Quote of the day–Harry Emerson Fosdick

Liberty is always dangerous, but it is the safest thing we have.

Harry Emerson Fosdick
[I don’t think most people understand this. They see the little hazards of liberty and freedom like accidental gun shoot wounds and the occasional mass shootings and overlook the genocide enabled by prohibitions against the private ownership of firearms.—Joe]

  1. How could mass shootings of disarmed people in a restricted environment be a consequence of liberty?

  2. TJP,

They see the mass shootings a consequence of too much liberty. And a valid argument can be made for that–you never hear about mass shootings of inmates by other inmates in our prisons. The problem is they overlook the poor living conditions and the mass shootings of the inmates by the prison guards.

  3. From the moral standpoint, liberty is right and anything else is wrong, regardless of what the “smart” people think about possible outcomes. That’s what many people fail to understand.
