North Central Idaho Appleseed Rifle Marksman Clinic

Via email:

The Lewiston Pistol Club will host an Appleseed Rifle Marksman Clinic at the Bernie Petersen Memorial Range on May 14-15, 2011.  The entire range will be reserved from 8 – 5 on Saturday and Sunday.

The Appleseed Clinic focuses on the basics of good marksmanship – sight alignment, sight picture, breath control, trigger control and follow through.  Interspersed with the shooting, the Clinic leaders deliver an oral history of April 19th, 1775 – the day the shot heard around the world was fired on the Lexington green.

The Appleseed Clinic is an excellent introduction to rifles for youth and beginners.  But even old hands have trouble passing the graduation exam – the Army Qualification Test.  The final target is the size of a postage stamp at 25 meters.  Think that’s an easy shot?  Come show us how it’s done!

  1. Thank you for posting that Joe.

APPLESEED > a fantastic program indeed. We will be hosting our fourth Appleseed Shoot on our private range here in north western Nevada in May.

The program not only instructs shooters (new and experienced) rifle marksmanship, but American history also. The rapid growth of this program is nothing short of astounding.

  2. I was hanging out with my daughter in the sheep barn at the county fair last Fall, when I spotted an Appleseed T-shirt on one of her classmates. When I asked the girl about Appleseed, her eyes lit up all of a sudden and she said something like; “Oh, yeah! It’s AWESOME!”

  3. The Army qualification standard is not a postage stamp at 25 meters. Given the cost of today’s postage, that would simply be too cost prohibitive.
I assume they are talking about the qual. standard for the M16/M4, which is actually a bit more diverse:
2ea targets, human sillouhette sized, at each of the following ranges:
    300m
    275m
    250m
    200m
    175m
    150m
    100m
    50m
Fired from the prone, unsupported position.
Then, fired from the standing, supported position (in a foxhole with sandbag rest)
    3ea targets, at the following:
    300m
    275m
    250m
    200m
and 2ea targets at the following:
    175m
    150m
    100m
    50m

Targets have exposure times (IIRC) of seven seconds. Iron sights are used. Scoring is done by computer registered hit. 36-40 is expert, 28-36 is sharpshooter, 22-27 is marksman, and below 22 is a do it again, after you confirm your zero, and get some coaching from someone who knows how to use the boomstick.
