Quote of the day—H. L. Mencken

Whenever ‘A’ attempts by law to impose his moral standards upon ‘B’, ‘A’ is most likely a scoundrel.

H. L. Mencken
[I believe this to be true with both social and economic “moral standards”. Hence I hold nearly all strong Democrats and Republicans in low regard.—Joe]

  1. The concept of human rights may be considered a moral standard. I believe that it most certainly is.
    Thou shall not murder.
Thou shall not bear false witness.
    Thou shall not steal.

These are moral standards, and they’re not always embraced by everyone, or they have not been embraced by all cultures. It could be argued then, that any and all law, and most especially the best law, is an attempt to impose moral standards by force. So we have something of a conundrum, in that there is no universal agreement on the definition of human rights.

The answer to that, I believe, is fairly simple; An asserted “right” is not a right if it places demands on any other person other than to demand non interference.

Even then there are possible grey areas. Noise, and issues involving water and air come to mind.

As the late, great Douglas Adams put it; “To summarize the summary of the summary; people are a problem.”
