Quote of the day—Erin M. Duggan

New York state has enacted rational gun laws for one very simple reason: to protect everyone visiting, living, or working in New York.

New York gun law triggers confusion, arrests for visitors
[“Rational”? What part of “… the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed” does Duggan have trouble understanding?

This is the same sort of person that would claim separate restaurants, drinking fountains and toilet facilities is “rational” too. I’m looking forward to the day when a Judge strikes those laws down and threatens the bigoted politicians, prosecuting attorneys, and police officers with arrest and jail time when they fail to obey in a timely manner.—Joe]

  1. Yeah…these visitors have been ‘protected’ within an inch of their lives.

Ms. Duggan, please proceed to your nearest NYFD facility immediately. With a set of the Jaws of Life, a bit of luck and a lot of work, they may just be able to pry your head out of your ass.

  2. Strange, I’m a gun owner in New York State and I feel harassed and threatened by those gun laws.
Here’s a fun one – after going through the headaches of obtaining a NYS “pistol permit” (which is mostly just
a permit to possess), hypothetically if I let a fellow shooter at my local club try out one of my handguns, we’re both
automatically felons unless he/she has a permit, too. You actually have to buy the gun and are forbidden to even handle it
unloaded until you are granted the permit.

  3. Aaron, you have my sympathy. That’s absolutely nuts.

I’m glad my own state (Missouri) has better laws.

“That the right of every citizen to keep and bear arms in defense of his home, person and property, or when lawfully summoned in aid of the civil power, shall not be questioned; but this shall not justify the wearing of concealed weapons.”-Missouri Constitution, Article I, Section 23

  4. I appreciate the sentiment, Caleb. It’s a lousy situation, but other than gun laws and the climate, I like NYS and NYC quite a bit.

  5. Somebody should go for a midnight walk through central park…and then sue the state for the “Protection” given by the “rational laws”.

  6. What part of “… the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed” does Duggan have trouble understanding?

I think it’s the “not” part.

Or, more likely, that his sense of (self)righteousness is so great that he just doesn’t care.

  7. I’m with Aaron on this. As a resident of New York state, I feel more threatened by the state’s gun laws than by any actual guns.

Personally I’m not a big fan of NYC. Granted, I’ve only been there twice and never for more than 48 hours. But upstate NY is very nice. It would be even more so if we didn’t have a small parcel of land in the bottom corner of the state dictating the laws for the rest of us.

  8. “…I feel harassed and threatened by those gun laws.”

Then the laws are are working exactly as planned.

  9. My brain was assuming this was a friendly quote for some reason, and I initially read it as “…for one very simple reason: to prevent anyone from visiting, living, or working in New York.”

‘Cuz that’s pretty much the effect their laws have had on me.

  10. Even if it were true that the State laws were rational/reasonable, that the spokesperson for the City DA does not realise that the laws being used in these cases are not State but City is both amusing and horrifying.
