Quote of the day—Tamara K.

It’s just word salad; you’re not really missing anything. If you want a precis, just take your index finger and bounce it across your lips while making “Blub! Blub! Blub!” noises.

In email when asked by Say Uncle for a short version of what Brady Campaign Board Member Joan Peterson posted.
[Robb Allen had a pretty good synopsis too:

Yeah, ‘word salad’ is as good of a descriptor as any. I can’t make heads nor tails of what she’s trying to say. It’s almost like “My side is losing because people are using legal terms and saying mean things and then there’s … SQUIRREL!!!!”

I sort of wondered if there was alcohol or some other mind alternating drug involved. Other than the normal intoxicating effects of hoplophobia of course.—Joe]

  1. You got to add a “like” button. Some of these quotes, although serious, are fracking hilarious.

  2. Sure, it’s fun to laugh at Japete now. But wait until she is recess appointed to head ATF.

  3. She can’t believe she has not won the argument and millions are not following her. So she writes a post that makes my head hurt too.

I have been getting angry at the “Main Stream Media” and how they do a hit piece on legal gun owners, then go only to the “Brady Campaign” for comment. It makes me want to through something at my TV. Well no I love my TV, I would like to through my foam sandal at the Brady Campaign spokes person, Iraqi style.

Also the media almost never mention that the Brady Campaign is basically a shell company now.

  4. japete’s done a good job in trying to present her opinions in the face of the usual barrage of nitpicking and attacking and mocking on the part of you pro-gun folks.

Tam is like most of you. You go to great lengths to maintain a unified and single voice on your own blogs. Japete doesn’t do that, and I respect her for it.

  5. That story Japete linked too is just pitiful (the Arizona border killings). Those people should rot in hell. Unfortunately, whether the gun club wants to claim those people or not, they reflect a certain right wing ideology and left wingers and centrists will see them in that light. Your side really doesn’t want gun owners like this, and even less, you don’t want them showing up with all the gunnie couture.

I understood her post just fine. She never claimed to speak for all of “her side.” She posts her opinions, just like Joe and others do here.

  6. mikeb302000,

Tam is like most of you. You go to great lengths to maintain a unified and single voice on your own blogs…

You probably think that the reason my comments section isn’t flooded with dissenting viewpoints is because I’m going to “great lengths”, don’t you?

    That’s pretty funny.

FWIW, I’ve never deleted any comments because of viewpoints or language or anything like that. Unless you’re selling WoW gold or counterfeit Viagra out of a spam factory in Shanghai, you’re welcome to say whatever you want in my comment section.

  7. ubu52,

…whether the gun club wants to claim those people or not, they reflect a certain right wing ideology…

I get a kick out of the conflation of “gun club” and “right wing ideology”. So somebody in favor of 2nd Amendment rights is automagically joined at the hip to Glenn Beck and Pat Buchanan. I’m pro-choice, opposed to the War on the 4th Amen… ar, “drugs”, and in favor of marriage equality, but since I oppose having my 2nd Amendment rights infringed, I’m some neo-con who’s just like some camo-wearing vigilante yahoo.

Which rights automagically make somebody “Left Wing”? Free speech?

  8. Wow. Just…wow.

As for Japete, guys, let’s remember that Jared Loughner was obviously going whacko for over four years and people around him were either in denial or felt it was someone else’s problem. Japete is clearly having some kind of serious cognitive problem and we should all work together to get her the help she needs. It’s not that she hates guns and gun owners, she’s always been that way; but she’s no longer able to weave a coherent article based on it, and that’s reason for concern. Especially since she does still own guns. I’m sure Mike and Ubu will kick in….

    Right?

    Right…?

  9. As I said way back at the beginning, Joan is probably the single best thing that has happened to the gunblogger community in recent history, and arguably the pro-rights community as a whole (so long as you overlook the recent Supreme Court decisions and all that good stuff). Peter, Paul, and Joshie must go to bed every night with splitting headaches after seeing what a hamburger-like mess this woman has made of their work, aggrivated even further by her doing it In Their Name – after all, she is so proud, so very proud of her position on the Brady Campaign :). On the other hand, she gives us no shortage of priceless quotes from an official Brady representative that we would not be able to get anywhere else, and that give us such a good look into the kinds of minds that the Brady-ites want on their governing board.

Unfortunately, it kind of dampens the “we keep winning” spirit, because if she is amongst the best the Brady Bunch can field against us… well, no wonder we are winning!

japete’s done a good job in trying to present her opinions in the face of the usual barrage of nitpicking and attacking and mocking on the part of you pro-gun folks.

When those opinions are chock-a-block full of factual errors, logical inconsistencies, appeals to emotion, religion-like beliefs, and just plain gibberish, the only reasonable responses (aside from simply abandoning the person to his or her own private psychological hell) are nitpciking (Mike-speak for “correcting her glaring errors”), attacking (Mike-speak for “pointing out where her opinion makes no sense whatsoever”), and mocking (Mike-speak for “asking her to provide evidence to substantiate her baseless claims”)… or did you honestly expect us to lay back and allow our rights to be assailed in the most idiotic fashions just because the woman’s sister was murdered by someone who probably should not have had a firearm under the current set of laws?

You go to great lengths to maintain a unified and single voice on your own blogs.

Yes, because all pro-rights weblogs all sound exactly the same, there are never any disagreements, everyone gets along, commenters always support the original posts, and we are just full of rainbows and unicorn farts.

    Oh. Wait. Not so much.

Alternatively, we reign our comments sections with iron fists, and never allow so much as a glimmer of dissent to be expressed from within them.

Oh. Wait. No, that pretty much describes Joan and Baldr to a T. Whoops.

Japete doesn’t do that, and I respect her for it.

In other words, “Joan runs one of the very few other anti-rights weblogs out there, and she strictly controls and regulates her comments section, so we are free to spread our bigoted misinformation without having to worry about people questioning it or pointing out its errors, and I thank her for that.” Apparently, for Mike, honesty is overrated ;).

Unfortunately, whether the gun club wants to claim those people or not, they reflect a certain right wing ideology and left wingers and centrists will see them in that light.

*sneeze*bullshit*sneeze* But, hey, at least that flailing thrust at stereotyping answers the question of whether or not UBU had given up her discriminatory schtick… I had been wondering. I always love it when people focus laser-like on the supposed political leanings of violent, criminal individuals – but only when those leanings are in the other direction – and then not only attempt to paint all people of that leaning with the same violent, criminal tendencies, but also patently ignore the violent, criminal tendencies that people of their own leanings have expressed in the past. And, yes, the “left” has had its share of violent whackos who have gone out of their way to hurt/damage/kill/destroy people/property.

Let us make this as simple as we can: “crazy” is an apolitical, bipartisan affliction of the human condition in its whole, and any attempt to pigeonhole it into one side of the political spectrum or the other says far more about the person doing the pushing than the people being insulted.

I understood her post just fine.

    No great surprise there!

…but she’s no longer able to weave a coherent article based on it, and that’s reason for concern. Especially since she does still own guns.

And Roberta wins the internets for today! Given that Joan obviously has some pretty significant mental issues, not the least of which is still coping with her sister’s death, and given that she has admitted to still owning firearms, and given that Mike et al. are so very concerned with keeping firearms out of the hands of people with mental issues, one would think they would be holding an… intervention… for Joan any day now.

    *snerk*

  10. I’ll agree that her posts were becoming less and less coherent. When I started reading (and posting) over there, it seemed like each post was about 1-3 specific topics. Of course, not everything logically followed; she might highlight some tragic or scary story from the news then use that as evidence to push some unrelated gun control idea. But at least there was theoretically some sort of structure.

These days — and especially right after the whole AZ tragedy — things over there have been really disjointed. She was never able to effectively marshal evidence to support her thesis, but today it is like she can’t even come up with a topic sentence. DW and I actually noted this a few weeks ago.

I’ve suggested that she’s suffering from PTSD-like symptoms (obviously, as Sean D. Sorrentino pointed out, it can’t be full-on PTSD as she’s never actually personally experienced a terrifying circumstance that we know of); her apparent terror and rage, acknowledged impotence in the face of tragedy, and apparent flashbacks all suggest it. I’ve tried to calm things down over there by suggesting relatively “tame” and — I thought — sane ideas like starting a book club (she picks a book, we pick a book) but that hasn’t helped. I hope she has a strong real-world support network.

  11. “one would think they would be holding an… intervention… for Joan any day now.”

They can’t; all her friends and supporters are just as ignorant and reality-impaired as she is. MikeyB demonstrates that quite clearly.

  12. @ MIKEB: Tam is like most of you. You go to great lengths to maintain a unified and single voice on your own blogs. Japete doesn’t do that, and I respect her for it.

Are you fricking kidding me? Which blogs feature censorship in the comments section? Which blogs have no comments at all (look at the Brady Campaign press releases issued by Goddard and Helmke, for example — those aren’t blog posts, they’re just marginally edited press releases)? Which ones crosslink to the same discredited evidence? Which ones are all funded by the same source (Joyce)? Which ones all parrot identical talking points from the mothership?

If you actually read gun blogs you’ll find that there is a wide opinion on many subjects. For example, take the NRA. Some people hate NRA. Some people are ok with it. Some people strongly support the organization. How many anti-gun bloggers have any diversity of opinion about the Brady Campaign, MAIG, or the Joyce Foundation? Don’t bite the hand that feeds you…

  13. @ Everyone Else:

Quick, contact NRA and tell them that they need to change the crypto keys on our Secret NRA Decoder Rings. MikeB is close to cracking our telepathic Group Think Message Standardization codes.

  14. Joe, every time I’ve posted a comment here, to include this time, I have had, oh, at least half a snoot-full of ethyl hydroxide in me. I hope you agree that I have made more sense than does that woman.

I don’t think it’s ethanol that’s making her think like that.

  15. I read her to understand where their their Brady heads are at.. now mine hurts.

So my favorite reprise is her own lines because even sans context they are really telling.
The level of cognitive dysfunction is horrifying that an self said educator cannot
be anything resembling factual or analytical without bias. Tragic comedy works that way.

Here are few favorites in the discussion of fact vs farcical belief.

“Where is your evidence for such a statement?”
“Just stop saying it. Saying it does not make it true.”

“Yes, an open and honest debate is a good thing for the country. I hope we can have such a debate.”

Some day maybe but, not when “Rediciculous!” and “Nonsense” are the common response.

    Eck!

  16. It is nothing short of astonishing that mikeb cannot see that jpete’s utter ignorance of the facts on the topic she claims to be an expert on is simply hilarious.

  17. Judging from comments here, my original concern about fearing the stupid from japete would rub off seems true. Just look at mike and ubu. Definite signs of overexposure.

  18. I dunno, SayUncle, they were pretty stupid before. I think anti-rights stupid is like the proverbial moth and flame.

They are so alone and in such a minority they scour the internet for people like them, and all 5 of them have found places to hang out.

  19. I think this stupidity starts in the ability to think that the government giveth and taketh away. If you don’t believe that rights are absolute (which is why they are called rights and not privileges) you do not have a basis to argue anything. Since Joan/Japete believes the government “allows” us to have these rights, she can make an argument for anything. Of course, saying it, doesn’t make it true. That much is nonsense.

  20. Say, does anyone know of reputable articles on the incident she cites?
I found http://tucsoncitizen.com/dead/2009/06/02/double-homicide-raul-flores-jr-29-and-brisenia-flores-9/ , which is vague, and http://www.aolnews.com/2011/01/26/shawna-forde-trial-victims-mom-says-brisenia-flores-pleaded-fo/ ,also kinda vague.

I can’t find anything remotely trustworthy that backs up Japete’s version of the story. Citing a UK paper about an incident in Arizona suggests a lack of confidence in the details.
The wikipedia website says it was an attempt by some criminals to rob drug dealers, and also ties the story to Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik, who has no credibility.

  21. @Dustydog – To be honest, I have quit reading her. I decided I would take Tam’s advice. Nothing good can come of it and if all the pro-gun guys start to back away from her, slowly now, maybe, just maybe, she’ll realize that we were the only one’s reading her… and of course, Mike, Laci, and Jadegold, who will continue to read her mutterings.. giving her 3 hits a day.

  22. Tam,

I can buy a camo “Vote for Tancredo” hat, yet I can’t buy the same hat with “Vote for Pelosi.”

The official GOP webstore sells camo hats, yet the official Democrat one doesn’t.

Camo=Republican. The gun club needs to claim all those camo-wearing idiots because they are “your kind.”

I can’t account for you if you truly are what you say you are. How can you politically support a party that wants to do away with your gun rights?

  23. Its a hat that is the sole indication of belonging? We went from the Liberals “People don’t kill people, maps kill people” to now hats kill people?

Ubu, you still don’t have this “logic” thing down.

  24. Peter, Paul, and Joshie must go to bed every night with splitting headaches after seeing what a hamburger-like mess this woman has made of their work, aggrivated even further by her doing it In Their Name – after all, she is so proud, so very proud of her position on the Brady Campaign

To a degree, but remember they pick their board, not the other way around. I doubt they want too many people on their board that are deep thinkers. Deep thinkers tend to ask difficult questions and are generally pestering. I’m sure they all like Joan just fine.
