable of extrapolating past the end of his nose.—Joe]

  1. I’m beyond tired of these cretins. Despite living in California, the writer should have at least a inkling of the concept of rights and the scorned, mocked and looked down upon, Constitution. But, he doesn’t.

    Two words.

    Molon Labe.

    Jeff B.

  2. And then Martelle will turn around and whine about why gun nuts are so untrusting, unwilling to comprimise, and paranoid.

Course the title says it all. If challenges to the effectiveness of gun control will be answered with even more gun control.

  3. The Bill of Rights is now seen as a “pretense”, i.e. a ruse, a trick, a scam, an instrument of evil.

As I’ve been saying; once you begin serving the Dark Side (losing objectivity due to an inapproproate reaction to emotions) it will make a fool and a mockery out of you.

  4. To which my response is the same: I will see you at the front of the door-kicking stack, Scott.

Oh. What is that? You are too much of a coward to get your hands dirty? Then you are irrelevant, pissant.

  5. OK, just for the sake of argument, let’s stipulate that the only purpose of “assault weapons” (however you happen to define it) is to kill. Hmmm… Well, some things need killing, such as homicidal home invaders or rabid coyotes. So what’s the problem with having a tool that is designed to take care of that sort of problem? Or are you saying that collateral damage is OK? And besides, in the right cartridge, with the right tags and licenses, killing is totally legal right now, so again, what’s yer point?

    • If the notion that guns are ONLY for killing means they should be banned, then why allow government employees to have them? Because you support killing, so long as the “right people” are doing the killing, and the dying?

Bug spray is designed with only one purpose; to kill. Mouse traps too. Antibiotics. Abortion clinics– “If it could save the life of only one child”, right? And of course all militaries.

The crime and safety rationalizations for banning guns are all totally insane of course, and easily refuted. It’s all just fluff, the ruse, the smoke and mirrors, so what’s it hiding? Class? Anyone? Anyone?

It’s hiding the religion of Authoritarianism, the followers of which long for the Salvation that they believe can come from having an Ultimate Earthly Authority with absolute power over Mankind– a Final Apocalypse, after which the Earth will be made clean, all evil will be vanquished, and a few hundred million survivors will live happily ever after, with poet kings and no industry in a serene, pastoral paradise. This makes you (and the NRA, the teaparty, et al) the Antichrist. The infidels (all capitalists, especially paternal, white, Judeo/Christian Americans) are the only thing standing in the way, and so it is imperative that you be swept aside one way or another.
