Random thought of the day

In conformance with the naming of fire, flood, and collision insurance the policy that pays out in the event of your death should be called “Death Insurance”.

“Life Insurance” is what you should call your carry handgun.

Update: I woke up at 3:30 the next morning realizing it probably should “Life Assurance”. Then I found the comment from Publius who suggested “life ensurance”. But I can’t find a definition for “ensurance”. [shrug]

  1. It was supposed to be the noun form of “ensure” and an insure-vs-ensure usage thing. But after reading your update I looked it up myself and it looks like there is in fact no such thing. Assurance is about the closest actual, currently existing English word that seems to exist. Bummer–it sounds like it should be a word, anyway…

  3. Logically, I would agree with you, but there’s an emotional aspect as well. How much more difficult would it be to sell “Death Insurance” than it would be to sell “Life Insurance”? It would be nice if humans were completely logical, but in addition to having a human brain, we also have these “monkey” and “lizard” brains to deal with as well! And the monkey brain in us says “Death is evil! Don’t get that Death Insurance!”

As one ad for Life Insurance said: It’s not for the dead, but for the living (ie, those who you leave behind when you die).

But I would certainly agree that carrying a gun is another type of “Life Insurance”. Unfortunately, it’s only for fighting goblins attempting to take away your life, and does nothing for preventing car accidents, or injuries, or sickness, or other ways we may die.
