Not planned for Boomershoot any time soon

Via Mad Rocket Scientist I found some pictures of much more awesome fireballs than what we do at Boomershoot.

Although we have no plans for anything like that in the immediate future I really haven’t looked into it that much. There are certain regulatory hurdles that appear to be sufficiently high that it makes compliance unlikely in the near future.

We would need to use a different range and I suspect the entry fee would have to be prohibitively high too. All and all it just doesn’t seem like its going to happen any time soon no matter how cool it would be.

  1. Not to mention it would have to be some form of circuit completion to get it to go boom, rather than working off the impact of a bullet. My understanding is the explosives used to compress the core have to be electronically controlled, with very precise detonators, in order to get the desired effect. Though I suppose you may be able to use a gun type device with a more simple bullet-driven ignition system, but I don’t think all the centrifuges for making HEU will fit in the Taj Mahal

  3. How about just passing out a big batch of enriched uranium bullets in .308, and then designate a single target for repeated volley fire? Eventually you’d reach critical mass….

    I know that you work hard to avoid dusting your neighbor’s house down along the road – I guess we’d have to be watchful for excessive clouds of alphas or betas.

    I pretty sure that if you manage to light off a couple of these and convince people you have a couple of more ready to go, then the “regulatory hurdles” don’t apply to you.

  5. In the garage I still have the late ’70s Reader’s Digest article by a science grad student who researched and published an accurate dissertation detailing how to construct a nuclear bomb, which freaked the heck out of some federal agencies.

    Cuz if you’re going for to make a big boom, may as well make it a really, really big boom.
