Quote of the day—New York Times

One way to discourage the gun culture is to remove the guns from the hands and shoulders of people who are not in the law enforcement business.

The Gun Culture
[“Discourage” the gun culture?

I don’t think “discouragement” would be the response. The New York Times was, and still is, quite out of touch with reality.—Joe]

  1. It would appear that people seem to have been discouraged with the NYT over the years based on their decreasing circulation numbers.

  2. I think it would work extremely well.

“Gee I’ve been an avid hunter, outdoorsman for 50 years. But I guess I’ll just go turn in my guns now and take up lawn bowling. No big deal.”

“Gee, I live in an extremely crime-ridden area of town. But I can’t have a gun anymore. That’s okay – hey, let’s go get some ice cream!”

What were these guys smoking? As if the “gun culture” is some sort of insipid cultural meme that will just quickly run its course with the proper guidance.

    • Remember that the owner of the NYT is one of the very few people in New York City granted a carry permit. As Franciso D’Anconia said, “the aristocracy of pull”.

  3. “One way to discourage the religious culture is to remove the bibles from the hands and houses of people who are not in the morality enforcement business.”
Yeah, let’s just do that, see how it works out.

    • Careful what you suggest. There are those who would be more than happy to see such a thing.

      • Oh, I know there are. But there are also a bunch of people that are not particular pro-gun that ARE pro-1st amendment, and would see the parallels. Get to a person where they are, not where you wish they were.

  4. First, law enforcement isn’t supposed to be a business, it’s supposed to be a service;

second, I’ll turn it over to Robert Peel:

The police are the public and the public are the police; the police being only members of the public who are paid to give full time attention to duties which are incumbent on every citizen in the interests of community welfare and existence.

  5. “One way to discourage the gun culture is to remove the guns from the hands and shoulders of people who are not in the law enforcement business.”

Translation; “We completely reject everything this country ever stood for. Specifically; we reject the principles of liberty, and we favor a good old fashioned authoritarian system.”

  6. I never hear liberals differentiate between the gun cultures. They see it as one monolithic thing. I can quickly list 5 gun cultures, and we could probably add more and subdivide fractally ad infinitum. Of course there’s lots of overlap and we could argue about definitions, but my point is the laws purport to control the criminal gun culture but they throw the law abiding in with the scoundrels.
