Quote of the day—Philip Luty

More importantly, at least as far as I was concerned, it succeeded in giving the British anti-gun lobby something to think about, which was the whole motivation behind the project in the first place. The irony of the whole story though is this: it was those responsible for the hand-gun ban whom I have to thank for ‘Expedient Homemade Firearms’. If it were not for the anti-gun lobby, neither the book or this web site would exist!

At least in my case I haven’t been put in prison (yet). Luty was denied parole because, “Mr.Luty continues to maintain very strong views about UK gun laws to which he is opposed. Report writers identify considerable apprehension over his lack of insight and concern over the wider implications of his offences and his continuing views over gun ownership and use.”

Imagine being held in prison because you refused to agree that blacks should be slaves or that only licensed journalists are entitled to have free speech.—Joe]

  1. Indeed. But remember that the UK does not have a constitution, so any notion of free speech is entirely at the whim of of the government. Similarly, with changes in detail, in much or all of the rest of Europe. For example, Holland — which seems to have a constitution but by its own text forbids the courts from enforcing it.

  2. I read once that the Soviet constitution and the Weimar constitution both had essentially the same protections as the US constitution, except each protection clause had the key words “except so far as the interests of justice require” prefacing the words of right. This of course leaves the way open for the government to infringe at will, for as William Pitt the Younger said, “Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom. It is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves.”
Not part of the creed of any American.

    • I think we’re well past the infringement stage and into the willful, gross violation phase.

  3. Another example is in the U.N. “Universal declaration of Human Rights”. Article 29 includes the following:

    (2) In the exercise of his rights and freedoms, everyone shall be subject only to such limitations as are determined by law solely for the purpose of securing due recognition and respect for the rights and freedoms of others and of meeting the just requirements of morality, public order and the general welfare in a democratic society.
    (3) These rights and freedoms may in no case be exercised contrary to the purposes and principles of the United Nations.
    Now there’s a Mack truck sized loophole…

  4. Did you see the story that Lindsay Grahamnesty said basically the same thing on bloggers and 1A?

  5. Yes. Clearly he doesn’t have a clue about the Constitution, or about liberty. Time to get rid of him and elect someone who does understand.
