CA gun laws violate Sikh religion?

Interesting slant. Basically, the guy claims that the Sikh religion require him to be able to defend himself and his family against criminal attack and injustice, and the CA assault weapon and standard capacity magazine ban violates that religious requirement.

Gun law vs exercise of religion

That is an interesting twist – could be a good thing to follow.

(There is a reason one of my characters in The Stars Came Back is a Sikh.)

  1. Sikh’s and Ghurkas….two groups of some of the nicest folks you’ll ever meet. As long as you don’t try anything terminally stupid like effing with them or threatening a loved one. Seriously. There are easier and less painful ways to commit suicide, folks.

  2. We did have a Bill of Rights, and the requirement for an Oath thereto, for some very good reasons.

  3. Gotta love diversity! And best of all, he’s likely a non-European person of color and not a superstitious inbred mouthbreathing bitter clinging just-give-them-a-chance-and-they’ll-do-the-things-the-muslims-do-in-spite-of-having-had-the-chance-decades-ago Christian, because if he was a Christian they can call him names and ignore his argument.

    • If he’s saying something they don’t like, they’ll call him names and ignore him. Nothing else matters. You know what they did to Condi Rice and Clarence Thomas.

  5. You might not find every Mormon in agreement over this one, but the Book of Mormon makes pretty clear that the faithful are expected to defend against wickedness, and to defend their family, “even unto bloodshed”. It doesn’t say “…and thou shalt maintain an AR-15 in thy possession for this purpose”, but I have little chance of my defense shedding anyone’s blood but my own if I’m heavily outgunned.

    • As in all things, there is disagreement amongst Jews on this point, but in the Babylonian Talmud it is said that the Torah teaches us that “[i]f a man comes to kill you, rise early and kill him first.”

Or, as that noted theologian Malcolm Reynolds put it, “Someone ever tries to kill you, you try to kill ’em right back!”
