Considering that Baggett struck with a direct hit to the head, a .22 might have been able to accomplish the same thing, so .22lr are out, too.
I think that Leftists, in their zeal to eliminate all NG hazards from life have established a rule that misuse dictates whether the “thing” is controlled or not, with the exception of things they are personally familiar with, such as automobiles (at least until mass transit is large enough to tax cars into a class for party apparatchiks only) and drugs, with the exception of Tobacco and Alcohol, both of which are capable of being used without rendering the person stoned (come to think of it, that is a significant distinction).
The commenter before me over on Arms and the Law noted that Baggett served in CBI. I had a neighbor who was a transport pilot in the CBI theater and he flew the hump delivering supplies to China. He had a picture of himself with I can’t remember, Mao or Chou-en-Lai, and told a story of how at one dinner where the pilots were guests of Mao’s army, his friend turned to him and said with astonishment, “This man thinks he’s going to take over China!” This man was Chou himself. Mickey always wore an old Navy blue ball cap with some WW2 airforce insignia on it. When I found he had flown the hump, I thanked him and shook his hand. He said with embarassment, “Thanks, I needed that.”
