The dark ages

It’s sort of a meme with Tamara leading the way followed by Say Uncle and Sebastian.

Tamara is correct as far as she goes but doesn’t get into how dark things were on the political side. For a more complete story read my “From the archives” tagged posts (ignore the post with the picture of the beautiful woman). Here are some samples:

I think — you know, we can’t be so fixated on our desire to preserve the rights of ordinary Americans to legitimately own handguns and rifles…

Bill Clinton
March 1, 1993

And we should — then every community in the country could then start doing major weapon sweeps and then destroying the weapons, not selling them.

Bill Clinton
October 1, 1993

Banning guns is an idea whose time has come.

U.S. Sen. Joseph Biden
November 18, 1993

Banning guns addresses a fundamental right of all Americans to feel safe.

U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein
November 18, 1993

We’re here to tell the NRA their nightmare is true!. We’re going to hammer guns on the anvil of relentless legislative strategy! We’re going to beat guns into submission!

U.S. Rep. Charles Schumer
November 30, 1993

If I could have gotten 51 votes in the Senate of the United States for an outright ban, picking up every one of them, Mr. and Mrs. America, turn them all in, I would have done it.

Diane Feinstein

If this is a topic of serious interest then you must read The Gun Rights War for the view from the trenches during those days and before. It was very clear that the dark ages were upon us. The lies and broken agreements of our opponents were ignored by the general public. The forces of evil merely cackled and thought us fools to believe the truth and principles would be sufficient to slow let alone stop or reverse them.

  1. …ignore the picture of the beautiful woman.

    Why?

(j/k, I can tell it’s the only one not on point. But she is kind of hard to ignore.)

I’m a little surprised to read the archived stuff. But not very.

Those were my teenage years, and I was vaguely aware of Mr. Koresh and the troubles at Waco, and the incident at Ruby Ridge. I was aware that the AWB was a big to-do, but I wasn’t aware of how much misinformation was involved in selling the AWB.

Since then, I’ve been a little shocked at how much misinformation passes as general knowledge among the cultural elites.

  2. Add me to the list. I didn’t take any real interest in firearms until about 2000, I vaguely remember seeing AWB stuff on TV but didn’t really understand what it was all about at the time since none of it seemed to directly affect me. I did know enough to hate Clinton, though, so I guess that’s something.

We definitely have it good now, but that doesn’t mean we can stop trying to make it better.

  3. Don’t forget we still have political prisoners incarcerated for technical gun violations. Having been neither convicted nor even accused of harming or even threatening any other person, they rot in prison as we speak. There are still others who’ve been put out of business or otherwise bankrupted simply trying to defend their enumerated rights. I wouldn’t say that’s “having it good” unless you mean it by comparison only. If by having it good we mean that our government is not actually killing innocent people at the moment, OK; we have it good, but there is a very long way to go before we can say we have it good without qualifiers.

  4. 2011; BATFE, with cooperation from FBI and the Obama Justice Department, purchase guns in large numbers and send them to Mexican Narco Gangs in an attempt to pin the blame on innocent U.S. gun owners as a means of convincing the public to go along with more restrictions.

We ain’t out of the woods yet, folks. Let’s not get too cocky. The forces of darkness are just going to have to get more and more sneaky is all. As Obama put it; “Under The Radar”. They certainly haven’t given up. I’m thinking that The Beast is as pissed off and desperate as ever, but now I’m pretending to have eyes into the heart of said Beast.

    Oh wait; I used to be one of them, for a short time. Here’s what I would have thought about the current situation;
“Stinking, ignorant, gun-loving, death-loving bastards! They and their interest groups’ve been manipulating the public for too long. What’s happened to our voice? We’ve been losing ground and there’s no excuse for it. Something has to be done about this, and I don’t care what, so long as it’s something, damn it! The sooner the better, and if it means a big, nasty trick that’ll put them off balance, taking then off guard, so much the better!”

You all know that’s how it goes, right? All it needs is an opening. All that holds it back is fear, the light of day, or a sense of weakness, and then it doesn’t change. It waits…

  5. I wonder how loud the sound of her frustration would be if someone sent this to Japete’s blog…..

You know…the whole, “We’re not trying to take anyone’s guns.” thing…..
