Quote of the day—Senator Eric Adams

Gun violence is all too prevalent in our society. It is a plague, and we must dedicate ourselves to its eradication. We must use both education and legislation to combat the deadly consequences of weapon-related crimes.

The shooting that takes in Arizona, in Brooklyn, or no matter what city or state … We have become a society that has embraced a gun culture. Enough is enough. We want our country back; we want our cities back; we want our schools back; we want our homes back; we want to, once again, return to a society where gun violence and innocent people being shot, maimed, or killed are not part of the daily tabloids.

There are no First Amendment Rights in your home.

New York State Senator Eric Adams
January 2011
Brooklyn Senator Launches Gun Control Campaign

[The first part of the quote above is from the linked article. The last sentence is from the associated YouTube video which I have embedded above.

I’m pretty sure he meant Fourth Amendment when he said First Amendment. But even if it was a slip of the tongue rather than ignorance for a lawmaker to do that is pretty disturbing.

Combining his stated goal of eradication of “gun violence” and hatred of a culture that exercises our specific enumerated right to keep and bear arms with his carelessness and/or ignorance of the Bill of Rights I just have to ask, “What would he think of those that attempt to ignore the 13th Amendment instead of the Second?”—Joe]

  1. When he points the gun at himself, that is the first clue he’s not worth listening to. Your ending quote is the icing on the cake.

But I think it’s time for the substitution game!

Jews all too prevalent in our society. It is a plague, and we must dedicate ourselves to its eradication. We must use both education and legislation to combat the deadly consequences of the Jewish people.

The Blacks in Arizona, in Brooklyn, or no matter what city or state … We have become a society that has embraced a Blacks culture. Enough is enough. We want our country back; we want our cities back; we want our schools back; we want our homes back; we want to, once again, return to a society where Blacks are not part of the daily tabloids.

I initially used Jews, but felt the irony was better this way.

  2. I think it’s admirable that an elected leader would try to educate parents to help keep their inner-city children away from guns and drugs.

  3. Joe,

Well, I watched the video twice and I think it’s kind of cool that he’s empowering parents to be responsible for their kids. If more parents took an interest in what their kids do, there would be fewer gangbangers. Some parents just don’t care. Other city parents are working so many jobs (in an attempt to keep a roof over their head in a high-cost city) that they don’t have time to interact with their kids a lot. He’s basically “cutting to the chase” when he suggests room and backpack inspections.

I originally thought he said “First Amendment” because he was talking about the Constitution in a general way but I see what you mean at the end. He really meant Fourth Amendment when it comes to search and seizure.

Oh well. He’s trying. That’s a lot better than a lot of legislators do.

  4. He’s “trying” in a way that is dangerous, ill-informed and muddle-headed, ubu; he’s “trying” in a way that implies there is no such thing as legitimate gun ownership. Of course, his state’s constitution does not include the right to keep an bear arms; until McDonald, he could ignore that inherent human right with impunity.

And one has to wonder, does he have Official Permission to own that revolver he handles so ignorantly? And how are we to be sure that’s merely oregano and confectioner’s sugar? –Or is this an elected “leader” flaunting his privileges?

Swap ten of him for one Otis McDonald and society would come out ahead on the deal.

  5. “He’s trying.”

This is exactly how we ended up on the road to hell. Never mind that “he’s trying” to convince people of something that is foolish and dangerous, that will only end up causing death and destruction to the good people of society. “He’s trying.”

When JFK, Jr. was off the coast of New England in his high performance aircraft with his wife and sister-in-law, “he was trying” to figure out how to fly the plane to safety, but somehow chose to ignore everything he’d been taught in his recent instrument training. He chose to fly the plane based on how he felt and not on what facts, experience and history proved to be the right way to fly the plane. The NTSB report showed that he did what is known as the classic death spiral of a pilot who abandoned sound facts, instruction and judgment.

I have grown more than sick and tired of seeing all kinds of destruction in my country, be it in education, medical care, employment, whatever, all based on the idea that whatever is tried is okay because of good intentions. Remember the war on poverty? By subsidizing it, we’ve made it worse. But we did it with the best of intentions. The country is now bankrupt, and all that is left is for the collapse to actually happen. When those of us who survive are left to explain why the country collapsed into a primitive hell-hole, we are going to be saying the following phrase over, and over: “They thought that what they were doing would make things better, but they ignored all the lessons of history.”

  6. But, dont’ch’a see, Roberta, he made an effort, and that is all that matters. It does not matter if he flagrantly violated the standard safety rules for firearms, and thus presented a horrible model for his supposed target audience to follow. It does not matter if he confuses his Amendments with reckless abandon, demonstrating a marked ignorance on the topic matter in general. It does not matter that he shows not only a lack of respect for those Amendments, but also a specific disrespect for the same. All that matter is he tried, and he therefore deserves his A for Effort!

    [/snark]

And that sentiment, ladies and gentlepeople, is exactly one of the reasons that our country, as a whole (not just the education system, though that is one of the emore obvious examples), is in the condition it is in – reality does not care if you tried, reality only cares if you were successful, and this guy failed on just about every objective metric aside from “Showed up.”

    Good job, that.

  7. I like the substitution game too!

Anti-constitutional Public Servants are all too prevalent in our society. It is a plague, and we must dedicate ourselves to its eradication. We must use both education and legislation to combat the deadly consequences of Anti-constitutional Public Servants.

Anti-constitutional Public Servants in Arizona, in Brooklyn, or no matter what city or state … We have become a society that has embraced Anti-constitutional Public Servants. Enough is enough. We want our country back; we want our cities back; we want our schools back; we want our homes back; we want to, once again, return to a society where Anti-constitutional Public Servants are not part of the daily tabloids.

So this post will be somewhat way OT…

    Ah ha….The substitution game!

The female orgasm is all too prevalent in our society. It is a plague, and we must dedicate ourselves to its eradication. We must use both education and legislation to combat the deadly consequences of the female orgasm.

The female orgasm in Arizona, in Brooklyn, or no matter what city or state … We have become a society that has embraced the female orgasm culture. Enough is enough. We want our country back; we want our cities back; we want our schools back; we want our homes back; we want to, once again, return to a society where the female orgasm is not part of the daily tabloids.

Ladies I kid you… I for one do support the female orgasm

  8. So, we’ve got one more idiot who can’t distinguish between ‘thug culture’ and ‘gun culture’. The real tragedy/question is: how does a mental midget like this become a Senator?

  9. I think he said “First” when he meant “Fourth.” Why, I don’t know. But I’m sure you gun bloggers won’t let it rest until he’s as much a laughing stock as Rep. McCarthy with her “shoulder thing that goes up” and her failure to define a “barrel shroud.”

That’s too bad because what he has to say is good stuff. Unlike what Roberta X said, he repeated over and over again that he was talking about “illegal guns.” Are you guys so self-obsessed that everyone who talks about guns has to mention you lawful gun owners along with whatever point they’re trying to make?

  10. let’s assume he did mean the fourth amendment, not the first. how does that make anything one whit better?!

  11. wow, so he’s only after “illegal” guns eh?

Good thing he is in New York where any gun not registered with the state is “illegal” and you have to have money or political connections to get a concealed carry permit. That must by why New York has such a low crime rate and is a model of success for the rest of the states. I hear Vermont is seriously considering asking New York to annex it so they can have all the benefits of public safety that New Yorkers enjoy.

When the difference between “legal” and “illegal” is merely a bureaucrats permission slip then the law is unjust.

Should it be legal for me to kill someone if I had the appropriate permission slip?
Should it be legal for me to rape someone I wanted with the appropriate permission slip?

Clearly the violation of another persons life or body violates “natural law”. However the need to obtain a permission slip to simply own property? That is an unjust law that needs to be abolished. How else will the poor blacks defend themselves against the Klan?

A “permission slip” is just someone else trying to deny my right to own property.

  12. New York is also the home Sen. Chuck Schumer who thinks the three branches of government are “the House, the Senate and the President”.

  13. Democrats have declared a war on poverty, a war on hunger, a war on drugs, a war on homelessness, a war on obesity, and a war on climate change. How about giving up on one of the lost wars before picking another war to lose?

  14. “We want our country back; we want our cities back; we want our schools back; we want our homes back; we want to, once again, return to a society where gun violence and innocent people being shot, maimed, or killed are not part of the daily tabloids.”

What country or planet is he talking about here? I don’t recal a period in time when people weren’t killing people.

Did I miss the nirvana period?

  15. Mike, he has made himself a laughingstock with his ignorance of history, law and safety rules and his hatred of basic human rights. Much as you have done.

Don’t blame the messengers who merely point it out.

  16. I’m against ILLEGAL guns. We should have an NRA group. NRA Gun Owners Against Illegal Guns or Legal Gun Owners Against Illegal Guns. It could focus on the problem being the “illegal” theft and “ownership” by repeat criminals. Point out that legal gun ownership by good people is a good thing. It’s the illegal part that’s the problem.

  17. Dear sweet Vishnu on a velocipede, this man is an elected official? People voted for him?

    The Endarkenment continues apace.

  18. anon said, “The real tragedy/question is: how does a mental midget like this become a Senator?”
Tam said, “… this man is an elected official? People voted for him?”

It makes perfect sense to me. It was probably the only job he was qualified for.

  19. Do a little reading about him. This is the same man who drafted legislation to stop the NYPD from keeping a “Stop & Frisk” database of innocent people. If this post had been about that, everyone would have been praising him (though probably asking why he didn’t get rid of “Stop & Frisk” entirely).

  20. If I told the esteemed Congressman that rap music, the thug lifestyle, ‘boyz in da hood’ movies, “keepin’ it real” and suchlike were more responsible for the plight of inner city youth and that the change had to come in the form of delegitimizing those who popularize crime, hate, and drug use (Spike Lee, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, et cetera)… I wonder how fast he’d be on the draw in calling me names.

I wonder if I told the esteemed Congressman that he was absolutely right and that population subgroups with a history of violent crime and high incarceration rates should absolutely be banned from ever owning firearms… I wonder how quick on the draw he’d be in calling me names.

  21. Isn’t his message to parents to be more responsible for what goes on under their roof a good one? I thought all you individual rights folks liked that sort of thing.

Roberta you remind me of that old Billy Joel song, “Stiletto.” Do you know it?

  22. This is the same man who drafted legislation to stop the NYPD from keeping a “Stop & Frisk” database of innocent people. If this post had been about that, everyone would have been praising him (though probably asking why he didn’t get rid of “Stop & Frisk” entirely)

Yeah, well, you’re all about punishing innocent people for the mistakes of the guilty too, so you can kindly spare us your hypocritical self-righteous outrage.

  23. ubu52,

Do a little reading about him…

Did. Even a stopped clock is right twice a day. Heck, I agreed with George W. Bush on an issue or three, but that doesn’t mean I’d have voted for him for dogcatcher…

  24. If a musician was born after about 1923 or had his first hit after, say, 1941, I don’t even want to know about him, Mike — along with your attempt-to-be-clever little jabs. (Swing is about as modern as my musical taste gets, with very few exceptions. If you’ve got Raymond Scott and Joplin, what else do you need?) But hey, keep at it, you’ll work your way up to “catty” eventually. Maybe.

His message is deeply flawed. Plays right up to your love of kowtowing to Authority, though, so I see why you’re in luv. The man is an idiot. If nothing else, consider the lack of attention that lets a recorded video get released referring to the wrong amendment from the Bill Of Rights, not to mention the lack of good sense that has a supposedly firearm-trained individual pointing a real gun at his very own face.
