This is the last of the Charlton Heston cartoons I have. I meant to post it yesterday but was in a hurry and grabbed the first one on my list.
I mostly give the artist a pass on this one too. It’s not exactly classy to criticize someone on their death but compared to some of the other crap that was thrown at him this is pretty mild.
Kinda odd. Heston was a huge activist for human rights, and I believe a devout Christian. Meanwhile God flooded the world, destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, rested plagues upon the Egyptians, ect ect. He’s got a lot of nerve pointing a finger at ‘Ol Chuck! ; ]
Perhaps the cartoonist is saying God isn’t so keen on human rights.
Well to play with that idea, in the old testament the Jews are the “Chosen Race” that are in favor by God, then come the New Testament the Jews (and any others) that converted to Christianity because the “Chosen Ones”, and I guess the Jews that stayed Jews became chopped liver.
So maybe you have a point there, Joe.
Heh, I don’t really have a dog in this race, but I do like their stories!
God will destroy whom he will destroy, for whatever reason he deems fit.
On the other hand, when the Philistines ruled over Israel, the Israelites were required to go to Philistia to get their plows sharpened, because they weren’t allowed to have weapons (in the days of the Judges, before the Kings); and when Haman tried to kill all the Jews, the king’s solution to that was to arm all the Jews, and let them have their way with anyone who tried to kill them.
I know of no place in the Bible where God forbids anyone from carrying weapons, and certainly there is no commandment “Thou shalt take the weapons from all people, except for police and soldiers, who because they are of Government, will never sin or oppress the people”. While there is the mention of “beating swords into plows”, this is usually in the context of one thousand years of peace.
In which case, Jeff Snyder’s statement (from “A Nation of Cowards”) takes effect: “While a peaceful society can very well be an unarmed society, it does not follow that an unarmed society will be peaceful.” (I think I slaughtered the statement, but I think I got the gist of it…)
Interesting that much of the Ten Commandments is embodied in our Bill of Rights, and that makes for a connection between Heston’s role as Moses and his position in the NRA.
I heard a wonderful quote related to this a couple of dozen years ago, and it’s kept me sane (-ish) and humble (-ish) when it comes to using God as a basis for my political views.
“You know you’ve created God in your own image when He hates all the same things you do.”
I wish more of my fellow believers understood and lived by that credo. It’d do WONDERS for our PR.
