How’s that working out for you?

As I have said many times before. It’s A Security Theater.

Here is proof:

A passenger on a Detroit-bound Northwest Airlines flight tried to detonate an explosive device that was strapped to his leg and later told investigators that he was trying to blow up the plane and had affiliations with al Qaeda, according to a senior U.S. official.

The passenger was identified by authorities as Abdul Mudallad, a 23-year-old Nigerian national, according to Rep. Peter King, a New York Republican who is the ranking member of the House Homeland Security Committee.

The device was technologically advanced and potentially devastating, Mr. King said. “This was not a firecracker,” he said.

And what is the response? As expected, more stuff that cannot possibly help but will further restrict our freedom and make air travel more of a hassle:

The Department of Homeland Security said in a statement that airline passengers should expect to see additional screening measures put in place on both domestic and international flights.

Update: After the shoe bomber we had to take off our shoes when going through security and the security experts told us that we should just be glad that he didn’t try to blow up the plane with a bomb hidden in his underwear. I think you should be able to extrapolate the “additional screening measures” we can soon expect to see without my assistance.

  1. Oh lovely. One nutjob and the US government gets all excited about killing the airline industry just a little faster.

  2. of course it would be improper to just increase inspection of muslims. Just as it was improper for the media to mention that this prick is muslim and claimed to be acting in As Qaeda’s stead.

Please, nobody try to convince me that any of those drones setting policy for us are on our side.

  3. We’re working against time and chance. Someone, somewhere, will always be able to permeate security at its weakest point. When that point is addressed, the next weakest will be one that’s exploited. If enough people continue attempting it, it’s pretty much a mathematical certainty that someone will eventually succeed.

I don’t hold this against the TSA–their job is impossible. However, mitigation is a much more effective and a lot less costly. The problem is that the relatively recent advances in communication put humans in a state of hyper-vigilance with which they cannot cope; where a single incident amplifies the perception of risk because it’s instantly known by millions of people, making it seem personal where the actual likelihood is extremely small.

I reserve the right to question every expenditure of my tax dollars for the purpose of building imaginary Maginot lines through the middle of the market square.

  4. Also this story does a LOT of damage to the Brady Creeps who seem to think the “Terrorist Watch List” is somehow a useful list.

If the list is such a great thing that it’s worthy of depriving the rights of every soul on that list, why the FUCK was this card-carrying Terrorist allowed the PRIVLEGE to fly on a plane….you know, the whole reason why this stupid list was MADE???

    TSA has jumped the shark!

  5. I always thought kilts would make a comeback.

Actually, if you extrapolate this, airports and aircraft might eventually become places of enforced nudity.

  6. Why are you blaming TSA? This raghead was screened in Amsterdam by a private security company working under contract with the airline. The TSA had nothing to do with it.
