Comment to What do American gun nuts think will happen if the government takes the guns away?
[I think the more correct answer to the question is that there would soon be a new government in town.
But getting back to Melissa Me’s answer. I think I’m okay with her position. Religion is protected under the First Amendment. So that means she thinks the specific enumerated right to keep and bear gun is doubly protected by the Bill of Rights. I think I can live with that regardless of what her personal opinion of me is.—Joe]

Some people seem to believe we live in some post historical bubble that is somehow immune to all the bad stuff that happens routinely in other parts of the world. Just because we live in America doesn’t automatically mean that things can’t happen here. The most rabid members of the gun control movement would ban all firearms if they could. The thing I would say towards people on that end of the spectrum is this. You want to grant the government monopoly of force. Really? The same government that allowed slavery to exist for several decades? The same government that allowed women and especially minorities to be second class citizens until well in to the twentieth century? The same government that rounded up japanese-americans and put them in camps during world war two based on the microscopic chance some of them might be saboteurs or spies? The same government that was behind the red scare and Mcarthyism of the fifties? Shall I bring up the horrific treatment of the Indians throughout the nineteenth century? You may trust our government to be benevolent from now until the end of time but I don’t. Even if you completely trust any current administration with added powers, be it strict gun control, the patriot act, whatever, you aren’t just trusting them. You are trusting them and everyone that is elected in their place afterwards. It isn’t a deal I feel like making in exchange for the illusion of security.
Bad things happen, and believe it or not bad things happen in America. I love the country, but we don’t always live up to our ideals. You may think it can’t happen here, but in many forms it already has. As remote a possibility as it now seems, it might again. Gun owners don’t think they are Rambo. Or the second coming of Patrick Henry. We simply have the right to protect ourselves, and that is the long and the short of it.
Stock answer number one is that resistance would be futile.
Well, even if that were true it has no impact on the fact that citizens have the right to the tools that would enable them to try.

Funny stuff Lyle. As for the reply directed at the wacko and conspiracy theorist image of gun owners I cross posted here, it is still stuck in moderation. I guess maybe someone who doesn’t fit neatly in to that Burt Gummer caricatured image of gun owners wasn’t welcome. Or at least someone posting why a guy without a supply of foil hats could think a good rifle just might be needed someday. As for the various situations that get knocked around in the so called SHTF scenarios, I’d say this. No matter how low probability any of the hypothetical bad scenarios might be, the chances are still greater than zero.
On the plus side, it seems I may have my first personal experience with reasoned discourse.
Probably the only thing that awful, old, horse-faced leftist Lyndon Johnson ever said that was true and useful was his comment about passing laws, and I have to paraphrase, “don’t look at the law and think what your allies could do with it, look at the law and think what your enemies could do with it.” As much as it grieves me to say so, those are words for any legislator to live by.
