The only thing a gun is good for is killing and maiming people and animals. It is especially bizarre that several people professing to be Christians are keen to get their hands on the means to kill and maim. Would Jesus have packed an assault rifle?

You should also consider that a lot of this weaponry stuff is not about rights or owning arms, but SELLING arms, and making money out of it. Always follow the money.

Second, it is spoken like a true communist. It’s the greedy capitalist that is responsible for everything they think of as evil in the world. It’s that unchallenged assumption–“Money is the root of all evil.”

I’d say the lust for someone else’s money is certainly a root of evil, and here we point directly to the leftist/Progressive movement. It’s their way of life. Those who decry the “consumerist” society are looking at the world upside down. Consuming alone never made anyone prosperous. It is “Producerism” only that leads to prosperity.
Anyway, this lust leads to the envy, hatred, and bigotry seen in the quote, which is the very foundation of modern “liberalism” (itself an upside down application of the term). Due to their hatred and their need to rationalize it, they see free markets as force or enslavement, and they see force as freedom or liberation.

1) “The LOVE of money is a root of evil.” This is the general version. Ayn Rand would probably concur. The Looters in Atlas Shrugged loved money apart from the activities which imparted value to money.
2) Christ knotted cords (He constructed a weapon! Oh my stars!) and (twice) cleared the temple of crooks. What he went through at the hands of Herod’s guards and Pilots scourging make waterboarding sound attractive. He was no wimp.
The Left is often in error as they claim Jesus as an activist (Render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God that which is God’s.)
Christians are often in error too, when they assume that Jesus would have been in favor of socialism, i.e. confiscation and redistribution under the threat of force. Charity is something else altogether, and should never be confused with robbery. The former is an act of compassion and a source of potential good. The latter is an act of hatred and a source of ruin, yet we are often expected to view them (charity and forced redistribution) as equal. Actually, some would have us believe that forced redistribution is both morally and functionally superior to charity.
Closer, but if you’re going biblical, it’s “The Love of money is the root of all evil”. Even if you got the gun grabbers to grasp the actual statement instead of their paraphrasing, you still won’t get them to understand that this statement doesn’t mean the love of money always leads to evil. It just means that all evil can be traced back to greed.
