A drop in violent crime rates does NOT correlate with a drop in gun purchase rates. It DOES correlate with an increase in firearms purchase rates.

Violent crime rate either correlates highly with gun-purchase rate or it doesn’t.
And when it does it is almost always a negative correlation – that is, “more guns = less crime” when the correlation exists. Exceptions, if any, are extremely rare.

To borrow from one of my favourite shows, they’te out to breakfast, lunch, dinner and supper. They’re not “in” for a single meal.
To answer your not-quite question, firearm-related violent crime rates correlate negatively to firearm ownership rates.
