Quote of the day—Rich Lowry

Gun control always founders on the paradox that it is possible to write new laws for the law-abiding but difficult or impossible to reach criminals who don’t care about laws.

Lowry: The great gun control fizzle
[Sincere gun control advocates are very shallow thinkers. They think of the good that might come of the laws but not of, or dismiss, the harm it will certainly will cause. “If it saves just one life” is based upon this shallow thinking.

When the torrents of emotional pain from the latest tragedy involving a firearm have receded from all but the lowest parts of the flood plain reason and facts reappear and clear thinking makes it’s appearance again.

It should be very telling the gun control advocates are most effective when emotions run deep and run aground when the tears have started to dry.—Joe]

  1. “… facts reappear and clear thinking makes it’s appearance again.”

This is dangerous thought, Joe. It’s not going away this time, because the would-be usurpers of the Constitution have decided two things: first, that they are close enough to their goal of killing off those civil rights that they find bothersome, to keep up the drumfire against the 2A, and second, if they keep up the drumfire, the uneducated masses will actually get used to anti-gun thinking and expression in place of the gun freedoms we have fought for.

This is all about habituation, pure and simple. The Left is trying very hard to grease the skids for the UN Small Arms Treaty, and to do that, they need to keep harping on the same tired old mantras until the Big Lies become habituated in the idiotarian masses.

The NRA says that the President will sign the Treaty this June. We could make that painful for him by preparing to charge him with Treason if he does, but something tells me that the NRA is in a back-pedalling mood, and won’t expend resources for that sort of fight.

  2. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again:
The philosophy of “gun control” revolves around two primary assumptions:
    a) That “average”, good, law-abiding people can’t be trusted to obey laws (therefore, they must be disarmed for their own safety); and
    b) That criminals and the mentally ill can (so “Just One More Law” will cure all problems).
“Gun control” fails in practice because its primary assumptions are completely and utterly ridiculous.

  3. “The NRA says that the President will sign the Treaty this June. We could make that painful for him by preparing to charge him with Treason if he does, but something tells me that the NRA is in a back-pedalling mood, and won’t expend resources for that sort of fight.”

Rivrdog, your comment puzzles me. The NRA has no power to “charge” Obama with “Treason” in any formal sense. Any formal action against the President for such a (essentially meaningless act since the treaty won’t be ratified) is lodged in the House of Representatives and the House GOP hasn’t the fortitude to begin impeachment over a treaty. So why are you attacking the NRA for something it can’t do. Or do you think that the word “Treason” has emotional power to overcome the stupid sheep behavior of the American electorate? It does not. In today’s media environment, if the NRA started using rhetoric of “Treason”, it would only further marginalize its message to our detriment. Again, not something it makes sense to attack the NRA over.
