Comment to Quote of the day—Paul Helmke.
[The first few times I read this I had no clue what was being said. I suspected comment spam but there was no link to cheap prescription meds. I finally asked Barb, who was in bed with me at the time, “What is this supposed to mean?” She pointed out that “one” should be “won”. Oh! Now I get it.

I have a difficult time interpreting thing other than literally and I wasn’t able to make that translation on my own. Had it been “their” instead of “there” or “no” instead of “know” I would have been able to do it. I believe this was my first encounter with this particular homonym and since I didn’t attempt to read it out loud I was baffled.

Since BL is so much smarter than I am that I needed assistance in reading just a single sentence of this enlightened commenter I guess this proves them correct.—Joe]

  1. Once again I find myself wondering whether this is an anti being honest about his feelings and showing his true illiteracy, or whether it’s someone doing a parody trying to make the antis look as ignorant as possible. Without more information it is often impossible to tell.

Looking at the broader point; evil often gets the better of us because so many people are unable to believe that anyone could be that stupid, that brazen, or that downright sinister.

  2. I’m stupid like you, Joe! I couldn’t get the meaning, until I read several comments myself. Of course, being a mathematician, I have a certain bias to read “one” as a number, rather than as the past tense form of “won”.

  3. Oh, c’mon, Joe! I think you’re just being ironically self-deprecatingly subtle, there. I know of a few officially-DXed Auties, some of whom don’t speak, who would have understood what was attempted to be said there. Of course they’re all about a third of our age, or so, and grew up with Bad Texting. They would mock that too, but less subtly.

  4. OK so… since we’re talking about words and all… I’m strongly considering appending “violent” before any use of the political term “left.” As in “yet another missive from the violent left.”

Think this will become common use? I’m hoping so.
