The fallacy of magazine capacity limitations

This is my response to the Brady Campaign saying, “In Tucson, the shooter fired 32 bullets in only 16 seconds.” I shoot 35 rounds in less than 16 seconds and clear a malfunction with 10 rounds magazines:

What they propose is at best a minor hindrance to criminals. But it is potentially lethal to people attempting to use a gun for legitimate self-defense.

  1. Joe, You may think you’re an old guy that was tired, but you can shoot. Splits that average, what about 0.20? I’d say your better than most.

  2. “What they propose is at best a minor hindrance to criminals. But it is potentially lethal to people attempting to use a gun for legitimate self-defense.”

And given that their life-blood metric is “Gun Death” minimal hindrance of violent criminals, and life-threatening hindrance of the lawful is so much in their favor they are in strong ethical conflict.

  3. Ken,

I can do better when the target is closer and I’m a littler fresher. My average splits should be about 0.15 with some in the 0.11 to 0.12 range.

  4. Not everyone is a Jerry Miculek, but Jerry Miculek is: He can do this with a revolver.

  5. Joe Have you seen Travis Tomasie reloading? Just another example of determination and skill.

  6. anon,

Yup. Miculek can out shoot me, on my best day, with a revolver and probably with one hand tied behind his back. This is my point. It’s the skill and the intent, not the equipment, that makes the difference. I specifically wanted to show that some old guy on an off day can do something that puts the Brady Campaign supporters into PSH condition brown. And what are they going to do about it? Ban my trigger finger?

    Lumpy,

Yes. And I’ve seen him shoot in person at a couple different matches.

  7. This is all assuming that the criminals obey the restrictions.

If you start down the road to making crime physically impossible, where do you end?

  8. With a bunch of quadruple amputees in wheelchairs being spoonfed by other quadruple amputees, if you take that to its logical end point.

  9. Damn. ‘Bout the only thing that showed me is my happy ass needs to practice some more!

In addition to the engineer in me understanding that there is simply no rational reason to choose “10” as the number of rounds a magazine is legally permitted to have, I also have to point out just how simple magazines are – just like gun bans will not stop backyard mechanics, magazine bans will not stop… well… anyone. Metal boxes and springs are not exactly difficult to make, by any stretch of the imagination.
